Work Text:

Rain pelted April and Mimi’s house throughout the day, streaming down their windows continuously. The sound of rain had woken both of them up that morning, and even now, at 5:30PM, it was still raining with intensity. There wasn’t much to do, being inside most of the day, but earlier, April had found some box of cake mix – bought for some reason she can’t quite remember – and decided that baking with Mimi would be a nice way to pass the time.

Mimi turned to face her girlfriend, gathering bowls and utensils. “Could you read the back of the box to me?”

“Wait, like, just the ingredients? Or the instructions too?” April answered, the small box sitting in one of her hands, the other pointing her fingertip at her chin.

“Just the ingredients.” Mimi echoed.

April’s eyes darted to the back of the box, looking for the ingredients list. “Okay, so the cake mix…”

“Got that.”

“Butter.”

“How much?”

April looked back to the box. “Half a cup!” she replied, walking over to the cupboards, looking for a measuring cup. A lot of the utensils in the cupboard were pink, heart-shaped, or both. April loved those things, especially whenever Mimi wanted something like that. She always bought them for her, small gifts to show her appreciation.

She set the cup on the table before looking back to the box. “Three eggs.” She mumbled, watching Mimi take a carton of eggs from their pantry and place them on the counter with the rest of the supplies and ingredients.

“Anything else, April?” Mimi asked.

“And also a cup of water.” She added, not really sure if it mattered because they already had a measuring cup, a pink one with My Melody on it. The pink was just tinted, as opposed to another at the store that just came in a solid pink. When Mimi saw this, she spent a while confused why there would be a measuring cup where you couldn’t even see what you were measuring.

“I think we have everything!” Mimi spun towards April on her heel as April tore open the cardboard cake mix box. April strutted towards the kitchen bench as she took the cake mix from its packaging. She then tried opening the packet, though no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t tear it open.

“Oh. My. Fucking. God! This shit is so hard to open!” She slammed the packet onto the counter with frustration.

Mimi quickly picked it up and easily broke it open, tipping it into the large silver bowl. She checked the box again, before quickly walking over to preheat the oven, mumbling ‘350F’ under her breath and switching on the oven. It made a loud clicking noise as she turned the dial.

While she was doing that, April started cracking eggs into the bowl, concentrating intensely so that no eggshell would get into the mixture. This sight amused Mimi greatly, so much so she redirected all her focus onto her girlfriend. Without even noticing it, a faint smile appeared on her face. Her thoughts were interrupted by a giggly April.

“Ohmygodddd Mimi, I saw you smiling at me like that!” April twirled her hair around her finger, leaning closer to her girlfriend. “Do you have a crush on me or something?” she teased, slightly dragging out her words for emphasis. Mimi looked at her. Still smiling, but about 5 times more confused. “We’ve been dating for three years?”

April beamed at her. “Do we put the cake in the oven now?”

“No, not yet.” She shook her head. “I think we just have to add the water and then stir it. How much water did we need again?”

“One cup!”

Mimi nods, filling up a cup with water, staring intently so she’d have the right amount. Once there was enough, she quickly poured it in. “Do you want to stir? I have to set the timer.” April nods, taking a spoon to whisk the contents of the bowl thoroughly. Mimi set a timer for the oven for when the batter was ready.

“Is everything good?” April asked, tilting the bowl towards Mimi to let her see the cake mixture.

Mimi nodded. “Yeah, all good to go!” she said, as she put the dough in the oven, pressing the "start" button.

“How long do we have to wait for?”

“Half an hour.” Mimi replied, walking over to the couch with April following behind her. They sat down next to each other, leaning into each other and linking their hands together. April used her spare hand to turn on the tv to some show they both liked. April pulled a blanket over both of them, absentmindedly rubbing her thumb against Mimi’s hand.

“So, how was your day?” April asked Mimi.

As Mimi recounted her day, April started gazing lovingly at her without noticing. Mimi told her every detail, spending an extended amount of it talking about her car, but April didn’t mind at all. She was overjoyed to hear her girlfriend happy and loved listening to her talk about things she’s passionate about.

“What about you?” Mimi asked, after a pause.

“Well,” April started, a small smile forming on her lips. “You’ve made it really amazing, Mimi.” She answered, turning her girlfriend’s cheeks a faint shade of pink.

The two of them sat in comfortable silence as close to each other as they possible, the only sounds eminating from the TV and the platter of rain.

“You know,” April started, breaking the silence. “I’ve always really loved this scene! The one where they dance together?” She pointed at the screen.

Silently, Mimi stood up, reluctantly offering her hand to April with a slight smile. April looked at Mimi, and then at her hand before taking it. The two of them started to slow dance together. They followed to the rhythm of the song coming from the TV. They spent a while smiling at each other, spinning around and dipping each other.

By the time the song had ended, the two of them were kissing. Mimi held April’s waist, pulling her in close. April's hands found themselves in Mimi hair, softly pulling on her roots; and on her nape, resting contentedly. As the oven timer went off, they slowly pulled away from each other.

“The cake is done!” April smiled, the two of them walking hand in hand to the oven. Mimi briskly slid the baking tray onto the counter top.

“Are we going to decorate it?” Mimi turned slightly towards April, who nodded eagerly.

“Of course!” She walked towards the pantry, scanning for some icing, quickly grabbing it off the shelf, and brought it back to Mimi.

The two began adding light pink icing onto the cake; April making a heart shape on the top, while Mimi made some flowers around the edges. They stepped back to admire their work, both of them with hands on their hips.

“It looks really tasty!” April said, as Mimi nodded in agreement.

“It does!” she paused for a moment, before turning to face April. “You know, this might be one of the best days I’ve had in a while.”

April beamed at her, eyes twinkling in delight. “I’m glad.” She says as she takes her girlfriend’s hand.
