Day 19 - Kids

Summary:

Chris Redfield never imagined he would ever reach the stage of a relationship where he would have kids. Not in this life.

Prompt: Kids

Day 19/31 of Promptober 2022

Work Text:

Chris didn’t expect his life to be like this whatsoever. As he was growing up and leading up to the events of the Mansion incident, he imagined himself settling down with a family in a suburban house. After every bioweapon outbreak, this idea gradually dwindled over the years. The only thing keeping the spark a light was his girlfriend, who was his colleague at S.T.A.R.S., Tyler Jones. Compared to him, that image of a white picket fence was never in her mind. Her mind was focused on surviving and trying to trudge through life.

Through the harsh times, the foundations of the BSAA, through every mission, the two stuck together like glue. Every loss. Every win. Every accomplishment was celebrated together. It eventually led to Chris getting down onto one knee and popping the all important question of marrying him. Their thoughts of their ideal life changed drastically over the years.

An unfortunate chain of events followed shortly after their marriage. Tyler had fallen pregnant and within three months, Chris was deemed AWOL. With her being sat on the side lines, it pained her. Luckily, she had their friends around to help her when need be. Piers Nivans, the lieutenant, had checked up on her whenever he had free time and updated her on the investigation. Claire, her sister-in-law, had helped her in the last trimester. Barry Burton, long time friend of the pair, came over during the first couple of months whilst Chris was AWOL in Edonia. This was to name a few of their friends.

When Chris did come back, it was a shock to everyone. Chris, even through the solemn aura, tried to make up for the months missed. He missed the small milestones that she had gone through in her pregnancy. In the upcoming days, Chris explained to her what had happened, between losing another team and the amnesia to losing Piers. He stayed by her side, witnessing her water breaking and panicking as he got her to the hospital.

Neither of them expected that they would have twins, two boys: Connor and Piers. Both named after the two people who were dear to their hearts. That spark that stubbornly refused to go out, which benefited him. It began to ignite more of a flame. He knew could imagine this in their line of work that he could have a family. After about three years, they welcomed their daughter, Sage, into the world.

That was his morning thoughts as he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. He was now 48 years, with three kids and his wife. The mission with the Hound Wolf Squad was somewhat successful. Ethan had sacrificed himself so his daughter could live. Mia hated the Redfields for what they did, their broken promise. The Winters woman was on the verge of hysteria. The two were staying at the BSAA headquarters, whilst Chris and Tyler had headed back to their base.

The Hound Wolf Squad had their own base. It became like a family home, since they couldn’t leave the kids in America since Claire was busy. They had the rookie watching over the kids, whilst making sure to cover them via tech. Nothing more than the standard beige room with no life, no matter how much they tried to make it their own.

Shaking his thoughts off, he carefully got out of bed stretching out slightly before making his way out of the bedroom. On his way out his grabbed a loose fitting shirt which he tiredly put on. Silence followed behind him, with the darkness clawing at his feet. The old soldier made his way towards the bedroom that his children shared. It was easier to manage them in one singular room, especially on missions.

“What if daddy finds out?” A hushed feminine voice ‘whispered’ from the other side of the door. Quietly, Chris opened the door, peering his head through. On the carpeted floor were his children surrounded by craft items. His daughter seemed to be holding a folded card, whilst the twins were passing a poorly wrapped box.

“He isn’t. Mom said he wouldn’t be awake until later. She said he needed rest.” Piers reassured his sister, finally placing the box on the ground, causing Connor to pout and pick the present up, “We just need to get someone to help us make food for them.” That seemed to cause Chris to raise an eyebrow. What was he missing here?

“No, we’re able to!” Connor raised his voice, earning a nudge from his brother. Sage seemed to be lost and confused about what was happening. Chris decided to make his presence known since he could see the boys starting to agitate the other. Pushing the door further, it caught the attention of the children. All three of them froze, looking up at the father who hadn’t spoken a word.

The boys immediately pointed their finger at the other with a “he did it!” On the other hand, his daughter waddled over, the card in hand and held it up to him, “’Appy Annivsey. (Happy Anniversary)” She smiled happily. The innocence of a 5-year-old never surprised him. He smiled softly, taking the card, and reading the poorly written note to both him and his wife. Whilst it was distinguishable, it did mean a lot to the both of them.

“Go back to bed! We want to surprise you!” Connor blurted out, causing Piers to nudge him again. The two sent glares to the other but their attention was drawn to Chris, who had let out a small chuckle. It was adorable hearing his eldest imitate his ‘captain’ authority at him, “How about we surprise your mother instead?” He negotiates with the kids. The two boys turn away to discuss. Meanwhile, Chris picked his daughter up, resting her on his hip.

“So long as you say that it was our idea.” Piers responds. Chris simply gave a nod before gesturing for the boys to lead the way to the kitchen. This is what he had imagined when he was younger – an amazing wife and kids. This dream only had a nightmarish twist… bioterrorism.
