Dear Megumi

Summary:

While Megumi was cleaning out Itadoris things after his execution he finds a letter addressed to him that suspiciously looks like a love letter.

What does he do?

Read it of course, he wouldn't have if he knew what was in that letter. He never would have even gone through his things if he had known he would find that letter.

Notes:

Hi I usually don’t write on ao3 but here I am.

I have never read the JJK manga but I plan on it so if anything isn’t accurate that is probably why and I’m sorry if I messed up anything completely

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It finally happened, Itadori’s execution. Everyone knew that he was going to get executed, it wasn’t a surprise. They all knew he was going to die in the end of this but they just held onto hope that something would change, that maybe by some gods mercy the elders would change their minds let him live. It was a foolish thought. He would die. They realized that soon before his death. They didn’t want to believe it but it was true.

He had a smile on his face the whole time. It didn’t drop it for even second. He knew it would be tough on everyone, he didn’t want to make it worse. He knew he would die. He was ready for it. Sure, he hoped that maybe something would change but deep down he knew nothing would change. He was a threat to everyone, even if he had control right now there was no saying that he would always have control.

He waved them goodbye that day, his signature smile glistening on his face. He looked normal, it didn’t feel normal though. The air was tense and yet full of sadness. Things would never be the same without him. Itadori was the embodiment of sunshine to them. He was nice, sweet, caring yet he wouldn’t wait even second to fight someone in the name of another.

Even if it had nothing to do with him, if it was causing a friend of his hurt he go to the world and back for that friend. Yes he had a curse inside of him but that didn’t stop him from being an amazing person till the end.

They watched him get executed but nobody could make a move to stop it. They were all in shock. This was their friend, classmate, and even student. They would never forget nor would the world forget him. He was an amazing boy till the very end of his existence.

After the execution they went to their dorms to morn for their losses. They didn’t care if the world was in danger they would still sit there and think about him.
————————————

Days later it was time to clear his room. No one wanted to but Megumi felt it was right for him to do it. He volunteered and when others wanted to help he would refuse. He was by far the closest to Itadori. He had talked to him before he had even knew what a curse was.

He blamed himself for introducing him to the world of curses. Everyone knew he did. It was obvious in his eyes. His normal oxny eyes were filled with pure regrets and self hatred. Everyone knew he would blame himself for eternity. That’s why the offered to help him. They knew he was taking this the hardest and wanted to help but he turned them down. He knew that they knew he felt what he felt. He didn’t want to give them more pain. He would leave himself to wallow in self hatred. This was his burden nobody else’s.
————————————

There he was in his room packing everything into boxes. He was close to being half way done. All the figures had been packed into their own boxes, all the shows had been packed into their own boxes, and all the Selena Gomez posters and movies packed into their own boxes. All that was left was clothing, hangers, a desk, a bed, a t.v, books, and a letter.

‘Wait a letter’ Megumi suddenly thought to himself.

He had been thinking about all that was left for him to do when he realized that there was in fact a letter on his bed. He hadn’t looked at who it was for seeing as this wasn’t his stuff. Now though he was getting curious as to who Itadori would leave a letter to on his bed. He decided it to give a quick look at who it was addressed to.

He took the letter off the bed to look at the name when he realized it said his own name. Dear Megumi was read in thick black ink. On the back of the letter it read Read this after my execution yet again in thick black ink. He was shocked, why would Itadori write a letter to him out of anyone in this school and only him.

His heart fluttered slightly at the thought of him be special to Itadori but he quickly shoved that feeling down.

‘No this isn’t something special for me, he probably wrote one for everyone and someone put it on his bed for me to find. That’s all, nothing special.’ He said to himself in his head.

He knew that his feelings didn’t need to blind him right now. Itadori is dead now, nothing can and will ever happen between them. He needed to get over his feelings, there was nothing ever romantic about their relationship. It was a completely platonic relationship with no other feelings on Itadori’s side.

He didn’t want to read the letter but at the same time he wanted nothing more than to image Itadori’s voice saying what was written to him on that letter in his mind. Maybe he was far to much in love, maybe he was just desperate to think he heard Itadori’s voice again, that sweet angelic voice. He blushed and shakes his head quickly almost to try to shake his thought away.

He notices once he looks down at the letter again that it kinda looks like a love letter. It was red with small bits of pink and black splotches scattered around the edges of it. The top dip had a gold shine to it. The handwriting was neat, almost to neat for Itadori. While there was no doubt it was Itadori’s handwriting from how the M’s were written and the dots on the I’s, it was just very neat and different than his normal handwriting.

What Megumi didn’t understand was why it looked so much like a love letter if it was addressed to him of all people.

‘Wait is this a… No! It’s not a love a letter. He was straight, he was in love with Selena Gomez not me. I need to stop thinking about my feelings for him and get over them. He’s dead.’

‘Plus Itadori’s stupid, he probably didn’t realize it looked like a love letter and had Our Colors. Wait… our colors?’

He quickly looked back at the letter and noticed that it did in fact have their hair colors on it. He blushed and his heart gave a small flutter once again. He quickly forced that feeling down again.

‘Stop it! It’s just a coincidence nothing more. It probably doesn’t have anything to do with hair colors, it’s probably just to show it’s for me or something. There is nothing romantic about this.’

“He’s dead.” He told himself again, he had to remind himself that over and over again.

Sometime he would walk into Itadori’s room looking for him or wait at a mission spot for him, he knew he was dead and gone but he didn’t want to believe it. He wanted to believe that the sun in his world was still alive and happy. He knew what he felt towards Itadori but didn’t want to admit it.

Crushing on a straight boy was something he said he would never do in the past but here he was head over heels for Itadori. No matter how stupid he could be he was still beautiful in Megumi’s eyes. He was in love with him and Megumi knew it, he knew it the moment he layed eyes on him.

“Stop it! This isn’t the time to think about the past and things that will never happen!” He said to himself again, he knew what he said but just couldn’t help it. He shook his head violently and looked at the letter in front of him deciding to finally read it.

His palms were sweaty as he picked up the letter and began to open it. He tried to not tear even the smallest edge of the letter as he began to open it. He opened it without a tear as he hoped and took out the letter that was inside the envelope.

It was folded and he heisted unfolding it, he knew it was for him but he still felt wrong opening it. He knew it said to open after his execution but he couldn’t help but feel bad that Itadori wasn’t here to watch him read it or just straight up say whatever he had written down. He took a deep breath and began to unfold it.

It read ‘Hey Megumi it’s me. I know this is going to be tough for you to read and I know this is going to be a tough time for you but I need to tell you this. I wish I could tell you what I want to say but at the same time I don’t know if I could look you in the face if I told you this. -’

‘What could Itadori be so ashamed to talk to me about that he feels he could no longer look me in the face again?’

‘-I’m sorry for not getting to the point. I know this will probably be the worst thing for you to read and I know you might hate me for this, but that’s fine. I’ll be dead when your reading this and even if you hate me from the grave it’s better than ruining this friendship.-”

‘What could be so bad that he thinks I could hate
him for something, I could never hate him, I’m to in love with him to much to ever hate anything about him.’

“-Okay okay I should just get to the point already. Megumi… I love you.-”

Megumi stopped and stared at the words in front of him.

‘No… No I had to have read it wrong there’s no way he would ever like someone like me. He’s straight. It’s just my heart messing with my head again.’

No matter how many times he looked over the words they were always the same. His heart wanted to believe the words that were written but his head just couldn’t believe the words. He didn’t believe himself to be of any value to Itadori. He just didn’t want to believe it.

He wanted to put the letter away but his heart just couldn’t leave now, he was to far in. His heart took over his head and he continued to read the letter.

“I honestly am just completely in love with you. I have been for awhile, I knew I was but I didn’t want you to know. I’m sorry if this is disgusting to you and I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable with this but I just needed you to know. I know you might hate me and I’m fine with that. I’ll still love you even if you hate me. Well I guess that’s all I wanted to tell you.
I love you, sincerely your beloved Itadori.”

Megumi clung to the letter tightly. He didn’t know what to say or do, his eyes were flowing tears without him noticing. The man he had loved for so long was in love with him and right when he was told the man was dead. What was this, a sick joke? Why did the heavens above have to do this to him.

He sat there squeezing onto the letter and crying in a ball for hours. Eventually when it was close to midnight Gojo walked in to tell Megumi to leave what was left for the next day when he saw him passed out on the floor with dry tears covering his face.

He picked him up to lay him down on his own bed instead of the floor when he noticed he was grasping onto a paper. He carefully took the paper out of his hands and skimmed over it. He froze when he saw the words ‘I love You.’

It reminded him of himself and Geto when they were younger, the I love you’s being passed around between the two of them. They always acted like it was completely platonic but deep down they both knew that it wasn’t and it was completely romantic. He sighed, those were the good old days, the days before Geto went bad. He missed those days.

He started moving again and went into Megumi’s room. He sat him down gently and put the paper back in his hands. He knew that they liked each other, it was obvious to everyone but those two. He just never knew that Megumi would have to find out now of all times.

“Goodnight Megumi, I love you” Gojo said softly, leaving the room and gently shutting the door. He stood there against the door staring away from it. He never thought he would ever utter those words again after Geto. He laughed silently, the Heavens above really did have a sick sense of humor.

The End

Notes:

This was my first time ever writing a romance with a sad ending not even a slightly happy ending, usually romance is a side things in what I write but this was so amazing to write so I’ll probably write something like this again.

Hope you all have a great day :D !!!
