Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Hush now my baby, be still, love, don't cry

Sleep as you're rocked by the stream

Sleep and remember my last lullaby

So I'll be with you when you dream”

The lullaby flowed beautifully from the angel as they rocked the little abandoned child in their arms. It pained them to see what the pharaoh was doing. How could someone claim to be doing good when all they do is destroy and kill? How was this in the almighty's plan? Here pharaoh was killing every firstborn child he could get his hands on, and all the almighty had to say about it was-well…the almighty didn’t exactly talk to them anymore. Not that it mattered, the angel knew what they needed to do, put one foot in front of the other, and continue to do the right thing. No matter how painful, how scary, or how difficult the right thing is. The baby in their arms continued to cry and squirm, but that didn’t stop them from trying to escape the city before it was too late. Suddenly, their face became wet, but it wasn’t with sweat nor with rain- but their own tears.

It pained them to see so much bad happen in a place meant for good. But, even more so it pained them that they couldn’t save all the children. Why did it always come to drastic measures like this? What point was the almighty trying to prove exactly? The angel knew better than to judge and question Her decisions, but killing the innocent could never be apart of the great plan. They were supposed to be the good guys for heavens shake! Nervously, they glanced down at the child in their arms as they ran as far and fast as they possibly could. However fast they ran the sound of horses was never far behind. “Shhhhh,” they cooed searching for a place to hide “, it’ll be alright, it has to,” they whispered down to the baby. However, the last part was more reassurance for them than for the child.

Suddenly, they spotted it, the miracle they needed. Quickly glancing behind them they ran towards the river knowing it was their only chance. Practically shrinking behind a rock they hid until the soldiers passed right by the river, not suspecting a single thing. Shaky fingers ran gently over the child's head as they softly soothed them enough. Pain, regret, guilt, anger, but most importantly flashes of love ran through their entire body. Angels don’t have blood, but if they did theirs would be boiling. Oh, the unholy things they wanted to do to the pharaoh and his fake gods right now. But, now was not the time nor the place to think about them. Once they were sure the soldiers had passed they miracled up a small carrying basket, and gently set the child in it. Now, came the hard part, carefully they waded into the water and set the basket down not letting go just yet. “You are going to do wonderful things, prince of Egypt. I hope you remember me one day because I’ll never forget you.” a couple of tears slowly trickled down the angel's cheeks onto the little baby as they kissed their forehead. With a deep and careful breath, they let go of the basket, making sure it was set on the right course for the palace. Where, they would be taken care of by the princess, just like the almighty's plan said.

“River, oh, river, flow gently for me

Such precious cargo you bear

Do you know somewhere he can live free?

River, deliver him there”

The rest of the lullaby fell out of their mouth as they watched the basket drift away from their view. Some people were chosen to do great things by Her, and others-well others were just angels meant to help those for Her plan. Just another silly little angel.

“Goodbye, Moses.” They whispered out falling to their knees.

Just another silly little angel indeed.
