Bangs were heard at the metal door. Usually when people got close to discovering them, they were in hurry, hiding everything. But right now, it was pointless. Everybody just stood, waiting for their fate.
"Hands up!" The police commanded through a speaker. Not even a second later they busted through the door.
The man that entered the room first said words that sent cold shivers over Heeseung's spine. "We want one. We'll leave you alone, as long as you stop this homosexual bullshit."
"Fine." Sunghoon stepped forward, head up proudly. "Take me."
Jungwon tried to pull the boy back. "Don't. They'll kill you. Right here." He whispered.
Sunghoon shook of his hand off. "I know."
The man that had spoken roughly took Sunghoon. "He has spoken. He is now property of the government."
He loaded his gun and pointed it to the head of the boy he was holding.
Heeseung's body had been frozen until that very moment. But seeing a gun against Sunghoon's head made the moment suddenly so real.
"Wait!"
Sunghoon turned to him. "What are you doing?," He hissed. "Get back."
"No," Heeseung answered. "I can't just let you die! You're being stupid."
"Choices are already made, Seung. The beginning of this club was yours, the end of it, is apparently mine."
"Coward."
"Excuse me?"
"I. Said. Coward." Heeseung repeated, voice filled with emotion.
"I'm trying to save you! Can't you see?"
"After all we've been through, you're just gonna die? Just like that?" Heeseung's voice trembled, but he didn't care. He wouldn't let Sunghoon die.
"If it was either you guys, or me, to die, I'd always choose me."
"That's because you won't have to deal with everything after! Think about it, Sunghoon. Me, grieving. Jungwon, grieving. Sunoo grieving. Jay, grieving. Jake, grieving. Riki, grieving. All of us, the sight of you dying haunting our nightmares."
"You can't change my mind."
"Just stop! Stop being a such hero!"
"Sometimes, life is unfair. I'm not trying to be hero, but my death won't be important. I mean, look at me. I'll never be the guy you like."
"W-what?"
"I like you, Heeseung. Love you even. But you never saw me as anything more than a friend." Sunghoon's eyes were cold, like the life in them had already left.
"It was always you," He continued. "You, who started a rebellious gay club. You, whom's brightness just... blinds others. Next to you, I am nothing. But that won't stop me loving you. Let this moment be for me."
Heeseung's eyes were filled with tears. This couldn't be true. No, no, no.... No!
"I know I'm selfish. Confessing my love right when I'm about to die. I deserve that bullet through my head."
"Sunghoon..."
"I know, I don't want to argue either."
"Sunghoon, I... I love you."
"Don't pity me. I've already come to terms with the fact you'll be nothing more than a friend."
"No! I–," He breathed out, tears falling on his chest as he did. "I love you. I guess I just never knew how to say it."
Sunghoon smiled. Really smiled. Like, his eyes radiated love. He then turned around and asked the police officer something. The latter huffed and replied; "As long as you do it quick. And remember: no games, or all of you will be dead."
Sunghoon stepped forward, taking Heeseung's hands into his. And... leaned forward.
Their lips met in a kiss. Even at tragic moments like these, love did not hesitate. A warm feeling spread throughout the two figures, followed by a realization these were the last moments they'd spent together. Ever.
Sunghoon softly let go of the kiss, not looking into the eyes of the other. "Goodbye, everyone."
Heeseung looked over his shoulder. The members of his club. His only friends. All of them devastated. But they didn't know how it felt. To lose something you didn't know you had that long ago.
"Now, this has been going on for way to long." He put the gun to Sunghoon's head.
Heeseung couldn't stop his tears. Just like that? He realized his love for him, but the feeling of bliss will never be bigger than the feeling of grief. Regret, too. They could've been so much, but they had to be a tragic love story.
"Smile for me, darling." Sunghoon said softly, tender. And then the most awful thing echoed through the room. A gunshot. One fatal gunshot through his head.
And so, his body fell to the ground.
Heeseung knew he was screaming, crying and looked pathetic. He didn't care, though. He stormed to Sungho– No, Sunghoon's body.
A smile ghosted at the lips of the body. He looked so ethereal, unreal. All of this was so unreal. Sunghoon, the prettiest person known to mankind. Sunghoon, the talented ice skater. Sunghoon, the one that always scored good grades in Math. Sunghoon, the one that never failed to cheer him up. Sunghoon, the boy he was in love with. Sunghoon, who was dead.
Heeseung clutched his body to his chest. Tears mixed with blood. Everything was so overwhelming. Everything was so empty. Why? Why them? He buried his head in the neck of Sunghoon. The body was still warm... and smelled like Sunghoon. Like home. He breathed the smell in. Inhaled, exhaled. Repeated it, again and again.
When he finally looked up, he noticed the police had left. The club was surrounding Sunghoon's body, none of their eyes dry.
Well, Sunghoon's were. He was the least emotional of the group. He was also dead. Very, very dead. But that was something Heeseung wasn't ready for. He refused to be. For now, let them be in a state between a lie and a truth.
He lowered his teary eyes to look into those of Sunghoon. He reached out with his hand, closing the eyes of the other. It made it look like he was sleeping. Peacefully napping, dreaming about something nice. But the blood smeared across his face made it hard to believe.
After all, the truth isn't made to be hidden. The truth, how harsh it is, is made to be true. If you lie to someone, to save their emotions, their emotions will be true felt emotions, but not the emotions about the truth. And that's why people lie, want it to be a lie. But does it help? Only for a short period. But it will never last.
That's what Heeseung realized in that exact moment. Life was only a short period of time. But it will never last. It will never win against death.
