Chapter 1: A New Life

Daniel accompanied Winifred back to Salem, by a stressful trip through the regular airport this time. When they reached Salem, he helped her to get a job at the museum, using himself as a reference.

Later, he helped her to find a second-story apartment, already furnished and within a short bus trip to the museum. He did, however, have to co- sign with her because the apartment manager would not rent to someone who had no credit history.

Then they headed to the grocery store. He made sure that she had everything that she needed. Before returning to the apartment, he also made sure that she had sheets, towels, dishes, and anything else that she required.

Upon returning to the apartment, she was concerned about paying him back. "Daniel, I do not expect thee to pay for everything. I will pay thee back as soon as I can."

He shook his head. "Don't worry about it. Consider it a gift."

She opened the door as they carried the supplies into the apartment. "I do not take charity, and I absolutely will not be the subject of pity," she argued.

They set the supplies down on the couch and the counters. He walked over to her and took one of her hands in his. "I'm doing this because you're my friend, and I'm going to miss having you around," he admitted.

She blushed and gave him a small smile, unable to stay upset with him. "I suppose I shall miss thee as well."

"I could get a room at a hotel and stay in town for a couple of days," he offered.

She laughed and shook her head. "I must learn how to live in this new time on my own. How can I learn if thou continueth to do everything for me?"

He smiled back and nodded. "You're right. Let me know how the job goes?" he asked. She nodded.

He then gave her instructions on the electric stove, and on her cellular phone, that it should be plugged in every night. He had added Winifred and her sisters to his phone plan.

"You're sure you'll be alright?” he questioned.

She nodded. "Yes. I shall be fine. Please call me when you land. I trust thy airplanes not," she conveyed.

He sighed heavily, reluctant to release her hand. "I guess this is goodbye."

She shook her head. "Thee and I have shared far too many experiences for this to be a parting. This is 'until I see thee again,'" she told him.

"I think I can live with that," he responded. He released her hand to quickly scribble something on a piece of paper. "If you have an emergency and you can't reach me, this is Hammond's cell phone number," he explained.

She took it, thanked him, and put the note in the pocket of her skirt. Then he pulled her into a hug and left the apartment.

He spent the entire flight back to Colorado thinking about her, hoping that she would be alright. He called her when the plane landed. It took a second try for her to realize how to answer the phone, but she soon had the basics of the device figured out.
