Work Text:
He almost lost her. Again.
They had ended things a while back. More like she had ended things and he had given her the space she needed. It never felt right to him but he knew how Jamie’s mind worked. She was a loner after all. Just like him. That’s probably the reason why they understood each other so well.
It wasn’t like they never saw each other anyway. Quiet the opposite actually. They worked together and they were still friends. Kind of. There had been some “just for tonight” excuses that definitely weren’t “just for tonight”.
Scott had been wanting to bring the subject and talk about what they were or what they were doing, but he was a coward. He was scared that she would feel pressured and run the other way again. And he couldn’t risk that, not again. He cared about her deeply. More than he would’ve liked to admite. There was something about her that made him feel free. A feeling that hadn’t been familiar since his mother left. He knew he could trust Jamie with his life. It surprised him when he realized. He loved her. He wasn’t sure when it had started but it had. Jamie had that effect on people, even when she could be a little rude and straightforward. He knew she had her demons, specially since Prague. She hadn’t talked about it and he hadn’t asked, but he knew it was personal for her. The nights they’d spent together after their breakup hadn’t had much talking.
The case was a tough one. Organized crime. He hated it. Not the memory of Italy any of them wanted to have.
An American citizen had turned up dead and it could be linked back to the mob. The Italian police collaborated and had informants. Everything seemed to be going OK until it wasn’t. An informant sold them out and the only thing Scott could remember from that moment was the gunshots and Cameron’s anxious voice in his ear saying “they took Jamie”.
He had spent the following 6 hours snapping at everyone and thinking the worst. It had taken him a few minutes to clear his head and focus on finding her. He knew Cameron was extremely worried too since she couldn’t stop pacing. He had wished he could say something to her but his mind was too scrambled.
They’d ended tracking down her location thanks to Andre and his magical technology. Scott wasn’t the first to enter the warehouse but he lied his eyes on her immediately. She was chained to a chair barely conscious. Her blood was everywhere and bruises were already forming on her skin.
“It’s OK, Jamie. I got you”
She seemed to hear him by her slight smile.
“I’m going to lay you on the ground, OK?”
“OK” her voice was small.
He could tell she was in a lot of pain. He took her hand in his.
“You’re going to be fine. Help is coming”
Her only response was the squeeze she gave his hand.
When the ambulance arrived, he knew he couldn’t leave yet. Cameron went with her instead, promising she would be updating him. And she did. His phone didn’t stop ringing for the hour he spent in the warehouse sorting things with the police.
She’s going to be fine. She just needs some rest and some company😉
When he arrived at the hospital Jamie was sleeping. Cameron left the room they were in when she saw him.
“How is she?” he asked.
“Physically fine. She will be sore and bruised for some time. She has a lot of cuts that will probably take some time to heal though”
“And mentally?”
“Well, I don’t think she should be alone. At least not for tonight. I know she’s scared. Not that she’s said it, but I can tell”
“OK, I’ll stay. You can go to the hotel. Raines is there. You two can leave for Budapest tomorrow”
Cameron nodded.
“OK, but I’ll call you. A lot by the way”
“I know you will”
“Take care of her”
Scott stayed next to her until she woke up.
“Hey there” he greeted her.
“Scott” she smiled and took his hand.
“I hope this doesn’t become a habit”
“What?”
“You in a hospital”
“Well, at least I have you here”
“You really scared us, Jamie”
“Us?” she questioned laughing softly.
“Don’t make me say it”
“I want you to”
He only nodded and kissed her forehead.
“Does it hurt?”
“Yeah, but I’m OK. I just want to go back to Budapest”
“We will. When the doctor says it’s OK”
They stayed silent for a while. The silence weighed more than words.
“You can ask, you know”
“What did they do to you?”
“They wanted to know what we knew. They didn’t take lightly my jokes and games”
He just shook his head.
“Jamie…”
“They were going to kill me once they got the information they wanted. I had to stall”
He nodded.
“I’m glad we found you before that”
“Me too. I wasn’t sure how much longer I could handle it”
“I’m sorry”
She hit him on the shoulder with her free hand.
“It’s not your fault, Scott”
“I know, but still”
She smiled softly.
“Will you stay?”
“Yes, if that’s OK with you”
“Yeah”
