Chapter 1: Your Arrival

Chapter Text

Ever since you were old enough to have an imagination, you’ve developed a weird fascination with the ocean. Your parents had previously bought a vacation house that resided on the beach long before they had you, but your family only visited it in the summer. The beach house was located on one of those small islands you’d use a ferry to get to along with a quaint town filled with kind people. Of course, most were fishermen.

When it came to people, you’d only ever hang out with the elders on the island. They’d tell folk tales about creatures that lurked in the depths of the ocean, most stories revolving around sirens for they’re the most common folklore.

Being the imaginative kid you were, you’d spend your days either at the beach swimming around looking for sea creatures while other times you were at the local library. You’ve read each and every siren-related book you could get your tiny hands on. Most books came with warnings, explaining a siren's dangerous nature. What you couldn’t believe is that all of these books were found in the fiction section. Certainly they were real, right?

As you got older you eventually grew out of your ‘phase’, becoming rather preoccupied with more real matters such as your awkward teen years. You started to wave off every thought of sirens, they were only silly stories made up to scare children after all. As an adult, living in the city wasn’t all that bad either. You have a decent job that pays well and even have your own apartment. But each and every summer you’d continue returning to the beach house.

Placing your final items into your vehicle, you began your journey towards the beach house. It’s been a long year and you really needed to unwind. You’ve longed for clear skies and the sound of waves crashing against the shore all year. Your parents had backed out on going this time, explaining that their age brought too many complications, but gave you the ok to go by yourself. Sure it won’t be the same without them, but you were excited to get away from everyone.

Arriving on the island, you took in the familiar scenery with a small smile. As you began walking, you passed a few locals. Some recognized you and stopped for small talk filled with the usual 'you've grown so much’ or ‘it's good to see you again’. After what felt like hours, you reached your destination. The beach house looked as if you'd never left the island at all. Since It didn’t take long to unpack your things, you hurriedly changed into your swimsuit. you could go into town tomorrow to load up the pantry, but first you had to get a long awaited swim in.

you walked along the beach until you came upon a small cove. It was a special place to you as you’d spend a lot of time there each summer. No one ever went there, not even your own parents wanted you there. The rocks were sharp and could easily pierce the skin if you were to slip. Once you got inside you practically threw your things to the side and stepped into the water. you submerged yourself beneath the gentle waves and let the ocean surround you. You wished you could do this day after day.

After you swam around for a while, you decided to sit on a submerged rock and take a break when suddenly, you felt something slimy come in contact with your right leg. Letting out a surprised shriek, you quickly pulled yourself out of the water. you peered down at where you just were, looking for any signs of life.

A few minutes passed and you finally decided to give up on swimming for the rest of the day. As you approached the beach house, your head wandered back to the strange encounter. It was probably just some fish that was swimming way too close. you really need to stop overthinking things.

Unbeknownst to you, two figures crept out from the shadows of the cove. The brighter of the two turned to his companion with a questioning look. The darker one’s gaze narrowed and it gave a few clicks before turning around to go back into hiding, the other following suit.

Waking up you immediately stomped your way towards the kitchen. Opening the cabinets, it finally dawned on you that you never went to the market to stock up on food. Groaning a string of curses, you facepalmed yourself before heading back to your room. Maybe you could go out to the beach again before going to the store, but you might pass on swimming this time. Collecting a plastic bucket and tiny shovel, you grabbed a bin full of string.

You happily made your way towards the shore dismissing the sounds of your angry stomach. You walked along the water's edge picking up and examining seashells then either dropping them back down or plopping them into your bucket. Once you had a good amount, you decided to sit right outside the cove near its opening. Your mom had taught you when you were young how to make seashell bracelets, now it was a hobby for you. Too bad you couldn’t do it in the city unless you wanted to buy plastic seashells.

You began forming holes in each seashell where you’d pull the string through, letting your mind drift off. In the cove, a pair of blue eyes watched you from afar in curiosity and amazement. He zeroed in on your hands, watching you work your way around the object you held. He watched as you tied a knot on both ends of the string and slipped it onto your wrist. Seeing your face brighten at the sight of the finished product made him freeze.

You went to begin on another one when you felt the weight of eyes on you. Lifting your head you glanced around at your surroundings. Looking into the cove, you caught a glimpse of a decently big yellow fin diving into the water. You rarely ever see a yellow fish of that size, but you guessed it was just very well fed. Shrugging your shoulders you turned back to your unfinished bracelet to continue. You made about eight seashell bracelets before your gut decided to squeeze the life out of you.

“Alright alright, I'll eat” you mumble in frustration.

You stretched out your limbs before picking up all your items. As you began walking, a bracelet fell off your pile of things. Looking down at it you decided you weren’t about to risk dropping all your items just to pick it up. And with that you made your way back to the beach house to drop off your things.

When you were out of sight, a large yellow and orange tinted arm stretched out to yank the bracelet from the sand. The sun shaped siren crawled back into the cove’s water, examining the item. He delicately slipped his hand through the bracelet, copying what you did earlier. The siren let out a stream of happy clicks before swimming away to show off his new accessory.

You sank into your couch, examining the now full pantry that took up most of your afternoon. ‘If I wasn’t so picky, I’d surely would’ve saved time in the store’ you thought. You had eaten take out before going to the market so thankfully you didn’t have to cook until tomorrow.

You scrolled through your phone since you were too lazy to get up from the comfy cushion. Before you knew it the clock read 11pm. Usually you would stay up until 1-2am, but you were looking forward to swimming tomorrow. You want to be well rested so your limbs don’t give out on you while you swim–It’s happened before and you’d prefer not experiencing that again.

With that thought, you head towards your room, opening the window to allow a cool breeze in. You snuggled beneath your covers, playing maybe one or two more mobile games before actually succumbing to sleep.

A beautiful melody swirled around you, Pushing you to follow its sound. Each step closer you could hear the song get louder and louder. You felt the sensation of sand beneath your feet, smiling at the feeling. It wasn’t until you stubbed your toe on a rock that you fell face first into shallow salt water. You woke up spitting water and spewing curses. Great it got up your nose. Then you froze.

“What the hell am I doing outside?”

You frantically looked around for anyone responsible, but found the beach dead empty. You’ve had friends that would sleep walk, but you never thought you’d be doing the same. ‘If I didn’t wake up and kept going, I would’ve drowned’ the thought made your heart race. Stepping out the water fully, you looked down at your now wet pajamas and groaned. Now you had to dry off and change before you were able to go back to sleep. You huffed before stomping your way back to the beach house.

The yellow siren peeked his head above the water, watching you walk away with a dejected look. He really wanted to get a close up of you while you were fast asleep. He was gonna send you back afterwards, he really was. A blue siren silently approached the other siren with a disapproving look etched on his face.

“What did I say about interacting with human’s Sun?” he hissed.

“They haven’t seen me, I swear! Not all humans are going to be the same Moon.” Sun replied, placing his hands on his hips. Moon scoffed.

“And I’m guessing a human didn’t do this?” Moon said, moving the other siren's arm away before pointing at a red scar that stretched across Sun's side waist. This brought the brighter companion discomfort, making him pull away from Moon. Moon's face showed guilt for a split second before switching back to a scowl.

“I’m only trying to look out for you. Think about what I said before trying something stupid like that again.” And with that moon swam into the dark abyss, Sun joining only a few minutes later.

Once you got back into your room, a cold breeze passed, making you shiver. You walked towards your open window and shut it tight. You changed from your soaked clothes and happily crawled beneath your bed covers.
