Chapter Text
February 16th, 1972
You sit on your bedside after a long day of running outside. It isn't a very big bed, nor do you have much room in between the rows and rows of beds you have to maze through to even get to your own. It took you years to memorize your own bed and location of your items. The only things you owned were a sketch pad, a pencil, and a small rectangular music box. You liked to sketch in your sketchbook, making room every time one of the pages got filled. After all these years, hundreds of sketches took up around ten pages of your sketchbook. That's a lot, if you spoke about the organization level for a 9 year old. You took out your music box, staring at the note that was always stuck on top of it.
' Do not open until your 10th birthday. Only then shall you find out the truth.'
You'd followed these rules, and tomorrow was finally the day you would be able to open the box. You'd been excited all week about it, and your caretakers were wondering why you were so cheerful. They were nice, all but Ms. Shackford. She was the roughest caretaker any child had seen in the 1970s. You were wondering if it was worth it, staying here, in this comfortable life. No one came by to even check if you wanted to be adopted, not anymore at least. No one wanted you. It was.. sorrowing, in a way. But you were as optimistic as ever, so no one could bring you down.
When you had heard about the Prosecutors of Light, you'd been so cheerful. Black magic would finally be gone from the land! Yes, that's right. You lived in a land full of magic. Everyone had a certain kind; Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and so many others. But the most despised type of magic was black magic. It was used for evil purposes.. or so you thought. You'd finished with all your duties early, wanting to go to sleep sooner so that you would be able to open your music box. You wondered what ' the truth' inside was, could it be about your parents? Did you have siblings? Maybe it even had a magic crystal? Your magic powers haven't appeared yet, unlike everyone else in the orphanage. You wondered when yours would show up...
You managed to get just a bit of shut-eye.
But not before a loud clash of glass caught your attention.
You sat up quite suddenly, making you slightly light-headed when you got up. You tried sliding off your bed to land on the ground..
But you started falling, and falling, in a purple abyss with white and black. It was all blurry and mixed and deranged. You curled up, and you suddenly couldn't breathe. You tried to, but it was no use. Claws were at your throat, and you blinked a bit. The abyss was gone, and a dark figure with fur and red eyes growled at you from the dark. " You won't last long..." Is all you heard before screaming, and you woke up after hearing the smashing of bones in your head.
It was all just a dream... phew.
'More like a nightmare, little missy.' "WH-WHO SAID THAT!?" You hopped out of bed, relief replaced with confusion and fear. 'I'm the voice in your head, dummy. I've been waiting ten years to speak with you..' You were very confused now, and more questions kept appearing in your head. Voice in my head? Why haven't I heard it until now? And.. "..What caused you to wait ten years? And what even are you, really, if I couldn't hear you for that long?" 'Oh, don't be so silly. One, i'm not ACTUALLY a voice in your head. Two, I'm more like.. your soul, you could say. But, if you didn't know already, we prefer to be called Consciences.' "Wait... YOU'RE my Conscience!?" 'You could say that. Look under your bed.' "Why..?" 'Just do it, Y/N.'
You considered for a second. If this guy's my conscience, then I should be able to believe him ... right?
You peeked under your bed, and saw two sets of eyes peeking out at you. They were a blue-ish green tint, and a few markings on fur glowed with the same tint, but greener the farther they were from the eyes. You jerked, surprised. "AH!" You fell off your bed. You're lucky you were a runt, or else everyone else would've woken up by now.
A little rabbit with four eyes hopped out from under the bed to meet your upside-down gaze. You rolled over to see upright the beautiful creature you were staring at. "Wow.." " Cool, am I right? " "Woah! So you ARE my Conscience!" "Now, don't go around acting like Pinocchio. Get up and open your music box already! " "H-huh?" Your Conscience turned around, and came back, gently pushing the music box towards you. "Now open it before you explode with excitement!"
You nodded, excited as ever, but hesitated, wondering one thing. "Why.. why wait ten years to give me this..? Also what should I call you?" The bunny stood on it's hind legs with a thoughtful face, putting it small, fluffy white front paws together and taking in a sharp, echoey inhale. "Two things. One, call me Nishoi. Two... there are many things you would've failed to comprehend if you learned any sooner what you are about to learn now. Listen to me very carefully. After this very moment, you must leave this place, hide me away, take a bag with food and money, everything you will need. You will understand once you read the message inside."
This new information made you tremble slightly, but you nodded. You felt like after tonight, your life would change completely.
