Work Text:
Vanessa walks through the halls of the high smiling and waving at everyone as she passes. As she walks in the classroom everyone looks at her. She doesn’t say anything as she sits at a desk near the middle of the room.
“You’re the new girl, right? Vanessa parker?” the sitting to the right of Vanessa asks. “Yeah. Todays my first day.” Vanessa answers with a smile. “Well, I’m Caroline I’m the representer for the sirens.” Caroline introduces herself. Vanessa nods. “So, you’re a siren. That’s cool.” She says striking conversation. Caroline nods.
“Yep. There aren’t many of us here. Just a select few who like to be in human form for 8 or more hours.” “Must suck. I couldn’t imagine being in one form for that long.” “our group struggle through it for the most part. The principle gave us our own soundproof swim room so we could have a little relief though.” The bell rings silencing the conversation. The teacher strides in with a smirk.
“Alright class we have a new student today. Vanessa Parker if you could stand, please.” He encourages. Vanessa sighs and stands up. “Now would you like to share anything about yourself or have any questions?” the teacher asks.
“I just got accepted here a week ago and I think I’m going to like it here.” She says to everyone with a smile. She sits down quickly. “Does anyone have any questions for miss parker?” The teacher asks.
“Yeah! What are you?” A centaur in the back of the class asks. “A student at this fine school.” She answers with a smug smile. “No, he meant what creature are you?” Caroline says clearing the confusion.
“I knew what he meant, and I won’t answer that right now. What’s important is that I’m here to learn.” Vanessa tells the blond with a polite smile. She looks to the teacher and the board patiently. The teacher turns around and starts his lecture.
By lunch time Vanessa has people bombarding her to join their creature clubs and groups or to join their table instead of another’s.
“No thank you. I would like to be alone.” Is all she says as she walks outside of the school building. She sits down the ground under a tree and hums a little tune. “You know you could’ve been nicer to those kids red.” A voice says from behind her. She rolls her eyes.
“Nicer? Really, I’ve been killing them with kindness.” She tells them. “What are you doing here anyway? Aren’t you supposed to be working right now?” “I got bored had to come check on my baby.” “Oh, how sweet love but really I’m fine here and you know it.” “I know babe.”
“Oh, and I don’t think the kindness is working. Try using your powers instead.” They say laughing before snapping away. Vanessa sighs. “That would give me away love.”
