Work Text:
Roy woke up to the smell of pancakes and eggs. That explained the empty side of the bed.
Roy got out of bed and walked to the kitchen quietly.
Not that he’d be able to sneak up on the former boy wonder. Roy reached for a pancake.
“Nope.” Dick called out as he turned around.
“Alfred taught you well.” Roy said as he dropped his hand.
He walked to Dick and they kissed.
As he pulled away at last, Dick sighed happily. “If that’s my greeting, I should make breakfast for you more often.”
Roy chuckled then became suspicious. “You normally only make breakfast to soften a blow.”
“First of all, not true. I make breakfast all the time.”
Roy raised an eyebrow.
“Second of all, Bruce wants to come over.”
“Knew it.” Roy declared.
Dick spoke, “I know. I told him to wait. For a guy who regularly does stakeouts, he’s impatient.”
Roy sighed. “What does he want?”
“Who knows? Says it’s important.” Dick answered.
Roy has never been fond of Bruce.
“If you want to invite him, I’ll back you. If not, I’ll back you.” Roy promised.
Dick smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “Thanks.”
A knock on the door sounded. Roy put his head on Dick’s shoulder and groaned.
“Why am I not surprised?” Dick mumbled then went to open the door.
Bruce stood there.
“So, I said wait.” Dick points out as he moves out of the way.
“This is urgent. What did you tell Damian?” Bruce asked as he entered.
Roy crossed his arms and didn’t greet the older man.
Dick sighed. “Can we have breakfast while we talk?”
Bruce looked at Roy, who met his gaze. “I suppose.”
Breakfast is as awkward as anyone would assume it would be.
As soon as Dick and Roy took a few bites, Bruce turned to his son. “You offered Nightwing to Damian?” It was more of a demand or statement than a question.
Dick took a deep breath. “Yes.” He said simply.
“He’s not ready to move on from Robin.” Bruce declared.
“That’s not for you to decide, Bruce.” Dick said. “You don’t get to decide when he’s no longer Robin. Neither do I. I didn’t say he had to become Nightwing immediately or ever. I just said it’s there for him.”
“You are punishing me for firing you after all this time.”
Dick’s eyes harden. “I am looking out for my Robin when he decides he doesn’t want to deal with all this pressure, Bruce!” He exclaimed. “I was barely holding it together after you fired me. You fired me as if we weren’t partners. You fired me from a position I made to honor my parents!”
Dick was breathing hard. “I refuse to let you do that to Damian or any of them!”
Bruce looked at him for a while. Then he got up and walked out of the apartment.
Dick let out a yell. Roy put a hand on his shoulder and brought him in a hug.
They sat together as Dick let out a shudder.
“I got you.” Roy assured in a whisper.
One year later, Nightwing flew again.
Dick smiled as he watched his brother.
Then he went to bed with Roy.
