Chapter Text
Damian: Pay attention in class, Kent
Jon: Class hasn’t even started!!!!!!!
Jon: You’re lucky, you get to go on a mission with our dads :/
Damian: Foolish, you are untrained and don’t have any of the powers your father’s side has
Damian: Leave this to professional heroes, Jon. Besides, Mother says education is important
Jon: Yet you miss 90 percent of school
Damian: I do online school now, makes it a lot easier.
Damian: I know when your class bell rings. Pay attention, Kent
Damian: we can hang out when I’m back
Jon: Sounds fun :)
Jon sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he put his phone away. He pushed down the feelings about his dad being gone on a mission again deep, deep down. It was his life, especially when he was the only Kryptonian, or half-Kryptonian, without powers.
“Hi, dork,” Georgie said, sitting next to her best friend. “Dad on a business trip again?”
“Yeah, what can you do, though?” Jon asked with an awkward shrug.
“Sometimes I think your dad doesn’t exist,” she snorted. “Seriously, how much have you seen him this year? Four times?”
“A month, scattered throughout the year,” Jon said, shrugging. “He’s got a busy job.”
“Still…” Georgie frowned, but the two quickly changed the topic.
They were discussing the latest book from their book club when the bell rang, and their teacher cleared his throat, dragging all of the students’ attention to him. Next to the teacher was a kid Jon never saw before. He had messy pink hair, brown eyes, and glasses. He was pretty cute if Jon was going to admit anything to himself.
“Class, this is our new transfer student, Jay Nakamura. He’s from Gamorra,” the teacher introduced. “Please treat him kindly, Jay; you may sit next to Nancy.”
“Thank you, sir,” Jay said with a warm smile and sat where he was indicated.
Jon’s eyes automatically followed Jay to his seat, which was across the room from the half-Kryptonian. He didn’t know why, but there was just something about Jay that drew his attention.
“Better pay attention,” Georgie muttered, bringing Jon’s attention away from Jay and to her. “You know Mr. Anderson can get pissy if you don’t.”
“Right,” Jon muttered back. “Thanks.”
Jon opened his notebook and quickly started taking notes, easily keeping up with the long indeed lecture of his teacher. It was second nature at this point. It was a skill he got from his mom, one Lois Lane, that helped her in her journalism career.
While Jon didn't think he wanted to get into journalism, he did see the need for the skill. It helped him prioritize knowledge and skills and absorb information much easier Plus; his school notes were immaculate, no matter the class. He didn’t win several science fairs, robotics championships, and mathletes and decathlon awards just by luck, after all.
The nerdy achievements definitely didn’t make Jon popular, however. Most everyone in school had immediately clocked him as a total nerd and geek. If it weren't for the fact that years of helping on the Kent farm in Smallville as well as playing soccer helped him build muscle, he'd probably be bullied and/or pushed around by the other kids.
Georgie was his only friend at school. Sure, Damian was his best friend and introduced him to several other friends of his, like Connor, but he was hardly around. He was either in Gotham or out on a mission, and most of the people he introduced Jon to were also heroes, including ones who didn't live in Gotham.

Jay was in several more of his classes and even in Jon’s lunch period. He seemed really cool and bright and, from the brief conversations they had, was just as big a nerd as Jon and Georgie. He was also one of the funniest, most sarcastic people Jon’s ever met. He reminded Jon a lot of Damian, without the lack of social grace Jon’s best friend had.
Maybe he should talk to Georgie about adding Jay to their friend group.
