One Mistake

Summary:

Looking back on it, maybe Reki really should've brought wheels for the rain

Whumtober day 4

No. 4 - Dead on your feet

Prompt: Can't pass out

Work Text:

Looking back, maybe Reki should’ve put waterproof wheels for his skateboard. It had been raining all day, and the redhead was bored. While he’d usually facetime Langa, his boyfriend had been helping his mother out around the house, so Reki had done whatever he could to pass the time.

By the time Langa showed up and picked him up for S, the wheels didn’t cross his mind. He desperately wished he’d brought the rain wheels. See, another skater had challenged him, and Reki wasn’t one to turn down a beef. The other skater seemed nice enough, and the pavement was only damp, so Reki had agreed.

Now, halfway down the steep hill, Reki desperately wished he had his rain wheels. The skateboard gave another lurch, and Reki pushed his weight down in an attempt to keep the board steady. His heart pounded, and sweat dripped down his forehead, this was undoubtedly one of the more reckless things he had done, and he’d raced Adam a second time.

The other skater was a ways away behind him, likely trying to avoid bailing due to the rain. Reki breathed out and tried to imagine Langa, his boyfriend, always helped calm him down when he got worked up. Reki shifted his weight forward and narrowed his eyes to see through the rain. Shit , this was bad.

A curve was coming up, and Reki grinned; he could make it; he’d skated without rain wheels many times. Plus, he’d been skating for years and skated in worse conditions. The redhead let up some of his weight and grit his teeth; his heartbeat was controlled and steady; Langa was likely yelling his name at the finish line. The rest of his friends were probably cheering him on.

It only took one second.

Reki lost concentration for one second.

The board went out right from under him.

The next seconds were a bit of a blur. He felt himself flying in the air and put his arm out in front of him, gravity sent him to the ground, and his head collided with something hard. There was a crack somewhere, and his vision went black. Then it returned, and everything felt wrong .

The world was spinning, or maybe his body was still rolling; Reki couldn’t tell. The redhead took a sharp breath, and the pain flooded in. His head was pounding, and something wet trickled down his temple. He squeezed his eyes shut; damn, he was dizzy. His stomach swirled, and he knew he’d given himself a bad head injury.

Reki shifted, a gasp tearing itself from his lips. Ok, no moving, moving was bad. His hip ached with a vengeance, and why the hell did his arm hurt so bad? His arm felt heavy and like it was filled with lead. His brow furrowed; it didn’t feel like any of his other broken arms.

He swallowed and forced his gaze down to his arm. He was not prepared for what he saw. His arm was bent at an odd angle, the bone poking through the skin. There was a thin stream of blood pooling from the wound.

Oh god, oh god, oh shit.

He was vaguely aware of voices coming closer and of the sounds he was making, low moans that sounded nothing like him. Oh god, it hurt. His head was slowly starting to fog, and his head felt light.

Oh shit, he was going to pass out .

But he knew he couldn’t because there was no telling how bad his concussion was, and Langa would be so angry if he didn’t at least try to stay awake.

Suddenly, a hand was on his shoulder, and then he was rolled over onto his back. His head throbbed, and nausea swirled in his gut. He gasped at the sharp pain, and then blue hair appeared in his vision, and he knew he couldn’t pass out yet.

Langa was saying something to him, but he couldn’t hear it. His boyfriend looked so worried about him. His boyfriend cupped his cheek, and Reki leaned into it. Reiki tried to breathe through the pain but it only flared with each breath.

Don’t pass out, don’t pass out.

It became a mantra as his hearing slowly came back, and Langa’s voice yelled those words along with “Hospital” and “Get the car, now,”

“You’re doing so well, Reki,” Langa said, and Reki heard the crack in his voice. He frowned; that wasn’t right; Langa shouldn’t be crying.

Someone was wrapping up his wrist and moving him onto something, but he kept his focus on the slowly darkening face of his boyfriend.

Oh, he thought, I’m losing consciousness.

There was no point in fighting it anymore, his vision was black, and his hearing had gone out.

I wonder how bad the damage to my board was.

Something jostled him to awareness. The jump from unconsciousness to the waking world felt instantaneous. He felt warm, and the pain that had been an ache in the darkness seemed to be gone. The boy groaned lowly and tilted his face away from the light.

His eyes fluttered open, the memory of the accident returning to him with startling clarity. Reki gasped and forced his eyes to open. His arm…was it still there? “Reki?” A voice softly called.

The redhead turned his face to the voice, a small smile pulling at his lips. Langa looked exhausted and pissed off. There was a frown on his lips that didn’t suit him at all.

“Hey,” Reki croaked.

“You’re such an idiot, Reki!” The blue-haired boy burst

“Who’re you calling an idiot?” Reki groaned, wincing at the pain that filled his head.

“You! Why didn’t you have rainproof wheels on your skateboard? Do you have any idea how much worse you could’ve been hurt?”

Reki stared at the boy as he panted, the anger on Langa’s face flooding out of him. “I’m sorry, I was just scared. I thought you were. . .you were so out of it,”

“No, you’re right; I should have,” Reki brushed the hair out of Langa’s face with his god air. His injured arm was wrapped in gauze with a halo-like device on it.

“I’m glad you understand that because I can’t lose anyone else,” Langa’s voice trembled.

“You won’t,”

That was a promise Reki was going to keep
