Chapter Text

You didn’t mean to kill her. It wasn’t supposed to happen! You had thought it was a joke, a prank. Something like that couldn’t possibly exist…! And yet…. Trembling, you glanced at the black notebook lying facedown on your study desk.

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

How could you take something like that seriously? No one would, right? It shouldn’t have happened….

-24 hours earlier-

Yawning loudly, you entered the shoe lockers area and approached your shoe cupboard. Wrinkling your nose in disgust, you scowled at the several pieces of chewed gum stuck on the sides and bottom of the cupboard. You looked around, knowing full well the culprit wasn’t around. No one met your sharp glare, but instead pretended to mind their own business. You had a solid idea of the culprit’s identity. With a tired sigh, you exchanged your outdoor shoes for indoor ones (luckily there was no gum on or inside them) and used several tissues to clean out the cupboard. Afterwards, you made your way towards class where you could hear her laughing obnoxiously loud. Your blood boiled at the sound of it, but you shook your head and willed yourself to let it go. Entering the room, you’re immediately hit in the head by an empty soda can, droplets of soda splashing onto your face and uniform.

“Oops! That’s my bad. I mistook you for a trash can,” Himekawa Eri said.

Around her, students snickered. “Wow, that’s harsh, even for you, Hime-sama,” one student remarked.

“Then again, I totally get it, you know?” another student chimed in.

Tall and slim with smooth, unblemished porcelain skin and good looks that would make a top supermodel jealous, Himekawa Eri was the school’s idol. She was the daughter of the CEO of one of Japan’s largest and most successful corporations, hence why most students referred to her as Hime-sama.

“Did you mistake my shoe locker for a trash can, too?” you asked coolly, tossing the empty soda can in the small waste bin behind you.

Eri smirked, unfazed by your accusing question. “Hm? I have no idea what you’re talking about~”

“Right, of course you don’t,” you muttered.

You moved towards your desk found in the back by the window, ignoring the snickering and whispered comments. Setting your bag upon the desk, you turned your face away from your classmates and rested your cheek against your fist as you gazed outside. Dull, gray clouds hung heavily in the sky, ready to unleash their load any moment.

School life has always been difficult thanks to your Quirkless nature. You’ve learned to deal with the constant verbal abuse and gossip, though you had zero clue why Eri hated you so much or seemed so overly bothered by your existence, but the feeling was more than mutual.

You kept your gaze on the gradually darkening sky until the teacher entered the room and Eri, the class representative, ordered everyone to stand in greeting. As the teacher droned on about the day’s lesson, you allowed your gaze to wander outside where light rain hit against the windowpane.

It started raining, huh? you thought, fighting back a yawn from escaping.

It was weather like this that made you sleepy and wished you were tucked snugly in bed. It didn’t help that you had stayed up last night watching reruns of your favorite show. You were about to look away from the window lest the teacher caught you not paying attention when something outside caught your eye.

Huh? What’s that…?

A small, black, rectangular item dropped from the blanket of dark gray clouds and landed in some bushes in the schoolyard. Raising a curious eyebrow, you glanced around you and found no one else had witnessed the strange occurrence and made a note to check it out at the first opportunity.

The opportunity came at lunch while your classmates ate their meals and conversed with friends. You slipped out of the classroom and headed for the school courtyard. The rain had stopped, some rays of sunlight poking through the blanket of clouds.

Let’s see, I saw it fall around here, you thought, scanning the bushes.

Your eyes widened slightly upon discovering a black notebook caught facedown in the bush’s branches. Picking it up, you flipped it around and read the title: Death Note.

Weird title, you thought, opening the book. Writing was found inside: “‘The human whose name is written in this note shall die,’” you read aloud, bewildered. Oh, I get it. It must be a joke book. Someone has a sick sense of humor.

Still though, where did it come from? You had witnessed first hand the book falling from the sky. Glancing up, you found that more rays of light were shining through as the clouds gradually turned a lighter shade of gray. Shrugging, you decided to keep the book and retreated within the school. When school ended, you started for home when a sudden breeze blew beneath you, flipping up your school skirt for practically the whole student body to see your underwear.

“Wha—?!” you yelped, hurriedly snatching down your skirt. Your face burned with embarrassment as students around you laughed, cheered and whistled.

“Yikes! How unfortunate~” said a voice full of spite. Scowling, you whipped around to find Eri standing with several of her friends. Eri smiled innocently at you. “The wind sure is unpredictable. You ought to take better care—”

“You know using Quirks without permission isn’t allowed!” you snapped.

Eri’s eyes narrowed, though her smirk remained in place. “Huh? Are you accusing me of something? It was the wind. I may have the ability to manipulate air, but I would never do anything as tasteless as exposing a fellow student.”

Gritting your teeth, grip still tight on the fabric of your skirt, you yelled, “You’re so full of it! Why can’t you just leave me alone! I never did anything to you!”

“Well, that’s where you’re wrong,” Eri said, approaching you, her gray eyes taking on a sharp, steely gaze. “Everything about you irritates me.” Stopping in front of you, she leaned over and whispered. “Your very existence disturbs me. Why don’t you take a hint and just die already? You’ll be doing the world a favor.”

With one last snicker, Eri signaled to her friends to follow her as she shoved past you towards her waiting ride. You watched after her in dismay. Your existence disturbed her? So much so that she wanted you dead ? And to think she has the potential to get recommended for the best hero school in the country.

You took the train home, your mind numb as you blankly stared out the window. Just one more month… you only had to put up with the abuse for one more month and then you’ll never have to see Himekawa Eri again, or so you hoped, anyway. But then there was the possibility of her getting accepted into U.A. and receiving hero training. Her a hero? It was so funny, you almost laughed out loud right there on the train.

And not only that, but why were those without Quirks treated as less than? You were still a human being who desired to help others. But instead of encouraging and praising that desire, you’re mocked and bullied simply because you were born without powers.

Life truly is unfair. Why does someone as awful as Eri have such an amazing Quirk, whereas I…. Sighing, you shook your head, your eyes dropping to your bag where a corner of the black notebook you picked up earlier poked out.

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

Eyes widening, you shook your head vigorously. What the…? Surely I’m not thinking Eri deserves to die? Not only that but this book, there’s no way it’s real.

You still had several minutes until the train reached your destination. Taking out the book, you read the rest of the ‘rules.’ Imagine the ability to kill someone without leaving any evidence. You stared out the window, watching the passing scenery. If such a power existed, that person would practically be unstoppable. Just a name and a face was all one needed to erase another’s existence.

“Your very existence disturbs me. Why don’t you take a hint and just die already? You’ll be doing the world a favor,” Eri’s malicious voice echoed through your head.

You fished around in your bag for a pen and wrote: Himekawa Eri. Sticking out your tongue, you closed the book, stuffed it back in your bag and listened to music on your phone.

Eri was shopping for clothes at the mall with two of her friends. She was in the dressing room, trying on clothes while her friends sat outside the changing room.

“No, Eri, you didn’t!” Hitomi squealed when Eri relayed to her friends what she had told you. “If she actually does kill herself, wouldn’t you feel bad?”

“Hah? And why on earth would I?” Eri asked.

35

“Could you imagine if she wasn’t wearing any underwear?” Himiko snickered. “Such a shame.”

“Ew, you pervert,” Hitomi gagged, giggling.

“I did that dumb broad a favor with that trick. Now she’ll have guys interested in her for once,” Eri said, sneering. “Ooh, how’s this top?” She stepped out, wearing a sleeveless frilly, sky blue top.

25

“Don’t you already own that top?” Himiko asked.

“I don’t care much for the color. Oh, yeah! Any news on the U.A. recommendation?” Hitomi asked.

15

Eri returned inside and said, “Actually, I do have some news! I got in!”

“What?!”

“Congrats!”

5

“Was there any doubt? I still gotta do the stupid recommendation exam, though.”

“You’ll beat it, hands down,” Hitomi said proudly. “We definitely gotta celebrate!”

“Ooh, ooh! Let’s try that new cake shop that opened, Kawaii Cake!” Himiko suggested.

“I did hear some good reviews—” Hitomi started when a loud thud against the door of Eri’s changing room startled her. “Wah?! E-Eri?!”

“Hey, you okay?” Himiko asked, standing to her feet

0

“Au… augh….” Choked noises and gurgling rose from within the room, sending the pair into a panic.

“Eri, what’s happening?!” Hitomi demanded, banging on the door.

“Hey! Hey!” Himiko shouted to the store associates. “Something’s wrong with my friend!”

Hitomi dropped to the floor to peer through the gap and screamed.

Himekawa Eri sat half-naked slumped against the wall, dead.
