"Hey bud!" Tina jogged up next to him as they left the school gates.
Gavin sighed internally. "Hey Tina. When will you start using my name?"
"Never!" She poked his arm, then linked them together at the elbows. "So what's the game plan?"
Gavin shrugged, "I dunno. Probably wait until she's had her tea, then tell her."
"Yeah. Your mom's pretty chill."
He smiled. "She's just cool like that. Doubt she'll be bothered by it, I'm just anxious, you know?"
Tina nodded in agreement, "Fair. Coming out to my own parents was bad enough, not looking forwards to telling your mom I'm a lesbian."
"Ha! She'd love that," he teased.
They carried on walking, Tina only pausing to toss some wrappers in the trash. She had a tendency to line her pockets with snacks and eat them throughout the school day.
"Only a few minutes until Mama Reed interrogates you! You know she always knows when something's up." Tina bumped his shoulder.
"...I'm not gonna survive tonight, you're both gonna find something to mock me about."
"Yup!"
The front door closed with a click, but Mrs Reed must have heard them coming a mile away because she came out to meet the two immediately.
The woman leaned out from the living room door, gasping with delight. "Tina! You have not visited for a while!" She hugged them both tightly, almost bouncing in place.
"Hey Mama Reed!" Tina hugged her back, Gavin already moving away to take his shoes off as they spoke.
"Nonsense! I am Lora. You know this!" Lora patted Tina on the shoulder with a cheery smile.
"C'mon, mom, Teeny's never gonna learn that." Gavin returned, grinning at Tina's outraged expression.
"I am not short!"
Tina stormed into the living room with a pout, but Lora leaned in close to her son, "She still has some room to grow, hmm? Tina needs to eat more."
"I heard that!"
"So, darling Tina, why come to visit?"
Tina blinked innocently. "What are you talking about, Lora? Me and Gav hang out all the time."
Gavin sipped at his drink, hating the tension but loving the drama anyways.
Lora raised an eyebrow, "Now, now. I am not old woman." She pointed at Tina. "You are hiding something! You can tell me, I'll only be mad at Gavin."
Outraged, Gavin exclaimed: "Why me?!"
"It's quite often your fault, Gavin. I love you, you are my little boy, but you have some questionable ideas."
Now it was Tina's turn to enjoy Gavin's suffering.
Gavin quieted down. "Mom, I have something to tell you, and hopefully you won't be mad at me for it."
Lora zeroed in on him. "Alright. But I joke, dear, you never do anything too bad. What will you tell me?"
Gavin glanced at Tina. She nodded at him, and he found his words. "Mom? …I'm gay."
Lora barely blinked. "Oh?"
"Yeah. Is that- okay?" Gavin was nearly holding his breath.
He needn't have been worried.
"Tina, why make me worry? Lovely, idiot girl." Lora scolded playfully, "Gavin, this does not matter to me. You are my son, and I will dote on you with husband or with wife."
Gavin smiled, suddenly much calmer, "Thanks, mom."
"Mhmm! Now then, who is hungry?" Both teens raised their hands. "Thought so, Tina always visits for dinner." Lora lowered her voice, "She needs it, she is too small. Gavin will be twice as tall by year's end."
Tina sighed, not actually bothered. She was used to the height jokes by now.
Lora rose from her seat on the couch, reaching to pat her son on the back as she passed by. "But I expect to meet your man someday, Gavin. He best be a kind one, you deserve nothing less." Lora stopped in the doorway, and smiled sweetly. "And if he is a bad fit, we shall make him regret. Yes?"
Tina laughed. "Yes, Mrs Reed! That's what I've been telling him. Gavin's a softie at heart." She cooed, teasing Gavin until he pushed her away lightly.
"It's Lora, dear." Lora reminded kindly, "Mrs Reed makes me feel old. I have 5 years until 'Mrs'. I am 35 yet!" Tina smiled.
Gavin spoke up once more. "Thanks, mom. Really."
Lora moved close, pulling him in with an outstretched arm. "It's nothing, dear." She was only paused for a second before launching into action. "Now! Onto dinner." She moved into the kitchen, and the pair could hear her muttering. "Pasta? No, no… Ah, this should work…"
Tina and Gavin were sat beside each other once more, listening to the clattering of pots in the kitchen.
"Tina, it's your turn next. I wanna see you deal with this."
"Ha! As if. I've got to wait a couple months, at least."
"Sure, Teeny."
