Chapter Text
Donna can’t remember when she wasn’t Gwen’s best friend, she’s known the other since at least kindergarten.
So by principle, she’s known all of Gwen’s crushes, enemies, and new friends. Which, she’s glad Gwen trusts her enough for that, it’s great. But, she knows she isn’t a main character in her story. Just the side character in her story, she would say play but plays are too delicate and planned out, and Gwen’s life is anything but.
Gwen’s life is like watching your favorite TV show, for Donna at least, she loves watching it from afar but close-up it’s overwhelming. She loves watching Gwen fight, she’s great at it, she roots for Gwen and has the biggest smile on her face every time. She and Gwen could get in a fight about something huge, and she would still be there, cheering her on.
And she wouldn’t trade that for anything, Gwen is like a sunflower after a hurricane, still bright and standing even after going through a traumatic experience.
Gwen was spending the night at her house when Finn disappeared. She would’ve chased after her, but knew better than to barge in onto screen when it isn’t on the script.
She’s fine watching from a distance, the lights burn her eyes and make her want to look okay, but she doesn’t like missing even a second of Gwen’s show. She knows that Gwen would assure her she loves when she’s around, but she always feels out of place, and like she wasn’t supposed to be in this scene.
Gwen loves being near her, and she makes that known, but she can’t seem to accept this fact. Donna will always want to be near her, but the burn and harshness of the lights is too much sometimes.
Donna is completely content sitting in the first row, watching, and cheering Gwen on. She’ll be fine, even if her only lines are just cheers and pushing Gwen in a way that advances the plot and moves the storyline along.
Even if all she craves is to be a main character in her show, she knows it isn’t in the script.
