Work Text:

The wind blew through the houses along the path, the soles of fall crept upon the horizon, and the season was changing on the day of the Cherrygrove Contest, which was slowly coming to an end as the sound of feet clattered away from the contest hall.

The results of this event weren’t much of a surprise, the rising winner was walking through the hall, slowly approaching the locker room door she stopped with a pause as her hand remained on the door handle.

A brown-haired, young woman with a red bandanna around her head slowly peered through the glass door as her sight caught someone oddly familiar.

She didn’t say a word, her grip on the handle tightened with a push, as she slowly opened the door before walking through, closing it behind her.

Now a young man sat on a bench, he had green hair with green eyes as he leaned against an opposing locker, his finger brushed against a piece of paper that he was staring down at.

A moment of silence passed by, and he felt an odd gaze as he turned his head, “What do you want?” He stated in an irritated tone.

The girl's eyebrows furrowed as she smiled so she wouldn’t snap, “You’re sorta in front of my locker.” She said, pointing at the said object, “Oh,” the boy slid away from the locker as she took the key out of her bag, inserting the key into the lock, clicking it open.

There was more pure silence, the air grew awkward as she put the Pokéballs back in her bag. “You know if you’re so gloomy over your loss, just say it already…” She remarked before closing her locker.

But a word was not said, she grew silent as the quietness rang sharply through her ears. She looked over, he wasn’t acting right as the sudden feeling of sorrow in the air caused May to grow confused. “What’s up with him?” She quietly said to herself.

Over to the other, he was still looking down at the paper, now with a confused look on his face as he continued to fidget with the paper in his palms. May walked up and sat down next to him, crossing her legs.

Drew looked up as an offended look crossed his face, as he pulled his shoulder away from hers as May only continued to stare at that paper.

With absolute silence it took a while for her to get a reaction, but then her eyes made contact with his. Still, with nothing to say she looked back at the paper as she gestured at what he had, he’d stare back at it once again.

The brown-haired girl slightly winced, she gently put out her hand. “Can I see that?” She asked, breaking the awkward silence, Drew hesitated a bit but went ahead and gave her it in a quick, quiet response.

She took the paper and positioned it upright on her palms, the green-haired boy continued to gaze at it with an unpleasant look.

Staring at the paper, she almost made a weird look at what was on it. It was a cheesy note that mentioned how cute Drew was and a few pictures of him that was full of pure glitter sloppily glued on the paper. She looked at her hand that had remaining glitter on sticking to her fingertip. “Let me guess, another fan made this for you?” She asked.

Giving a strange look at her, Drew received the letter back as he put it with all the other gifts he got that morning. “Yeah.. that’s what it is.”

“And.. You’re upset because?” She pondered as she lifted an eyebrow, the other only shrugged his shoulders.

May quickly looked away, and Drew looked in the same direction. “..At first I didn’t mind any gifts from my fans, but now it’s getting kinda old..” May’s head turned his way. “I see.” She said in a quick reply.

“Now I just, feel empty on the inside. I don’t know what it is, but I fear I may not appreciate my fans anymore.”

May had never seen this side of him before, he always was the one to catch her attention with his smarty pants remarks and nagging, but right now it was different.

She took a moment to think about it, but she started to speak again, “I don’t think *that’s* the cause.” She said with a smile, he looked at her with a confused look. “You know, I know how you feel.” She added.

“And what is that…?” Drew asked her, “Drew, have you ever considered who you are?” Instead of answering his question, she just asked him a completely different question.

He thought for a minute, “No... I don’t think so.” He said in response.

“Well, it’s like this…” she started to say as she finally looked him straight in the eyes. “You know, at first I didn’t know who and whom I was at the beginning of my journey, I would just follow the steps of everyone surrounding me without a single thought.” She started blabbering about herself, but when she looked up he seemed a little intrigued, so she continued.

“Whenever I was younger, almost every girl in my class had a crush in grade school. Yet, I was the only person of the girls to not have a single clue about ‘boy’ love.” Drew rolled his eyes at the thought, thinking it was silly.

“But as I grew up and finally became a Pokémon trainer, as soon as I got an interest in competing in contests I was barged with many compliments and questions from boys.” She said with a nervous smile and a chuckle, “And you know... I felt the same way you do now.” She finished off as she looked at the other's focused face, but May looked back down as she fidgeted her fingers.

“I never seemed so interested in boys ever in my life... And I owe a certain someone helping me realize who I am meant to be.” As she stopped talking, she looked up as the green-haired boy put some thought into it.

“So what you’re saying is…” He paused, but he hesitated before he could say anything. “But I can’t like boys.. right..?”

May rolled her eyes, “Drew, Drew, Drew…” she took in a deep breath, “Do you think you like women?” She said in a direct voice.

“Not especially…”

“Then there’s your answer, case closed!” She exclaimed.

“But are you sure, I couldn’t be—-“

“Oh come on,” The brown-haired girl scowled as she swiftly put her hands on his shoulders, startling him slightly. “You don’t like women, Drew!” She said straight in his face.

“Wha..?!” He slowly blinked, mouth open as he stared at her wide-eyed. “You’re not straight!” She said in an intense statement.

“Alright, alright get out of my face!” He pushed her away as she slightly tumbled back, shaking it off. “There’s that Drew I know..” She said with a smirk, Drew rolled his eyes.

“You’ll figure it out someday,” The brown-haired girl folded her arms, “I did so you can do so too. Remember that.” She said with a smirk.

Drew grew silent, she looked at him before turning her back around. “And Drew,”

“Hm?”

“Good luck with figuring yourself out, and that’s the truth. And don’t let it take a toll on yourself. You’ll figure it out, eventually.” She winked. Her head perked up as she looked at the door, a few people were walking in after the contest, “That’s my cue, I’ll see you at the next contest, see ya!”

“I’ll see you too, and next time, I will not back down!” He said as he stood up, as May started to exit the room, lifting her hand in a matter of understanding.

“And thanks for talking it out with me…” He quietly added.
