Blood in the Water

Summary:

It's a simple mission, really. Caitlyn, Vi and Ekko have gone to Bilgewater to retrieve some stolen Hextech. No biggy, right? Well, that is until Vi gets into a bar fight and ends up in Captain Fortune's brick. But it's all - how do pirates say? - smooth sailing from here... Right?

Notes:

This is for this month's r/Fanfiction prompt challenge. I opted - as always - for the random option and got offered the trope Walk the Plank. While originally unsure what to do with it, I recently fell deep (deep) into the well of LoL Lore, so I thought: I send Vi, Caitlyn and Ekko over to Bilgewater.

Now, this is set in the Arcane timeline (that is "Arcane timeline + my headcanon for post season 1"). So, some Bilgewater incidents might've happened a bit different than in the main lore.

And yes, I am well aware that Sarah Fortune does not speak like your typical pirate in the lore bits we have. But talking like a pirate is just to much fun! :3

Chapter 1: Walk the Plank

Chapter Text

“Any bright idea's, cupcake?” Vi asked, while looking to the waters below.

Caitlyn tensed against the rope binding them together. This was a problem. A big problem. “We wouldn't be in this situation if you did not punch the guy!”

“You would not be in this problem, if you've just left it all to me!”

The pirate captain scoffed. “Ye can squabble in yer graves, lasses.” The woman had long red hair held together by black band – and still it looked almost like a mane. She had a gun directed at them, while they were standing on the plank – the outskirts of the Endless Ocean beneath them.

There really was not way out of this, was there? Caitlyn's mind was racing, but really, she could not find any good solutions. They were on the plank on the ship, which again was on the ocean just outside the lawless city called Bilgewater. And somewhere in the waters underneath she could make up some giant shadow. Frankly, Caitlyn did not want to find out to what sort of creature that shadow belonged to.

She tried it with reason one more time. “Can we please talk about this?” she asked. “I am telling you, we are just here because of the…”

The captain interrupted her. “Ah-ah-ah. That's exactly wha' I would say.”

“But it's true. We are from Piltover. We are just here, because…”

The woman shot into the air, making both of them squirm. “Enough. Now either ye jump or I'll shoot ye.” The gun was directed at them.

Vi, too, was gazing onto the black abyss below. “Any bright ideas?” she tried once more.

“I am afraid not…”

Then one of the pirates kicked against the plank, making it quake under their feet and just one moment later they were falling towards the ocean…

Ekko had finally found them. Just in time, it seemed, as the two women were standing on a gangplank, a gun directed at them. Somewhere in the waters below there was a creature, a giant creature. Then someone kicked the plank and the two of them fell.

Ekko did not even have to think about it. He activated his clock, time flowing backwards until the two were once more standing on the edge of the plank. On his board he races towards them, cutting through the rope with a knife.

“Hey!” That was the pirate captain. Miss Fortune – or Captain Fortune – she was called. Already she directed her gun at him and her crew followed suit.

Thankfully he was not bound by gravity, with his hoverboard carrying him over the waves and away from the shots. Knowing fully well this did not fully save the situation, he was working on another bright plan.

They had arrived in Bilgewater four days ago – and it had taken Vi exactly half a day to get captured after starting a bar fight. He and Caitlyn had tried to free her, but this had only led to Caitlyn being captured as well. As much as he loved Vi and was happy to have her back, he had to agree with the sheriff. She would get in less trouble if she did not introduce herself by punching people.

As he gained on altitude, the two women managed to get onto the deck of the ship. At least they worked together rather well. Vi took out one of the pirates, getting a gun for Caitlyn. Before the pirates even noticed, what was going on, said gun was directed at the captain.

While Ekko could not hear what was said, the situation seemed to be turning.

With a sigh he let the board hover lower, to offer assistance if needed.

" Wha' the fuck do ye wants?" the captain sneered.

“Mostly,” Caitlyn replied – not without shooting Vi a long look, “we wanted to have you listen to us. My name is Caitlyn Kiranman and we are from the city of Bilgewater. As we said.”

“Ja, sure.” Captain Fortune had raised her hands, but it was clear that just as Vi and Caitlyn a moment before she was just waiting for a way out.

“It is true,” Vi said. “We are here because something was stolen from Piltover and we are here to retrieve it.”

“I hate t' break it t' ye, Sugar, but we be pirates. Stealin' be kinda wha' we do.”

“Just listen, okay?” Caitlyn's gaze was now directed towards the crew of about twenty folks who clearly were just waiting for a chance to attack. “The thing that was stolen was a magic weapon with the potential for great destruction."

“Uh.” The captain smirked. “That sounds promisin'.”

It seemed that her crew did not agree with this, however. As they exchanged nervous glances. Some mumbling words were exchanged between them.

As the only one who had not been captured, Ekko had had the change to hear around. What he had found was, that the “political” (as much as one could speak about “politics” when it came to pirates) situation in Bilgewater was currently instable. There had been a pirate ruling the city with an iron fist. Gangplank as he had been fittingly called. This pretty redhead, Captain Fortune, had gotten rid of him about a month ago. Now the pirates and other fugitives of the law that called Bilgewater their home were all riled up, trying to capture as much of the city as possible.

Not the best situation to drop a Hextech weapon into.

“Look,” he said, as he hovered about ten feet over the deck, “you gotta see: If it ain't you who got the weapon, it's probably someone else. You really wanna bet on gettings ya hands on it, before it's used against ya?”

The captain looked at him for a long while. She was still trying to find a way out of this situation, was still trying to come up with a plan. But in the end her shoulders dropped, as she sighed. “'n wha's yer goal?”

“We just want the weapon,” Caitlyn replied. “Return it to Piltover, before it causes anyone harm.”

Captain Fortune gave an annoyed groan, but in the end she shrugged. “Fine,” she muttered. “Fine.”

And yet, Ekko was fairly certain she would do anything possible to get the weapon into her own two hands.
