J.L. McCabe hated waiting. He hated it even more when it involved word on the condition of his chief investor, Jake Styles. Jake had been aboard a plane when his cover was blown and after a brief fight with the pilot, had been shot and the pilot had fallen out of the plane, leaving a wounded Jake to pilot the plane. JL had been contacted by the airport control tower and having been a pilot for over 30 years, he was allowed to talk Jake through the flying and the landing of the plane. There was a time when Jake had passed out from the loss of blood and could not be reached which had McCabe and his assistant Derek Mitchell, talking to Jake about previous cases in hopes of waking him up. When they were about to give up hope and thoughts of Jake crashing, Jake came awake and was able to successfully land the plane. McCabe now sit in the hospital waiting room, growing more impatient. Derek Mitchell had returned with a cup of coffee, and joined him in uneasy silent.
When McCabe could no longer stand the waiting and was about to go find someone for an update, the doctor that had been treating Jake appeared. McCabe and Derek stood to greet him, and anxiously awaited the news. The doctor advised that Jake had made it through surgery but was critical due to the amount of blood loss, but believed that he would make a full recovery with time. McCabe and Derek let out a collective sigh of relief and asked if and when they would be allowed to see Jake. The doctor advised that it would be a few hours and that they should go home and get some rest and return later in the day, but both men stated they weren’t leaving until they could see him.
It was several hours later before McCabe and Derek were allowed a few minutes to see Jake.
