Work Text:

Perhaps he had misheard…

Certainly there was no way they had meant to direct those words toward him.

It simply had to be a mistake.

But the room was empty and void of noise save for what his visitor had just said to him in parting before the door closed behind them. The sound echoed and Aymeric found himself alone again in his office with the words hanging in the air.

“I love you.”

They had been uttered with such ease. It felt so natural to hear. The Lord Commander struggled desperately to recall every moment before they had parted.

He reached idly for a strand of his hair to twirl in thought trying to process the series of events.

It had been a rare but welcomed late night visit. A moment of reprieve for them both. A smile and an exchange of pleasantries and small talk that he so craved while sequestered in his office for bells. Time was precious and fleeting between them and so Aymeric did quietly treasure moments like these. Before long it was time for them to part just as quickly as it seemed they had arrived.

What sudden feelings had possessed them into this sudden confession. The elezen simply could not seem to fathom it but he felt a flutter within his chest and a heat growing from his ears to his cheeks.

By the time he had gathered his thoughts and rushed to the door they were nowhere to be found. His heart fell yet also a small sense of relief washed over him. For if they had been there waiting outside that door for his answer he was not certain he could answer. No, they deserved the same ease, the same strength and confidence they had offered.

With a heavy sigh, he retreated back into his office to contemplate.

However could he hope to concentrate on work now? He felt the heavy weight upon him to provide a proper response to them.

“I love you..?” he breathed as he leaned back in his chair and gazed up at the ceiling. Three deceptively simple words yet so incredibly powerful.

Halone help him, this was going to be a long night.
