“Where do you want this?”
“Oh, just put them next to the cabinet, I’ll go through them later.”
Following his mother’s instructions, Izuku puts the cardboard box full of books down.
He is helping her with spring cleaning, having invited Kacchan along as he is also spending his spring holiday at home. Right now, the blonde is sitting on the sofa opposite to Inko as he aggressively rubs the Midoriya silverware with polish foam. He frowns as he works on a particularly stubborn stain on a spoon.
“Deku! How long has it been since you cleaned these? They’re filthy!” he barks, holding out the spoon for Izuku to see. He is wearing a pair of white cotton gloves so as to keep his sweat from mixing with the polish.
“It has been a while,” Inko admits. “We skipped it the year Izuku was studying for UA entrance exams and the year after that, well…”
“…I got a bit too into it and accidentally bent one of the spoons,” Izuku completes the confession with a sheepish smile.
“Now they’re positively shining, though!” Inko says as she takes a gleaming fork out of the water where Kacchan has put the finished items to soak. “I don’t think even the Imperial Palace has silverware that looks this good.”
Kacchan huffs and returns his eyes to his work. He looks annoyed, but the red tips of his ears are a giveaway that he’s secretly pleased. He looks so adorable Izuku’s heart swells.
“Kacchan can do anything,” he says, leaning down and planting a kiss on the other’s cheek.
Kacchan’s wide-eyed stare is Izuku’s first clue that something is amiss. It takes him a couple seconds to remember that his mother is also in the room, fork frozen in her hand.
To be clear: Izuku and Kacchan have been dating for a while. Everyone in the class knows about them, so no one in the dorms bats an eye at some casual displays of affection. Initially, there was some cooing from some of the girls and whistles from Kaminari and Sero, but even those died down when everyone simply got used to the state of affairs.
It has become so natural that Izuku just went and kissed his boyfriend in front of his mother…who has not yet been informed about the her son’s current relationship status.
Izuku flounders, jumping away from Kacchan and gesturing with his hands as he tries to come up with a way to explain himself.
“She’s not dumb, Deku,” Kacchan sighs and puts the spoon on the table before straightening his posture. Izuku snaps his mouth shut and also takes a seat on the sofa. The situation feels weirdly formal even though it’s still just Izuku’s own mother sitting opposite to them.
They explain the current status of their relationship as Inko accepts it without much fanfare.
“Do Mitsuki-san and Masaru-san know about this?” she asks eventually.
“No, they don’t,” Izuku shakes his head, glancing at Kacchan for confirmation.
Izuku’s mother tuts at the response.
“Well, that won’t do. Just a moment, I think I still have it…”
About fifteen minutes later both boys are standing in front of Kacchan’s house, Izuku holding a beautifully decorated can of expensive black tea Inko kept for emergency gift purposes.
“So how do we break it to the hag? Maybe you should French me outside the living room window until she looks out.”
“N-no way I’m doing that!”
“I’m kidding, genius” Kacchan pinches Izuku’s nose and reaches for the door handle with his other hand. “Come on, then.”
Izuku swallows and grips the tea can tighter as he steps inside the house.
He wants to do this part right, at least.
