Work Text:
The words spiralled around and around in Caitlyn’s mind, again and again.
“Oil and water. That’s all there is.”
Of course she’d only come up with the perfect counterargument to try and get Vi to stay even a few minutes longer…much later after Vi had left.
It was silly really, pathetic even, that Caitlyn even wanted Vi to stay – after all… Vi certainly wasn’t the only woman in Zaun. Or Piltover, for that matter.
And yet… and yet. Caitlyn had to admit she’d found Vi fascinating even from the very first moment – back turned, on edge, already pre-empting the first strike. That Vi. But this Vi, the one that walked away?
Caitlyn felt… not blindsided. Not even betrayed, because how could you betray something that clearly wasn’t ever there? Honestly, Caitlyn didn’t really know how she felt. Just that she felt. Also that she missed Vi. Already.
Exhaling, Caitlyn ran her fingers through her hair, eyes flickering back and forth – looking, but not really seeing. Didn’t Vi – Violet – know? Was it all in her head, the looks they shared? Was that just something Vi did with everyone? Did I imagine it? Am I just…lonely and desperate enough to misread everything? No. No. Shaking her head slightly, no. Caitlyn knew, really… well. You don’t just… do that with anyone.
Fuck, was that even the first time Vi had ever been in Piltover proper, the city?
The more the thoughts grew, swirling around in the dark haired woman’s head viciously, the more desolate she felt. The more pained she felt. And so, Caitlyn decided what better way to try and cleanse herself of it all than to take a shower.
It didn’t work. Not really. Caitlyn knew it wouldn’t, but it was worth a shot. Better than trying to explain to her parents that she was this upset over someone from the Undercity, of all places. The water cleaned her body, of course, but… it didn’t clear her mind. At least her tears and unspoken cries were swallowed by the water, and the running shower noise respectively.
What a fool. How could I be so blind?
She’d act like nothing ever happened. Yes. That could work! Caitlyn would go back to attempting to work alongside the Enforcers – sidelong glances be damned – and… and… and then what? Go back into the shadows, the dimly lit hellscape that the Undercity felt like? Hope that one day she wouldn’t have to detain Vi – or worse?
Could they ever even try to avoid one another?
When Vi is so deeply connected to the heart of the current thorn in Cait’s side? Why did she have to be Jinx’s sister? Why did Jinx have to fucking be Silco’s daughter? Biting her lip, Cait almost sobbed again. Fuck.
Slowly, some of the pain receded. Not by much, but…enough. Enough to… alert Caitlyn that something wasn’t quite right. Had she left the bathroom door open? Was her towel always…there? Wait.
Was that a flash of blue?
