imagine going into a high school that is full of foolish humans. well, mina doesn’t have to imagine.
all her life, the school that she went to was filled with people her kind. the ones with long pointy teeth that can suck the life of these mortals. however, since her mother wanted her to, and quote, “feel what it’s like to be a human”, she’s here today to experience that.
although her mother is human, she still loved her the same as she did with her father. marrying someone that is human brought many disgusting stares and gossips between the vampires. well if you hear someone marrying a kind that isn’t your own, the news will surely spread like wildfire.
however, her father seemed to not mind those people as he’s still happily living with her mother. also from the looks of it, her mother isn’t a tiny bit afraid of her father. maybe they were meant to be, but people are too blind to see that.
“mina! get out of bed or you’ll be late for school!” her mother called out. groaning, while still getting up in the process, she stumbled into her bathroom to wash up.
as soon as she’s finished, she wore the first thing in her closet and dragged her feet downstairs, where her parents were happily chatting about something mina can’t distinguish.
“honey! you’re up!” her mother cheered, pulling away from her father’s embrace. “i packed your lunch already and don’t worry, i transferred the pack into a bottle so people won’t notice.” she continued, while smiling warmly.
mina smiled, “thank you mom.”
“oh and also, my friend’s daughter is coming here to pick you up. you don’t have to worry about riding the bus with people.” mina sighed out a relief. in all honesty, mina thinks she isn’t ready to face humans. well she faced a couple a few times before but not to this extent.
her school has hundreds of humans walking around her, she’s only use to being around less than ten of them. how can she control herself? what if she suddenly attacks someone for their blood unknowingly? her parents seem to pick up mina’s worries as her father said, “look, i know it’ll be hard to control at first but remember you aren’t like the other vampires. you’re different. if it does become too much for you to handle then drink the blood your mom packed you right away.”
mina seemed to have calmed down at what her father said. he’s right. she’s different compared to the other vampires. ever since she was born, all she’s been drinking was animal blood. not once in her life has she drank human blood before. though she’s worried that she might once she enters this school.
still, she brushed off her anxiety and listened to her father’s words. just drink the blood that’s packed in her bag when she feels like she’s losing control, she reminds herself. she’ll be fine.
a knock was then heard through the door and her mother came to open it.
“sana!” her mother exclaimed.
“good morning. is she ready? if she isn’t then i can wait-“
“oh no need, she’s right here actually.”
suddenly, a pair of honey brown eyes came into contact with her dark ones. mina must admit that she was beautiful. there’s no need in denying that. however, what caught her attention the most was her scent. she didn’t smell like, human.
confused, mina frowned, causing her eyebrows to come together and her forehead to wrinkle as she kept breathing in her scent.
sana giggled at this, “i’m a half vampire too.” mina’s mouth formed an ‘o’ shaped. that makes sense, she said to herself.
“you see honey, her mom is my best friend in high school and we bumped into each other a few days ago. her husband suddenly came into view and the scent was so familiar to me that i recognized it immediately.” her mother continued, “i then found out about sana going into the high school you were going to so i thought you could use a friend that was similar to you.”
she didn’t know why her mother needed to explain herself, but she knew that she’d be pondering over this later, so she’s grateful that her mother did end up explaining what happened.
mina nodded awkwardly at that though, didn’t know what to say afterwards. suddenly an unpleasant silence creeped in, but was cut off a second it came into view.
“you girls should get going, don’t want to be late to school now do we?” her father said.
right, school. she sighs and picks up her belongings. “i’ll see you guys later.” mina says as she kisses her parents on the cheeks.
“enjoy your day honey!”

“it’s mina right?” the girl from earlier asked as they stepped out from her house.
mina nodded.
“first time in a human school?”
mina nodded again.
“i’m assuming you’re not that close with any humans to consider them your friends, right?”
mina nodded for the third time.
this made sana laugh, “not the talking type i see.”
at this, mina’s face flushed red due to embarrassment. “sorry, i’m just socially awkward, i guess?” mina cringed at herself. she’s better off not talking at all, she thought.
“well i’m sure you wouldn’t be later on. not when you’re going to be stuck with me for the rest of high school.” the girl exclaims.
mina isn’t sure if she should be excited or worried, but for some reason she’s actually excited for what’s to come. she isn’t the type to befriend someone easily but when it came to sana, it seemed like they were already friends. mina just felt so comfortable around her for some reason. maybe sana might be her first friend that she’ll keep in a lifetime.
with that thought in mind, they both entered sana’s car to drive to school. she hopes that this school year wouldn’t be as bad as her previous ones.
