Work Text:

Two children ran inside, hand in hand, fleeing from the cold. One of the children shut the wooden door quickly. The other went to check on the much younger children and the mother hen of the family.

The young one hopped up a ladder, to see the sight of the little one's in a deep sleep, he'd have to thank Akane in the morning.

"They're fast asleep, Yuu-chan."

The blonde haired child smiled at Yuu, climbing down the ladder and grabbing a lighter, he turned to the raven haired child and grinned. "You have the candle, right?"

"Obviously."

The grumpy boy went to sit down on their family table, placing the candle at the center. The other quickly joined.

"Oi, be careful with that thing, Mika." Mika couldn't help but feel his heart warm at Yuu's concern.

"Of course."

Mika flicked the lighter a few times, he struggled a bit, but he knew he could do it. It had to work . They couldn't have stolen it from a vampire for nothing!

Yuu's face smeared with concern, as did the boy trying to light it. However, relief washed over them when a warm flame arose. Mika wasted no time in lighting the candle.

Mika sat down, putting the lighter away, sighing in relief. The dark place that they called home brightened ever so slightly. The candle provided only little warmth in the cold, but it'd have to do. Perhaps they could try to find some more, Mika thought.

"I don't think this will be enough.. "Mika grimaced at his best friend's words. " I know," he gulped. "We'll figure something out, like we always do." Yuu nodded, although Mika doubted it was with sincerity.

"We can't stay here forever.." Yuu stared into the candle's flames, deep in thought. "We'll get out of here, when the time is right." They'd have to. The family may start to go insane if they're purpose is to be livestock for much longer.

"I don't wanna wait." The emerald eyed boy whined.

"Well, we can start planning now." He was sure this would make Yuu feel a bit better. And he was right, the once whiny child lit up.

"When we get out I wanna try all the food we can find!"

"Shhh," Mika nodded towards the upper floor and Yuu muttered an apology. "I meant how we could escape but.. It is nice to dream about what we could do."

"I think it'd be nice to just see the world again," Yuu looked across the table at Mika, "What about you? What do you want?"

Mika was taken aback, he hadn't quite thought that far ahead yet, far too busy planning possible escapes and caring for his family. What did he want?

"Mika?"

"Oh, sorry Yuu-chan, hmm.." Mika always loved how he and his best friend took care of the children. It felt right.

"I think.. raising children together would make me very happy." It was a bit difficult for Mika to say aloud what he wanted, but he was curious if Yuu wanted the same.

"Really? I mean–" The raven haired huffed and turned to stare at a wall, his cheeks turning a rosy pink. He was embarrassed!

"Hehe, Yuu-chan is so easy to fluster."

"It's not my fault you say weird things."

"But, would you like that?"

Mika got worried when his friend wasn't responding.

"Y-y-yes.." He looked into Mika's sea blue eyes but quickly looked away out of shame. Mika's heart felt like it may explode.

"Well, I'll do everything to make that happen, Yuu-chan, leave it to the great Mikaela!" Yuu felt like vomiting at Mika's ego, not like he was any better, though.

"Ah, it's so late, Yuu-chan," Mika doubted Yuu minded staying up a bit more but he knew Yuu needed the rest. "Yea, yea.."

The blonde child went to hop back up the ladder, of course, he waited for his closest friend. Yuu brought the candle up with them, in hopes of it keeping everyone a bit warmer. (The truth is, Yuu has a tiny fear of the dark.)

Two children fled under their blankets, intertwining their hands together, both closed their eyes. Feeling safe in each other's presence.

The candle eventually died out from the wind, while the two children dreamt of their upcoming future.
