By the Rivers of Babylon

I saw a post asking writers to explore the relationship Ishtar alludes to between herself and Destruction--what it was like, how it ended--which prompted this drabble.

Work Text:

It was easier on the battlefield. He was open there, and honest. He took his pleasure unstintingly, and she hers.

The prayers came fast and desperate, let me earn glory, victory, honor. Let our foes know defeat. Let me live. She blessed the worthy and the unworthy, with triumph and despair, with life and death, with survival and destruction. For there is nothing so destructive as war.

He laughed, and he smiled as he laughed. That smile!

But she answered other prayers. Prayers born of love, and of desire. He did not smile then.

It was easier on the battlefield.
