Hello, hello. I'm not where I'm supposed to be.
Dan honestly doesn’t know why he’s at this party. He knows it’s only going to end horribly for him, because there’s alcohol everywhere that he can’t avoid, and all the big kids are drinking.
Sure, a drink or two wouldn’t hurt, but he’s terrified of being sucked into that dark hole again.
“Dan, mate! Buddy, good to see you!” Chris shouts drunkenly as he throws his arms around Dan, sloppily kissing him on the cheek. “Haven’t seen you in ages, mate.”
Dan chuckles. “Chris, you just saw me two days ago. We went to see that stupid movie, remember?”
“I’m drunk. I can’t remember if I ate breakfast this morning,” Chris says. “You wanna drink?”
Dan sighs as he stares at Chris. “You know, maybe one drink wouldn’t hurt.”
“Exactly. One drink won’t hurt. Have some fun!” Chris exclaims, spinning around, and Dan bursts into laughter when he nearly trips over on his own feet, but catches himself.
“Alright, you’re out of control. I’m going to go get myself a drink” Dan says, shaking his head. He turns on his heels, and he finally makes his way towards the kitchen. He glances around. There aren’t many people in the kitchen at the moment. Mostly everybody is outside in the pool.
Dan walks over to the fridge and pulls a beer out of the fridge. He walks over to the counter and grabs a red solo cup, pouring the beer into the cup. One drink won’t hurt.
“Is that a good idea?”
Dan startles at the sudden voice. He looks over and frowns when he sees a dark-haired boy standing there, someone who looks familiar but he can’t quite remember their name. “Uhm-?”
“Chris is an idiot. You shouldn’t listen to him, especially when he’s drunk,” the man says.
“I’m sorry. Do I know you?” Dan asks, blinking a few times.
He chuckles. “Come on, Dan. I know it’s been a couple of years, but it couldn’t have been that long…”
Dan blinks as he tries to remember, and then his eyes widen as soon as he realizes.
Hello, hello. Last time that I saw your face. Was recess in second grade.
“Phil!”
Phil laughs, seeming relieved. “There we go!” He walks over to Dan, pulling him in for a hug. “God, it’s good to see you again, Dan. I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to see you again. It’s been… how long?”
“Second grade,” Dan replies instantly. He looks up at Phil. “Recess, to be exact.”
“Wow,” Phil says. “How can you remember something like that? It was so long ago?”
“I guess you must have made a really good impression on me,” Dan mumbles, shrugging his shoulders. “Sorry I didn’t keep in touch like we said we would. I… uhm, I’ve been dealing with some things.”
Phil shakes his head. “I’m friends with PJ. He told me a few things here and there,” he says.
Dan frowns. “What exactly has he told you about me?”
“Nothing really, so don’t get upset with him for saying anything. He just mentioned that you were struggling with some stuff a few years ago. He mentioned your name once so I asked about you. I didn’t want to bother you when you were going through all that,” Phil tells him.
Dan sighs as he stares at Phil. “Well, I appreciate it, but I could have used a friend back then too.”
“What about now?” Phil asks. “I know it’s been a long time, but I promise I haven’t changed much.”
Dan chuckles. “Yeah, I could always use a friend, Phil.”
“I know. Which is exactly why I came over here to stop you from doing something stupid like drinking this,” Phil says, reaching over and gently tapping on Dan’s cup. “You’re sober, yes? You should keep it that way.”
“I honestly don’t even know why I came to this stupid party in the first place,” Dan admits.
“So, why don’t we get out of here then?” Phil suggests. “We can go back to my place for a bit.”
Dan raises his eyebrows as he looks up at Phil again. “Is this you subtly trying to get me into your bed? Because I’m honestly really not feeling up to it.”
“No!” Phil’s eyes widen, and he shakes his head. “No, God Dan. I just meant we can hang out. Jesus.”
“Oh,” Dan breathes, before slowly nodding. “Yeah. That’d be nice. Can we leave now?”
“Absolutely,” Phil says, and grabs Dan’s hand, leading the way out of the kitchen without another word.
It doesn’t take very long to get to Phil’s place, luckily. It’s a small apartment, but cozy. Dan feels safe, and he feels safe with Phil, even though it’s been years since they’ve been together.
“What were you doing at that party?” Dan asks when they’re in Phil’s kitchen, Phil making them tea.
Phil chuckles. “To be honest, I don’t really know. PJ told me about it, and I thought I’d go,” he explains. “And, I’m glad I did. As soon as I saw you, I knew I had to say something.”
“I’m glad you did,” Dan says, biting his lip as he stares at Phil.
Phil looks over at Dan, smiling shyly. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Dan nods, and he steps closer to Phil. “I know I said early that I wasn’t in the mood for sex, but… fuck, can I kiss you? I just want to kiss you.”
“Yes,” Phil replies instantly, and gasps when Dan’s lips are on his a second later. Phil melts into the kiss, and grabs a hold of Dan, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss.
Dan moans, before pulling away from the kiss, his eyes wide. “Wow. I-”
Phil can’t help but laugh, and pecks Dan once more. “Yeah, wow. That’s one way to put it.”
“You know, now I’m kind of glad I went to that party,” Dan says, his cheeks turning a light pink.
Phil grins. “Yeah?” He asks, and smiles when Dan shyly nods his head yes. “I’m glad we both went.”
