One Piece: The Strawhats in Highschool!

Summary:

My ideas for a High School/Modern AU of the Strawhat Pirates and some other One Piece characters.

Chapter 1: Roles and Backgrounds

Notes:

I haven’t decided where exactly this modern universe of OP takes place, but it’ll likely be in a European or American setting since the original show uses the alphabet a lot. (Funny how I say that but proceed to write the school system similarly to Asian schools with traditional split gendered classes and three grade levels 💀💀). Also so that the characters’ hypothetical ethnicities stand out more I guess

I also don’t know how to interpret the Grand Line and New World in here since I have information on characters that show up in either and realistically wouldn’t make sense to be in the same setting, so if anyone has any ideas you can lmk ^^

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Devil Fruit User (& Cyborg) Alternatives
-Luffy is very flexible and has great reach.

-Robin can multitask, and has very good vision and hearing.

-Franky has a dimpled chin, big but realistically proportionate arms and hands, star tattoos, and wears shorts (underwear alone is not allowed!)

Backgrounds, School Status, and Relationships
Luffy & Usopp:
Usopp was rather infamous at school (middle and high) for his extravagant stories, creations, and… gossip. He had a way with words and knew a lot of big vocabulary, but made up too much nonsense which is why he doesn’t have an A in his language arts class.

At the start of the year, when Luffy was a new student to the school, everyone thought he was annoying but he eventually became the most liked student in his grade due to his exciting personality, simple mindset and care-free nature. Students who disliked him usually did it out of some sort of jealousy than actual hatred since he never really did anything wrong.

Usopp, who was in the same class, was one of the few students who didn’t mind Luffy’s energetic self and they quickly became friends and then best friends. Luffy would often see Usopp work on some kind of knick-knack during class, so when one day he found a strange object laying in the corner of a hallway, he recognized it to be Usopp’s craft and returned it to him, to which Usopp was surprised Luffy knew that it was his and he took pride in that fact. Usopp respects Luffy because Luffy respects him.

Zoro & Chopper:
Zoro transferred in the third year. Immediately, he gained a lot of attention due to his unusual appearance of having green hair (even if it was dyed it would’ve still been strange since it’s green of all colors) and being prominently muscular in comparison to most students. He moved schools often because of stupid fights and drama (where most weren’t his fault at all, but he didn’t want to be involved anymore). He started the kendo/martial arts club.

At the start, Chopper felt very awkward and wary of the other students at school. He had never been in that kind of environment before since for his whole life he was homeschooled and mainly focused on studying medical science and such. Chopper would go to see Kureha (the school nurse) during breaks and lunch because he didn’t want to be around other students. He’s often asked to help injured students when she’s absent.

Zoro didn’t get into as many fights as he did in his previous schools, but he still ends up getting dragged to them and wounds up bruised. It still happens every so and then, so he’d gotten familiar with Chopper every time he was sent to the nurse’s since Chopper was always there.

Sanji & Nami:
Sanji and Nami went to the same middle school, and they were acquaintances (not quite friends back then). They went to different high schools, but then Sanji transferred in his second year to Nami’s school, to which he wasn’t aware of that fact (that Nami went there).

Nami became popular at school due to her looks and figure, to which other girls would admire her and boys would swoon over her. Nami and Vivi were desk mates and they quickly became friends. Nami was hoping she’d have an opportunity to study weather science in highschool, but it seems she’ll have to wait until university.

Sanji didn’t have much of an impression at the start aside from some of the boys in his classes viewing him as the typical blond white guy. Eventually his charm made his way through and somehow he became popular among the guys? He reasons that it’s because of his ball kicking skills— Once while he was eating lunch outside a football (soccer ball) came flying right at his face, but he managed to swiftly lift his leg up to his head and kick the ball a good mile away, all while still sitting on the bench (imagine that lmao). The football players who came to apologize and the few students who were around and witnessed the scene were all shocked at the sudden demonstration of impressive flexibility from “your seemingly average white guy.”

Though Sanji was popular with the men, he was also very popular among the women. With his charming demeanor, looks, and passion towards women, he won the hearts of many female students. Eventually the crowd led him to finding Nami at the school which surprised him and he immediately went rushing to her, and from then on they became friends (of course with more things happening but I think I wrote enough for them haha). Both Sanji and Nami are part of the cooking club. The rest of the student Strawhats would often come by to steal food.

Robin, Franky & Brook:
The school’s classes are split based on gender, so on one side the school, classes are all boys and male teachers and the other has all girls and female teachers. Robin is a second year history teacher and teaches Nami’s class. She has a free period so she often ends up subbing classes in the boys classrooms. Robin was a fairly popular teacher among the students, as she was beautiful and mature but also kind, helpful, passionate about her job and subject, and relatively lenient as a good teacher should be. But all teachers have their flaws, and one of Robin’s is that she’d go on tangents about ancient manuscripts and the meaning of life and existence and everything, and students would have brain farts. She was also creepy sometimes.

Franky’s subjects of expertise didn’t really fit any of the classes in the school’s curriculum, but the school wanted to hire him anyway so they placed him as a substitute teacher and repairman. He was cool with it. The school was pretty understaffed anyway. The students enjoyed watching Franky fix things because it looked really impressive and happened in such a short amount of time that some would purposely break things for it (it’s weird).

Students were scared of Brook at first—he was very tall—but eventually warmed up to him after getting used to his personality. Brook could play any instrument and sing in any style with nearly all techniques; he has over 50 different types of instruments stored in the music room closet. He enjoyed teaching his students how to play and sing and seeing their faces light up in joy and appreciation for the art of music.

It wasn’t really known how Robin, Franky, and Brook became well-acquainted and then friends. They first introduced themselves along with all the other teachers and talked to each other often about their work and students. And then, at some point they started talking about other things such as themselves and complain about random things, and would invite each other to go out for drinks. Perhaps it was because they found that all three had an interest on the same specific students (totally not the Strawhat kids).

Notes:

For the other character meetings there isn’t much detail so I didn’t write about them, but I’ll include the vague ideas here instead:
-Luffy and Usopp met Sanji and Nami (and Vivi) at the cooking club. Luffy smelled the good food from a mile away and was floating and inhaling the scent like a Western cartoon character. Usopp just followed him.
-Zoro and Sanji have a class together, so naturally they met that way. As usual they fight all the time. Chopper met everyone from Zoro who met everyone from Sanji after walking into the cooking club when he was looking for the restroom.
-Robin is Nami’s teacher and had substituted all the young male Strawhat members’ classes. Franky substitutes any if not all classes. Luffy and the rest would often drop by the music room after school to chill out, so that’s how Brook meets them.
