" . . . So I said to her, Hey, if I'm going to come over, I'd appreciate a bottle or two already chilled."
Wade chuckled at Ben's relaxed way of describing the demands he made of friends. "What'd she say to that?"
"She said that if I'd call before dropping in, she might." He laughed and pushed himself up off the sofa to pour another round of drinks. "She's a great woman. One of the best people I've ever known.
"Yeah? You ever tell her that?"
"Oh, sure. Plenty of times. She's my best friend. Like a sister to me."
"That's good." He took a long sip of the Manhattan he'd been handed. "That kind of family - You've got to hold onto them."
"Damn right. Her husband's a great guy, too." He'd settled back onto the sofa and was nodding off.
Wade grabbed the comforter on the back of the recliner and draped it over Ben. "Sleep tight, Benny Boo."
