We’re the fire, we’re the glow

Summary:

Day 3 September 28th: “I’m gonna be late for work” + kissing/making out

Fic in which TK struggles to understand how honeymoons can’t last forever.

Notes:

Title from the song 'Wide Awake' by The Light the Heat

Please do debate the Strand-Reyes vs Reyes-Strand. I'm entirely on the fence so I flipped a coin for this fic. I expect they'll keep their names just so the writers don't have to make a choice.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tk wakes too warm, with a familiar light shining across his face, the glow of it way too bright for his partially open eyes. He groans turns to his stomach and blinks his eyes fully open when his outstretched arm comes up empty on the other side of the bed.

They’d only got into bed when the sun was already beginning its ascent after flight delays had caused them to spend nearly a whole day travelling and while TK had easily fallen asleep on their consecutive flights and in various airport lounges, Carlos had struggled with the stress of the whole situation and was wide awake the whole time. Last TK knew they’d both decided to spend the morning in bed until Carlos had to front up for his shift.

He can feel himself starting to nod off again when he spots Carlos coming into the room, pulling jeans up over his hips.

“Oh Hi,” TK mumbles, voice rough from sleep and Carlos jumps at his voice.

“I didn’t know you were awake,” he says and TK unapologetically watches him as he moves across the room to pull out a shirt.

“I am now” Carlos shakes his head, amused “but I thought we agreed to sleep until at least the afternoon”

“TK, it is the afternoon” TK makes a noise of displeasure and turns so he can push himself up and grab for his phone on the side table.

“Huh” TK murmurs at the sight of the 1:00 PM looking back at him before setting his phone back onto the table and rolling to his side, leaning on his elbow.

“I feel like I got cheated out of the end of my honeymoon,” TK sighs and Carlos glances across at him as he slips a long sleeve shirt over his head.

“I think, technically, you slept through the end of our honeymoon”

“We should extend it by a few days” Carlos rolls his eyes at him, grabs shoes and socks and walks over to the bed, sitting on the edge as he pulls them on.

“I think two weeks was enough” Carlos teases and TK gives him a light shove from behind and pouts at him when he turns to him, face alight with humour.

“You’re a terrible husband,” TK says and Carlos turns sideways, using one hand as support so he can lean over him.

“That’s not what you’ve said every night for the last two weeks,” Carlos says softly and TK fakes an upset face.

“I was lying” TK quips and Carlos leans down so he can smile into a soft kiss.

“Oh, I’m sure” he returns and TK smiles back, arm going around his new husband’s shoulders to force him to stay close. The kiss stays patient and soft and while TK can appreciate the heat and heady uncontrolled nature that always seems to take over, he can also appreciate the easy intimacy that he knows he won’t ever be without now. He sucks in a breath as Carlos breaks them apart, moving down to his neck and kissing the juncture between shoulder and neck, gently biting before soothing it over with his tongue.

“How are two weeks of you still not enough?” Carlos whispers, placing a kiss behind his ear and TK whimpers as he feels the words hit his skin. TK can’t imagine how he’s going to be able to avoid wanting to jump Carlos every single time he sees him.

“More honeymoon I say” TK breathes back, and Carlos lifts his head to finally meet his eyes again, raising his right hand to trail it across TK’s cheekbone. TK’s eyes fall shut at the gesture.

“I love you,” TK wonders when those three words ever get old. They’ve shared them for so long now that he assumes eventually they’ll feel like a habit – but for now, they still fill him with warmth.

“I love you too,” he replies and then snaps his eyes open when he feels the comforting warmth of Carlos disappear from on top of him.

“No, come back” TK cries, curling his leg around Carlos’s waist to keep him near.

“I need to get going,” Carlos tells him apologetically.

“Is this an example of how married life is going to be? You just riling me up and then running away?”

“TK, it’s not like we’re going to be celibate. I think you’ll be just fine” Carlos says, leaning down to place a quick hard kiss on his cheek before getting off the bed entirely.

“I won’t. You need to quit work and stay here with me” TK says dramatically.

“You want to quit our jobs and just stay home every day and have sex?” Carlos questions, grabbing a black jacket off the hanger.

TK shrugs “Seems like a good idea to me”

“You’d be bored a week in” Carlos retorts.

“I think you underestimate how much I appreciate married sex” TK calls to Carlos as he disappears back into the bathroom. TK slips out of bed to follow him, sidestepping around their forgotten luggage on the floor.

“Think how much you’ll appreciate it when there’s some anticipation,” Carlos says, his smile smug in the mirror. TK hates how much he enjoys it.

“That’s just mean” TK stands in front of Carlos when he tries to leave the room. He deftly pushes him back into the wall behind him, slotting a leg between his before Carlos has a chance to get away.

“I’m gonna be late for work” Carlos whispers and TK laughs as he meets Carlos for a kiss that he can tell Carlos is trying to keep chaste, but TK deepens it immediately, hand reaching to hold the back of Carlos’s neck as he tilts his head swallowing the gasp Carlos lets out. He sneaks his hand under Carlos’s shirt running it over his stomach that he has become very familiar with, fingertips dancing over the ridges of his abs.

“You can just blame your husband” TK whispers against his lips and Carlos sighs.

“You just said that to get me to give in”

“Is it working?”

“A little too well” Carlos admits but puts a hand onto TK’s chest and manages to create enough distance between them that TK sighs in defeat and allows him to step around him. He follows as he slings his bag over his shoulder and grabs a Tupperware container off the bench.

“Have a good day, Mr Strand-Reyes” TK teases and has the satisfaction of seeing Carlos falter in his movements, hand stuck in place on the loft door.

“That’s never going to get old is it?” Carlos stops, turning back with one hand still on the door.

“Nope” TK grins, sticking his tongue out for a moment and laughing when Carlos gives him a look that suggests he is aware of what TK is doing.

“Unpack your suitcase, husband” Carlos calls over his shoulder as he skips down the stairs and TK turns to frown at their luggage in the doorway to their bedroom.

“Goodbye honeymoon”
