Chapter Text
“So when am I gonna get to hangout with Jamie again? I kinda miss the little guy. ” Beca asked over the phone one night during one of their weekly calls during the week.
It was the week after their date and both Beca and Chloe were just itching to get together again. Unfortunately, Chloe had a bunch of surgeries planned for the week and Beca was busy at the label helping out with producing a new track for one of their top clients. She had recently been given the opportunity to sit in on the recordings, rather than just coming in and leaving the food and coffee, so she was definitely going to take advantage of the time she got to spend in there.
They both wanted to make time for each other for a lunch date during the week, but their schedules just weren’t allowing it. They wouldn’t be able to join each other for their weekly Friday lunch date because Chloe had a surgery scheduled for one of her patients during that period, it was the only time to fit it in during the already packed week.
“I mean, you’re welcome to come over any time, Becs. I know you guys haven’t really spent a lot of time together, but I’m sure he would love to have another friend besides me and Aubrey.” Chloe laughed. “Please tell Jesse thanks by the way. I think Jamie really enjoyed having another boy to rough house with for a while.” she said sincerely.
“Should I be jealous that my girlfriend’s son has spent more time with my best friend than me?” Beca off handedly tried to joke. Then she froze when she heard Chloe’s voice hitch on the other end of the line.
“So I’m your girlfriend, huh?” Chloe asked slyly.
“I’m sorry…Chlo…I didn’t mean… I mean I do mean… damn it!” Beca scolded herself as she tried to recover. “Chloe, I mean, I would really love it if you would be my girlfriend. Of course I would’ve really liked to ask you this in person but this just kind of slipped out so…Chloe Beale, will you be my girlfriend?” she rambled.
Chloe just giggled on the line, she thought Beca was so cute when she was nervous and rambled like that.
“Of course, Beca Mitchell. I would love it if I were your girlfriend. One condition though, you have to agree to be mine as well.” Chloe responded and tried to make a joke.
“Well, I’ll have to ask my other girlfriend, but I think she’d be ok with it. Only if it were with you.” Beca replied. Chloe feigned shock, “*gasp* Beca Mitchell, how dare you! She must be some woman if she’s willing to let you go for lil ol’ me.” she said in her best Southern accent.
“Oh trust me. She’s incredible.” Beca replied softly and sincerely.
“Hmmm” Chloe hummed in content. “Tell me more about her.” she baited.
“Well, she’s got these incredibly blue eyes, like the color could beat the bluest ocean you can think of, and they just light up when she talks about things she loves. Her hair is the most beautiful color red I’ve ever seen on a person. Not many people can rock the redhead look, but she definitely can. I can spot her anywhere with how vibrant it is. It’s quickly become one of my favorite shades. And her smile, oh my gosh! Her smile is one of the best things I love about her, it can literally light up a whole room. Every time I see it, my day gets instantly better, it doesn't matter if it’s in person, on FaceTime, heard through the phone, or hell, even just a picture; it’s guaranteed to make me feel 10x better than before I saw her smile. I swear, sometimes I can even just feel when she’s smiling because it’s just that effective. Kinda like how I can feel it right now…” Beca detailed with a huge grn on her face.
Chloe naturally swooned at all the things Beca was saying about her and she did, in fact, have a huge smile on her face just listening to Beca.
“...And she has this adorable little boy, I swear he’s just a carbon copy of her. Same bright blue eyes, flaming red hair, and the brightest smile you’ve ever seen on a kid. He’s a little rambunctious, but loves his mama very much. And he’s obsessed with anything Toy Story or Marvel related, he’s even got onesies of all the Avengers that he looks so cute in, I can’t help but melt every time I see a picture of him.” Beca continues, “but…I would really like to see him again…Maybe this weekend? At the fair that’s coming into town?” she tries to nonchalantly ask Chloe out again, this time with Jamie.
Chloe still has to recover from her heart melting at the lovely words that Beca just spoke describing herself and her son. “My my Beca Mitchell, you definitely know how to charm a girl,” she fanned herself and heard Beca giggle a bit on the phone, “but this weekend sounds great. I’ll have to check it with his mother, but I’m sure he would love to go.” Chloe replied.
“Oh, and of course, you’re invited to Chlo!” Beca added as a joke, chuckling to herself.
“Oof, is it too late to take back my ‘charmer’ comment from earlier? I take it back, you’re an ass.” Chloe humph, but there was no heat to her words.
Beca just laughed. “I’m kidding babe. I’d love it if you came. I want to spend more time with you and him. You guys are important to me.” She knew it was too early to call it ‘love’ so she’ll stick with this for now.
Chloe just listened and stared dreamily at the blanket on her lap. How did she get so lucky to meet someone so sweet and caring. Beca has barely spent time with Jamie but she can already see that she cares so much about him without even really knowing him. She felt so loved by this woman she met only a month ago.
“How are you real? Why are you so good to me? To us? You’ve barely spent time with Jamie, but I can already tell how much you love him. Thank you, Beca.” Chloe said sincerely.
“You guys deserve it. I wanna give you guys all the best things you deserve.” Beca replied. She let out a quiet yawn and stretched out on her bed, laying down fully and getting more comfortable. Chloe heard the yawn and checked the time.
“We should go to bed, Becs. We’ve been talking for hours and it’s nearly midnight.” Chloe suggested.
“Mmmm, you’re right. I know you’ve got a busy day tomorrow.” Beca agreed. “Text me when you wake up?” she asked Chloe.
Chloe just hummed in agreement. “Will do. Good night, Becs.”
“Sweet dreams, Chlo.” They hung up and finally went to bed.
The weekend finally came and Beca was getting ready to pick up the Beales to head to the fair. Beca called Jesse for a quick pep talk, she was a bit nervous for a) being on another date with Chloe, their second “official” date and b) spending time with Jamie. Sure, they hit it off at the beach during the July 4th party, but Beca convinced herself that it was only because he had some cool “toys” she was playing with and he wasn’t actually interested in her.
“Jess, I’m freaking out! What if he doesn’t like me? What if it’s a deal breaker for Chloe? Oh God! We just made it official this week and now it’s gonna end even before we can go on a date as official girlfriends.” she was pacing her living room, almost out of breath as she spoke all at once.
“Woah, calm down dude! You’ve got nothing to freak out about. You’ve been seeing Chloe for what, a month now? You’ll be fine. And Jamie? Don’t sweat it! He warmed up to me pretty well when we watched him last weekend, and I had never spent any time with him at all. He’s just like his mom, super sweet and friendly. If you can get along with his mom, you can get along with him.” Jesse consoled. “Plus he’s four, Becs. Don’t tell me you’re scared of a four year old.” he added smugly.
“I’m not scared, just nervous. I can’t believe my relationship with the most incredible woman I’ve ever met hinges on the impression I make on a four year old.” she replied rolled her eyes.
“Wow, I never thought I’d see the day. Big, bad Beca Mitchell, all around badass, scared straight by a four year old redhead.” Jesse laughs down the line.
“Oh screw you, Jess!” She yelled into her phone to get him to stop laughing. She didn’t mean anything by it and she knew Jesse knew that.
She caught a glimpse of the time on her phone, “Shit, I’m late. I’ve gotta go. Thanks for listening, Jess. Wish me luck!” she said as she walked out her door.
“It’s a fair Beca, there’s no being late/early, it’s there literally all day.” Jesse laughed to get her to lighten up. “You won’t need it, but good luck anyways. Have fun!” He said as they both hung up.
Beca drove up to Chloe’s house and spent a few minutes in the driveway psyching herself out. “You got this Becs. You’ve met him before and he loved you! You’ve got nothing to worry about.” she whispered to herself. Little did she know, Chloe spotted her from the front room window and was watching the whole thing.
Finally, after a few more minutes, Beca unbuckled herself and got out of the car. She walked right up to the door and was poised to knock, but stopped herself for one more quick pep talk. “You got this, nothing to worry about. Jamie liked you the first time and you weren’t even trying, so just be yourself.” She shook her arms out and took a couple more deep breaths before finally knocking on the door.
*Knock, knock*
Chloe quickly opened the door, “Beca! Nice to see you finally out of your car.” she giggled. “Come on in. We’re just about ready to leave.” she opened the door further so that Beca could follow her in.
“What do you mean ‘finally’ ? Wait, you saw me!” Beca asked with her eyes wide. Chloe just giggled and gave her a quick peck on her cheek. “Babe, the window in the front room gives a perfect view of the driveway. I’ve been watching you ever since you pulled up. That was about…” Chloe glances down at her wrist to check the time, “...10 minutes ago.” she laughed.
Beca’s cheeks were slowly starting to turn red. She looked down and kicked the floor in embarrassment. “Awww, babe. It’s ok, I think it’s kinda cute how nervous you are. To me, it shows just how important this is for you.” Chloe tried to comfort as she hooked her finger under Beca’s chin to give a more proper greeting of a kiss on the lips and a full hug.
“Yea, sorry it took so long. I’m just so nervous. I mean, I don’t know what to expect, but I just know I don’t want to mess things up.” Beca answered honestly.
“I know. And I think it’s really sweet that you are trying. But seriously, there’s nothing to be worried about. I don’t think Jamie’s met a person he doesn’t like.” Chloe offers as a way to comfort her. “I’m pretty sure he remembers you and that day at the beach because every time I bring out a bottle or can, he uses his markers to start beating on them. Just like you did that day.” she says with a smile.
Beca brightens up at this. Guess she really made an impression on the boy during their first time meeting. She’s feeling better about this date already. “Wow, that’s kinda neat.” she takes a deep breath. “Ok, I’m ready. Where is the little dude anyway?” she asks Chloe as they make their way further into the house.
They walk into the living room and on the other side of the couch is Jamie playing with his Ironman and Buzz Lightyear toys on the floor. He was so enamored by his make believe scene going on in his head that he barely registered that there were others in the room watching him from the edge of the room.
“Jamie, sweetie, can you come here for a sec?” Chloe asked her son to get his attention. Jamie brought both toys down from “flying” and looked over at his mother. He spotted a new person in the room that he didn’t really recognize and quickly went to hide behind his mother’s legs, Ironman toy clutched closely to his chest, eyeing Beca cautiously.
Chloe just crouches down to his level and smiles up at Beca before saying, “Jay, this is my friend Beca. Do you remember her when we went to the beach a while ago? She was the one with the bottle and the sticks…remember?” Recognition flashes in his eyes and he looks up to Beca with wide eyes and finally gives a small smile. Beca immediately returns the smile, or at least she hopes it’s a smile.
“Jamie, can you say hi to Beca?” Chloe tries to get the boy talking. A quiet “hi” comes from the boy and he immediately turns his attention to his toy in his hand, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
“Hi Jamie. It’s nice to see you again. Your mommy talks about you all the time.” Beca says as she crouches down next to Chloe and stretches out her hand. She questions why she went for a handshake with a four year old boy, but then he grabs her hand and shakes it back softly while giving her a small smile in return. Beca thinks it’s because he feels special that his mom has talked about him to other people.
She’s scrambling her brain on what to say next now that she got his attention. “Now, I came over because I heard someone wants to go to the fair. Who could that be?” Beca brings a finger to her chin to act like she’s thinking.
“Me! Me! Me!” Jamie yells and jumps up and down from his spot in front of her.
“Oh! It was you!” she returns his excitement. “Well then I guess we better get going.” Beca slowly gets up. “But I think we have to ask mommy first right?” Jamie turns to his mother to give her the cutest pout and puppy dog eyes Beca has ever seen. “Please mommy? We go to fair with Beca?” the little boy asks as he looks up at his mother.
“Ok, I guess we can go.” Chloe says. “Yay! Fair! Fair! Fair!” Jamie excitedly chants and jumps up and down around the living room.
“Hold on Jay. We’re not leaving with this mess still here. If you want to go, you have to clean up. When that’s done, then we can go.” Chloe says. Jamie tries his puppy dog eyes again but Chloe dismisses it. “Nope, either you clean up or we don’t go.” He hangs his head but then heads back to the room to put everything back in the toy chest.
“Come on Jay, the quicker you clean this up, the quicker we can leave to go to the fair.” she reminds him. “Beca, help.” he asks as he pulls her into the room as well to help with the clean up. She allows herself to be dragged by the little boy and looks back to Chloe who just has a big smile on her face.
With Beca helping clean up and Chloe helping Jamie get set to leave, the trio set off for the fair about 15 minutes later. Jamie seemed quite excited to be going to the fair and Beca didn’t seem as nervous anymore after their initial interaction back at the house.
They were all driving in Chloe’s car (since she had the car seat for Jamie) and Chloe was slowly trying to get Jamie to talk to Beca again. Of course, she knew that Jamie already liked Beca, but she wanted to keep them interacting with each other so that he would be more comfortable around her.
She looked at Jamie through her rearview mirror, he was busy playing with his Ironman toy. “Hey Jay, I think there’s a petting zoo at the fair this year. What animals do you want to see there?” Chloe baited.
Jamie’s ears pricked up at the mention of a petting zoo. Animals were his favorite and the petting zoo was always a must-do whenever there was an event with one available.
“Rabbits! And goats! And pigs! Oh and doggies! I like doggies.” he yelled. He was clearly excited to see what was going to be there.
“Hey, maybe we’ll see all of them there.” Beca jumped in trying to get in on the conversation. “My favorite are the mini horses. Do you like those too, Jamie?” she asked him to keep him engaged.
“Yea!” he replies. “Have you ever ridden one?” she turns around to ask him. He shakes his head. “Really? Well looks like we’ll have to fix that.” she chuckles. “If they have a place to ride them at the fair, do you want to do it?” Beca asks.
Jamie nods his head but then gets quiet and looks down at the toy in his lap. “But I’m scared.” he says quietly, but both Beca and Chloe hear it. “Hey, bud. There’s nothing to be scared of. Mommy can be right there with you if you want.” She tried to reassure the little boy.
Jamie picks his head up at this, looking a little more comfortable with the idea. “You too?” he asks directly, looking at Beca.
“Yea, sure. If you want me there, you got me.” she said and sent him a wink over her shoulder. Chloe just looked at Jamie in her rearview mirror and saw him looking back down to his toy in his lap but a big smile plastered on his face. Chloe couldn’t help her smile from growing as well. She was so happy that Beca and Jamie were getting along and couldn’t wait to get to the fair for more moments and opportunities for them to warm up to each other.
The day was already starting off so well, she was just hoping it stayed that way. But with Jamie being the wonderful kid that he is, she didn’t see it going any other way but up.
