Enchanted Evening

Summary:

Dean and Cas watch a sunset sitting on Baby's hood and drinking beer

Notes:

Fic for Day 10 based on the prompt Enchanted.

This one is short, tooth-rottingly sweet, and fluffy.

None of these Suptober fics will be beta read or have more than a cursory edit from me. I apologize if there are some typos or other issues in these stories. Please, don't bother pointing them out to me, I won't be coming back to edit them. Thank you.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

They’re out in the middle of nowhere. The land around them is as flat as it gets—no trees, no mountains and no rocky outcrops blocking the view. If you stop and take a moment to experience what’s around you, you can see for miles in any direction.

Dean pulls the Impala to a stop in a layby. He squeezes Cas’s knee.

“Come on, Sunshine.”

Cas cocks his head like a curious puppy.

Dean points out the windshield, wondering why Cas hasn’t been the one to point out the perfection of this sunset. The sky is all reds, oranges, pinks, and purples. It is exactly the thing his boyfriend would comment on, perhaps wax lyrical about some other scene in the angel’s long existence.

“We’re gonna take a break.”

“I thought you wanted to get back to the Bunker tonight?”

Dean slides out of the bench seat.

“Still can. It’s not like I haven’t driven through the night before. Besides, I’ll be fresher for that drive if I stop for a while—you know all those safety messages about not driving tired?”

Cas’s lips twitch as if he’s trying not to laugh at Dean’s bullshit.

Dean doesn’t rise to the bait. Instead, he wordlessly pulls two beers from the green cooler on Baby’s backseat. He knocks the caps off before holding one out to Cas, who’s still sitting in the car.

“What you doing, man? You gotta get your feathery ass out the car to get the best seat in the house.”

Cas opens the door, his face bearing its trademark bemused expression.

“Dean, nothing is blocking my view of the horizon. I could see it perfectly well from where I was. I don’t understand—”

“You have to be kidding me, right?”

Dean climbs onto Baby’s hood, then leans back on an elbow.

Cas joins him, snuggling as close as he can when they’re both dressed in heavy coats and sweaters.

Dean wraps the arm holding his beer around Cas’s shoulder.

Cas takes a long pull from his beer.

“You were correct, Dean. This is better. In the car, although I could see the beauty of the sky, I was unable to be this close to you.”

Dean drops a kiss on the side of Cas’s face.

“Told you,” Dean says, then pulls his arm back and smirks around the neck of his beer bottle.

“You did. I concede, Dean, that the enchantment of such a magnificent sunset is infinitely better sitting on the hood of a car, drinking beer, and cuddling the one you love.”

Dean couldn’t agree more.
