Work Text:

"Surprise!!!"

Yuu felt his heart stop as soon as he walked through the front door. His family stared at him expectantly, Mika holding a chocolate cake in his hands and his beloved friends holding on to what seemed like gifts. For him?

"Hey, Kid! Say something!"

Yuu turned his view to a slightly peeved Guren. He had what seemed to be a party hat on top of his messy, navy hair.

Yuu let out some incoherent mutters, everyone looked at each other with some worry.

"Yuu-chan?"

There was clear concern laced in the young man's voice. Yuu was busy looking around the living room. There were balloons that said '21st Birthday!'

His nose picked up on the sweet treats set on the table. While his eyes saw a banner that said 'Happy Birthday Yuu!'

"It's my birthday?"

Everyone's mouth went agape. Yuu hadn't realized he'd said that aloud!

"Of course, don't tell me you forgot, idiot?"

Mitsuba's face turned into a tomato. "We planned this out for a while now.. And you didn't even know it was your birthday?!" Yuu was just as confused as her, really.

"Well, that's alright. Happy Birthday Yuu!"

Yuu nodded towards Shinya. Still very confused. "I told them Yuu," Mika smiled gently. "I never forgot when you first told me."

Yuu's shoulders stiffened. "Yuu-san, I'm dying to try out the cake." Shinoa whined. "Help yourself.." Yuu walked over to the sofa to sit down, he felt his body shaking.

He could hear his family whisper amongst themselves.

"I'm going to go talk to him.."

"No! You could make things worse, Yoichi."

"Does Mistuba-san have a better idea?~"

"You know he can probably hear your annoying high pitched voice from here, right Shinoa?"

"Oh shut up, all of you!" Guren nodded towards where Yuu was sitting, and where Mika was also now sitting. The cake long forgotten on the table.

"Yuu-chan,I'm sorry if this was sudden and uncomfortable, I thought this would make you happy.."

"I-i am… I just never thought this would ever happen." Yuu started to silently choke on his cries. Mika wasted no time in wrapping his arm around the younger boy.

Mika understood. It had only been about a year since the war had ended. During most of their lives there was no point in celebrating a birthday. Or any holiday for that matter. But Mika remembered Yuu's birthday from when he told him during their time at the orphanage. He vowed his beloved would have a wonderful birthday, one day.

And today was that day.

"Don't you remember the promise I made you?" Mikaela tilted Yuu's chin up to look at him. His heart ached when he saw his beloved's face covered in tears.

"I vowed one day you'll have the best birthday ever, with your family," Yuu sniffed and nodded in understanding. "It's a shame the children from the orphanage can't be here but.."

Mika grabbed Yuu's warm hands, "Today is about you, and you can celebrate it with people you care about," Yuu rested his head on Mika's shoulder. " M-mika.. "

"Come on, don't you want some of that chocolate cake?" The brunette nodded, Mika planted a kiss atop of his fluffy hair. He couldn't help but chuckle at how messy it was. Some things never change.

Both boys stood up, hand in hand, walking over to the table.

"You better have saved some for Yuu-chan!"
