Work Text:

Fulgur and Uki have been going out for a while now, and they’ve been talking about wanting to get a place of their own. There have been times when Fulgur looked troubled about something whenever they discussed, but Fulgur reassures Uki nothing’s wrong, he’s just had an off day. Uki still had the worry in the back of his mind, but decided not to push it.

With the money they’ve slowly been saving up, they’re finally able to get a one story apartment. Nothing fancy, but simple. They both took time off from their workplaces to move their things from their respective homes to the conjoined new one.

“Fucking finally!” Uki shouted in tiredness. “Time for a well earned nap.”

Fulgur nods with a tired smile. “You go on ahead, I’ll double check that we have everything. I’ll join after, okay?” He gives his lover a kiss on the forehead.

Uki would normally put up a better fight to get Fulgur to take a nap with him, but Fulgur’s usually stubborn about these things, so he lets him, trusting his word. Uki plants a kiss on his heart, letting Fulgur go to let himself go rest.

Some time passes after that, and everything appears to be going well. Except for one small issue. Fulgur and Uki have been sleeping separately, Uki going to the bed and Fulgur to the couch. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with couples sleeping in separate beds or spaces. They both slept together before whenever they make love, but Uki can’t help but feel there’s something off.

Whenever Uki’s left alone with his thoughts, he jumps to some of the worst conclusions. Like Fulgur not loving him anymore, Fulgur cheating on him, Uki not being good enough for Fulgur. Even though Fulgur reassures him none of those reasons are the case, Uki can’t help but have these thoughts continuously swirl around in his mind.

Uki’s determined today to find out why Fulgur’s been acting weird.

They finished eating dinner and they’re currently washing the dishes. Uki washing and Fulgur drying. Washing dishes is supposed to be therapeutic for Uki, but it only raises his nerves the closer they get to finishing. Uki turns the water off once they’re done and dries his hands.

“Hey, Fuufuu-chan?” Uki hesitantly calls out.

“What’s up, Ukiki?” Fulgur responds with a gentle smile.

Uki’s heart swells at the nickname, but has to be mentally prepared for this conversation. “Is… Is something wrong with me?”

“What…?” Fulgur turns to him with a concerned expression. “No, absolutely not, Starlight. What brought this up?”

Uki fidgets with his hands and looks down. “It’s just that… Well, you don’t sleep with me. Even though we’ve been living here for a while now. And no I don’t mean that , I mean being physically by my side while we sleep in the same bed. The couch can’t be that comfortable, Fuu-chan.”

Fulgur takes in this confession and sighs. “Uki… Look at me?” He hesitantly brings his hand to Uki’s face, and Uki flinches a little, but allows himself to lean into the touch. Uki looks at Fulgur, his eyes laced with sadness, confusion, fear, and a twinge of acceptance. “It’s not what you think, I promise you—“

“Then what is it?” Uki’s voice is trembling, prepared for one of the worst answers in his mind.

Fulgur takes his hand away from Uki’s cheek and looks away from him, feeling ashamed. “I have insomnia, and have had it for quite some time…” Fulgur doesn’t dare look at Uki’s face. “Tossing and turning many times, worrying about waking you up if I were to fall asleep after we have sex so I stay awake, my mind swimming in an endless sea of thoughts…”

“…how long, exactly?”

“Before we met.”

“You fucking bitch.”

Uki slaps Fulgur’s chest, taking Fulgur by surprise. He finally looks at Uki, and sees tears rolling down his cheeks. Fulgur immediately goes to wipe them away, and instantly after is pulled into a hug by the psychic.

“You dumbass, that’s all it was?” Uki asked with a wavered chuckle. “And here I thought it was something completely different, Jesus Christ. Why didn’t you tell me sooner, babe?”

“I-I didn’t think you’d want to be with or sleep with someone that has insomnia, someone that could ruin your beauty sleep,” Fulgur admits shyly.

“You’re lucky I love you, you dumb bitch.” They laugh a little together, mostly to release some of the tension that had been kept inside them both. “This is why I’m here. To help you with whatever you need, and vice versa. Don’t scare me like that ever again…”

“I’m sorry, love.”

Uki looks up at Fulgur and gives him a quick peck before leading him to their bedroom. Uki pulls the sheets off before getting on the bed, holding his arms out for Fulgur to fall into. Fulgur proceeds to lay on the bed and on top of Uki’s chest, with one ear listening to his heartbeat. Uki pulls the sheets over them both.

It’s a little early to retire to bed, since it’s currently sunset, but Uki figured this can be an early start for Fulgur to relax. With Uki’s manicured nails, he lightly scratches Fulgur’s back, making sure to avoid his exposed cybernetic spine with slightly scarred skin right by its side. Fulgur shivers under his touch and exhales deeply, finally allowing himself to be under Uki’s care.

“I’m sorry in advance,” Fulgur mumbles tiredly.

“Shhh… Leave it to me, baby~” Uki reassures in a hushed voice. He feels Fulgur nod before continuing.

Uki rubs his hand against Fulgur’s back, feigning a light massage while weaving his fingers through his hair, softly brushing it. He noticed Fulgur take deeper breaths, so he continues doing the two things simultaneously. He places a kiss on the top of Fulgur’s head, silently wishing him a good sleep.

A few hours pass and Uki fell asleep at some point, assuming Fulgur was finally able to sleep as well. Unfortunately, the cyborg was moving around a bit in his sleep, waking up himself and Uki in the process.

“Fuufuu…?” Uki mumbles while rubbing his eye. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, it’s just, uh… You know what, maybe I should—“

“No.” Uki holds him a little tighter, making Fulgur sigh in defeat. “Are you comfortable in this position, though?” He feels his lover nod against his clothed chest. “Okay. Then…lemme try something, okay?”

“…trust you…” Fulgur felt bad for waking him up, but knew better now than to debate with him on this matter.

Uki lightly scratches Fulgur’s back and takes a deep breath, preparing to sing.

“The day is night

Makkura na sekai

But nothing’s scary here it’s just the way I like

The darkness in my soul, the darkness in my eyes

I turn it into energy…”

Uki faintly hears Fulgur begin to snore, so as a safe precaution, he keeps going.

“I’m stuck in the abyss, stuck in the abyss

Like a never ending pit, a never ending pit

Kachi wo ubaitore, ubaitore

Cuz I’m stuck in the abyss

Stuck in the abyss

I’m stuck but I’m still headin for the light I’ll never fold

And now I feel invincible and take over the world

I’m stuck in the abyss

I’m stuck in the abyss

I’m stuck in here”

Uki hears Fulgur snore a little louder than before, bringing a relieved smile to his face. With something managing to work for once, Uki fell asleep immediately after.

And that was one of the best nights Fulgur had slept in a very long time.
