Lightning cracks and Niko hears a shriek from the other room. Next to him on the bed Joel shifts and groans so Niko knows the cry had woken him too.
‘I’ll go,’ he says, kissing Joel’s shoulder as he goes to get up. But their bedroom door has already creaked open. Joonas half carrying half holding a shivering and sobbing Aleksi as Olli peers nervously over their shoulders. Niko sighs, clearly all their fledglings have been disrupted by the storm.
‘C’mon,’ he says, ‘close the door.’ Joonas and Aleksi stumble towards the bed and Olli closes the door before he pads over. Niko opens his arms and Joonas guides Aleksi down to lie on him. Niko rubs his back, rumbling in his chest to try and help him relax. Aleksi is still crying hard, hand closing and opening in Niko’s t-shirt, kneading his clothes for comfort as Niko starts to gently lick his face.
Joonas and Olli have wriggled into the bed as well, Joel curling contentedly around Olli like he’s a body pillow as Joonas lays behind him. Lightning cracks again and the fledglings shift nervously and Niko’s glad to have them close.
