Home Alone

Summary:

A young Sasuke is left home alone for the first time while his parents are away discussing a trade issue on behalf of the leaf and Itachi is on mission.

What could go wrong?

Notes:

I wrote this in like 3 hours at 7 in the morning with no sleep and when I woke up I didn’t remember like any of it.

But there was over 7,000 words and it seemed wasteful not to do something with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Character ages:
Sasuke: 7
Itachi: 13
Shisui: 15
Iruka: 17/18ish I don’t actually really know for sure

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Sasuke sat on the edge of his parents bed as he watched his mother anxiously run about the room, packing her bag. Her and his father were going on a business trip to the land of Rice Patties that he knew had something to do with Konoha head families being good negotiators but he wasn’t sure what. This was common and shouldn’t be a problem except Itachi was also away on a mission with Shisui leaving Sasuke home alone. Suffice to say his mother was less than happy at the prospect of leaving her youngest by himself.

“I don’t know about this Fugaku. We’ll be gone nearly two weeks!” She exclaimed, shoving some clothes roughly into her bag. Fugaku sighed from where he was leaning against the door, he already having finished packing hours ago. Sasuke would’ve just gone with them but the delegate they were going to see wasn’t fond of children.

“He’ll be fine, Mikoto. I’ve already arranged for members of the police force to check in on him daily.” He assured, clearly getting tired of having this conversation. Sasuke knew why, they had been having it since Mikoto found out about the trip two days ago. “Besides, Sasuke is perfectly capable of taking care of himself, isn’t that right?” Fugaku directed the last part at him looking at Sasuke expectantly. He eagerly nodded in reply, but it didn’t seem to convince Mikoto.

“He’s seven. He shouldn’t have to take care of himself.” She snapped and Sasuke had to refrain from interrupting. For the first time ever his father was actually trusting him to do something on his own and his mom was determined to get him to change his mind. He looked nervously between his parents as Fugaku sighed before crossing the room to stand beside his wife.

“He’ll have to at some time.” Fugaku pointed out, earning himself a glare from the woman. “I trust him, he’s an Uchiha, do you?” Sasuke felt his heart skip at the words. I trust him. His dad has never once said something like that before yet here he was saying it as though it were easy. It was Mikoto’s turn to sigh as she finally slumped in on herself.

“Of course I do, but that doesn’t mean I want him on his own.” Sasuke perked up at his mothers tone. She’s about to give in. She sighed again before looking up to come stand in front of him. She placed her hands on his shoulders, giving him a gentle smile. “Are you sure you’ll be alright by yourself? I don’t know when Itachi is coming home. You might end up alone until we get back.” She warned and Sasuke didn’t hesitate to nod his head. His father was placing trust in him, he wasn’t about to mess it up.

“I’ll be ok. I know to go to the police if anything happens.” She still seemed unsure but Fugaku smiled at him with something akin to pride.

“That’s my boy.” Sasuke felt his chest swell once more at the praise and fought hard to keep the happy blush from his cheeks. After all, it was rare he received praise from his father that wasn’t in some way compared to Itachi. “Let’s go Mikoto, we’re going to be late.” He urged as Sasuke felt the grip on his shoulders tighten just for a moment before she moved to wrap him in an embrace.

“Alright, fine.” She conceded, still hugging him tightly. “If anything happens, call Auntie Aimi, ok?” He nodded quickly in understanding as she pulled away to hold him at arm's length. She looked for all the world like she’d rather do anything aside from leave him to fend for himself. Sasuke didn’t falter and went as far to offer her a reassuring smile of his own.

“Mikoto.” Fugaku called again, tipping into impatience and Mikoto pulled away. She went to join her husband but not before planting a quick kiss against Sasuke’s head. He yelped and immediately tried to dodge but she had been faster.

“I love you, Sasuke.” Sasuke felt his face heat up in embarrassment as he rubbed his hands over where she had kissed him. She laughed lightly amused as Fugaku grabbed their bags to start leaving the house. “Be good and listen to your teachers while we’re gone. We’ll be back in no more than ten days, ok?” He nodded again, starting to find himself growing just as tired of the conversation as his dad.

“I love you too.” He mumbled looking away so she couldn’t see how red his face was. She smiled back at him before finally walking out after Fugaku.

“Goodbye, Sasuke! I’ll be back soon!” With that final call his parents left the building leaving Sasuke completely alone in a too big house.

Ok. You can do this. Sasuke coached himself as he slid down from off the bed. His parents were counting on him to be able to handle himself and he wasn’t going to let them down. He would prove to them he was every bit as responsible as Itachi. Itachi had been left to watch him plenty of times when he was much younger then Sasuke was now. If he can do it then so can I. He smiled satisfied to himself as he made his way to the kitchen.

Because of his mom, they had left late so it was already close to dinner time. Luckily for him Mikoto had pre-made him several meals in preparation so all he had to do was warm them up. It’s only ten days. I can do this. After dinner he would finish his homework and then get ready for bed. It wouldn’t do for him to be tired at school if he wanted to do well in class. He was determined to go about his normal schedule as if his parents had never left in the first place.

Everything will be fine.

Sasuke woke up early the next morning feeling something off.

He couldn’t quite place what it was as he got out of bed to begin getting dressed. There was a chill in the air that sent shivers down his back as he pulled a black long sleeve over his head. Fall must have come sooner than I thought. He wrote off as he made his way to the bathroom to brush his teeth. When he was done he went back to his room to make his bed only to pause.

He caught sight of the clock on his nightstand and saw it was already 7:45. School started at 8. It was at least a 15 minute walk.

“…”

He dropped the blanket in his hand and made a beeline for his discarded bag, carelessly shoving his homework into it as he did. How could I have slept in? I went to bed early. Sasuke thought as he rushed about the room. Which was true, he had gone to bed a full hour earlier than normal after he finished his history assignment. He had never slept in before so why would it happen now?

There wasn’t time to dwell on it. He needed to get to the academy before the bell rang and Iruka started roll call. He speed walked down the hall, because whether his mom was home or not he wasn’t about to run in the house, and paused in the kitchen. I should probably eat breakfast. He mused briefly before quickly dismissing the idea. He didn’t have time, besides he didn’t really feel all that hungry. He grabbed the bento he fortunately had the foresight to prepare the night before and rushed out the door only pausing to pull on his sandals.

Once he was outside he felt even more cold. He instantly regretted not grabbing a coat before he left. Rather than curse himself for his forgetfulness he broke out into a sprint towards school. A few of his older relatives called out greetings but he only spared them a small wave. I’ll probably get chewed out for that later. In his family news spread quickly and he had no doubt some meddling aunt would tell his parents if they felt he had been rude. Better to be scolded for that then being late. He knew better than most how much his father despised tardiness. He only hoped he’d actually make it in time.

As the academy came into view with only a few minutes to spare, Sasuke almost breathed a sigh of relief as he came through the door passing a few of his slower classmates. Shikamaru paused to look at him from where he was hanging up his coat that he hadn’t forgotten.

“You’re usually here earlier.” The Nara thought aloud and Sasuke responded with a proper glare.

“And you’re usually asleep. What’s your point?” He snapped back and Shikamaru raised his hands in surrender, stepping back.

“Chill. Just making an observation.” Sasuke bristled as he felt his eyes scan him. It made him uncomfortable the way it felt as though the other boy was looking at his very soul. Shikamaru, despite being lazy, had always been far too observant for his taste.

“Well don’t.” Sasuke was aware he was being shorter than he normally would have but he was willing to do anything to get him to stop analyzing him. Shikamaru shrugged before leaving to find his seat. Sasuke was quick to do the same when he saw Iruka making his way to the classroom.

“Good morning class,” Iruka greeted and they all responded with a diligent chorus of “Good morning Sensei.” He smiled pleasantly before opening his lesson plan. “Alright, time to take roll call.” Before he could so much as utter the first name, the door burst open loudly. They all turned towards the sound to see…

“I’m here!” Naruto cried victoriously, his clothes caked in dirt and twigs in his hair. What was he even doing? Sasuke thought equal parts appalled and curious. It was an impressive amount of filth for so early in the morning. Iruka sent the dirty child a warning look as he took in his state.

“You’re late is what you are.” He started and Naruto shrunk back just slightly. Iruka sighed at the reaction before motioning for Naruto to come in and shut the door which he did. “Why are you covered in dirt?” He asked tiredly and Sasuke felt a little badly for their clearly exhausted home room teacher. Naruto merely laughed nervously reaching up a hand to rub the back of his neck. It was a habit he did often when he was uncomfortable or hiding something.

“I was running to get here and I tripped over a cat and ended up falling down a hill.” Naruto explained poorly and Sasuke raised a brow. There aren’t even any hills in route to the academy. Honestly if he was going to go through the trouble to lie he might as well do it right. Iruka seemed to realize the same thing as he breathed a slow breath, reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose.

“Just…go take your seat alright? I’ll talk to you after class.” The blond boy groaned dramatically at that but did as told regardless. Unfortunately the only empty seat was next to Sasuke leaving him stuck sitting next to the rowdy boy. This was why Sasuke generally came to class early, that way he could get a seat at the back of the class in the corner. The only people that really sat next to him were Sakura, Ino, and occasionally Shino. Shino wasn’t that bad but the two girls could be annoying. But he’d gladly take any of them over the Uzumaki currently sending him dirty looks.

“Alright, today we’re going to be talking about The Second Great Ninja war and what led to its end.” Sasuke quickly tuned his deskmates' antics out to focus his attention on their teacher. He wasn’t going to miss something important over a petty rivalry that didn’t even actually exist.

Class went on without further problems until lunch where Sasuke ate the wrapped shake onigiri he packed the night before. He still wasn’t very hungry but he knew he needed to eat so that was what he did. He ended up only eating half before putting the rest away. This, unfortunately, didn’t go unnoticed by his teacher. It was the one setback at choosing to eat lunch inside rather than in the yard with the others, he was the only kid Iruka had to watch meaning he had his full attention.

“Are you already done, Sasuke-chan?” Iruka asked, staring at him from where he was grading papers. “You didn’t eat much.” Sasuke gave him a nod, neatly placing his box back into his bag.

“I’m not really hungry.” He excused and Iruka frowned at his answer as Sasuke fiddled with his hands. He wanted to get his attention off himself so he could go back to staring into space until the bell rang.

“Are you feeling ok?” Iruka pressed, concern evident. Sasuke was now faced with two choices. One: he told his teacher the truth and let him know he didn't feel too well, risking him calling his family, potentially causing his parents to find out and forcing them to come home, or Two…

“I’m fine Sensei, I just had a big breakfast.” Sasuke answered and he watched as Iruka furrowed his brows, not quite ready to accept the lie. He decided to forgo his pride to give him a reassuring smile. It was only when his teacher gave him a small smile back that Sasuke felt his shoulders relax.

“If you say so, if you start feeling sick just let me know, alright?” He nodded quickly and nearly sighed in relief when Iruka went back to his work. The bell rang a few minutes later and Sasuke only felt a small comfort knowing he had already made it half the day.

By the time class let out it had begun to rain and Sasuke was, of course, without an umbrella. He sighed deeply as he stood just beneath the academy awning on the steps. All of his classmates were already running to join their waiting parents. Well all his classmates aside from Naruto of course. The younger boy seemed to actually be enjoying himself as he ran through the rain kicking mud up as he did and jumping into puddles. Iruka yelled at him to stop from where he had been walking alongside him.

Hmm, Sasuke thought as he saw his Sensei reach down to grab Naruto’s hand. He must be taking him out for dinner again. It was no secret among their class that Iruka had a favorite and that that favorite was Naruto, no matter what he may try to tell you. Though none of them could understand why, it was clear to see the way Iruka felt about him. It had never really bothered Sasuke since he didn’t treat him any differently from the rest of them. If Naruto acted up in class, he would get detention just like anybody else. He just got a lot more sympathy and occasionally ramen afterwards. The wind suddenly blew, sending ice cold water into Sasuke's face and snapping him out of his thoughts.

He cursed quietly under his breath, wiping the water off on his sleeve before realizing it was pointless. I’m gonna be wet here in a minute anyway. He sighed before resigning himself to a brisk jog through the rain. His first time home alone was not off to a great start.

By the time Sasuke made it back to his house his clothes were completely soaked through and he was trembling from head to toe. He shook as he shut and locked the door behind him gently hanging his bag by the door. I’m never forgetting my jacket again. He silently vowed, taking his muddy shoes off by the door. It was then he noticed he was dripping water onto the ground and was making a small puddle at his feet. He couldn’t go through the house like this.

That determined, he decided to just strip his soaking wet clothes by the door to deal with later. Despite the fact they had been dripping icy water Sasuke found himself much colder when his skin was exposed to the air. He quickly walked down the hall wearing only his boxer shorts into the bathroom before turning on the bath. He made sure the water was actually hot before stripping what was left of his clothes and allowing the steaming water to warm his skin. He was still at an age where his mother didn’t particularly like leaving him unattended in the bath for fear of him drowning without her knowledge but he felt what she didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her. Besides he didn’t intend to take long, only wishing to warm up before he started on his homework for the night.

After about 15 minutes the water began to cool off and he finally stopped shaking enough to grab a towel and dry himself off. He wrapped the fluffy towel around his shoulders before walking back to his room and getting dressed. He changed into his favorite set of pajamas, a blue pair with a small white cat on the front that Itachi had gotten for him. Once dressed he went back to the entrance to collect his freezing wet clothes and threw them in the washing machine. He didn’t actually know how to use it so he just left them in there for the moment deciding to figure it out later.

Sasuke wiped the water off the ground and then went to the fridge to pull out a small container of curry and rice to quickly warm up with a pan for dinner. Unlike lunch he actually finished his food. After depositing his dish in the sink, he grabbed his bag from the hook and went to his room to sit at his desk. He managed to work on his homework for 2 hours before he started feeling a dull pain in his head. He tried to work through it for another 10 minutes before determining it was going nowhere and it’d be better to just try again in the morning. He was probably just tired from afternoon training earlier. He was sure he would feel better in the morning.

He did not feel better in the morning.

If anything Sasuke felt five times worse as the dull pain in his head was now more of a throb and there was general ache throughout his whole body. And it was still. So. Cold.

He looked over to check his clock and was happy to find it was only 7:15. He had plenty of time to get ready for school. Though at the moment it sounded easier said than done as he slowly forced himself out of bed. He shivered as his bare feet touched the cold floor and he stumbled over to his dresser to pull his warmest sweater over his head. Once he threw some pants on he quickly brushed his teeth before walking to the kitchen to pack his lunch.

Since he still had some left from yesterday, he just threw an extra apple in and called it good. He considered making himself breakfast since he actually had the time to, but decided against it when his stomach turned in protest. He must’ve eaten too much at dinner. That had to be it. He instead spent his spare time making his bed and finishing the few math problems he didn’t get to last night.

Once he was finished it was 7:37, and if he didn’t want a repeat of yesterday he should start walking now. Sasuke made sure to put his coat on before he walked out the door and started towards the academy. As he walked he started to feel nauseous and his hands began to shake as they had the night before. Maybe I shouldn’t have skipped breakfast…

He tried not to think about it as he pushed open the door to his classroom. There was still about 5 minutes until class started so the late comers weren’t in class yet. The late comers being Shikamaru, Kiba, and, of course, Naruto. Everyone else had already taken their seats and were patiently waiting for class to start. Sasuke was somewhat relieved when he saw an empty seat in the back corner next to Sakura. At least she’s better than Ino. Sakura may stare a lot but Ino talked practically nonstop. Before he could make his way over to her, Iruka placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

Sasuke jumped at the contact as he turned his neck to look at his teacher. I hadn’t even noticed him come over. Iruka frowned at him concerned, bending down to be more eye level. “Are you ok, Sasuke? You look pale.” He started and the worry was audible in his voice. Automatically Sasuke gave a nod only to regret it when it made his head spin. Iruka must’ve noticed his discomfort because the next thing he knew he was pressing a gentle hand against his forehead.

Sasuke subconsciously leaned into the cool touch only for it to leave a second later as Iruka pulled away with a gasp. “Sasuke, you’re burning up!” He exclaimed and now Sasuke frowned. That couldn't be right, he had been fine yesterday, hadn't he? Iruka stood back to his full height before walking back to his desk to pick up the phone. “Yes, front office? I need you to send someone over to watch my class for a minute. I have a sick student.” Sick? Sasuke felt his stomach drop at the words. He had barely been home alone for two days and he was already messing it up? Iruka hung up the phone with a quick “thank you” before walking back and promptly grabbing Sasuke's hand.

“C’mon Sasuke,” He urged softly and Sasuke wanted nothing more than for him to go back to his desk and leave him to deal with this himself in the back of the class. “I’ll be right back, Mizuki-Sensei will be coming to watch over the class while I’m gone so behave because he will tell me if you don’t.” Iruka warned the rest of his class who responded with scattered agreement. This seemed good enough for Iruka as he walked back into the hall, Sasuke in hand. This is not good. Sasuke thought panicked as Iruka walked them towards his office.

Usually his office was only used for parent teacher conferences but he could occasionally be found there looking over homework when he wasn’t in his classroom. The moment the door shut behind them Iruka released Sasuke’s hand to pick up the phone on his desk.

“Are your parents home? I need to call someone to pick you up.” That question was enough to set Sasuke back on full alert as he answered too quickly.

“No!” Iruka raised a questioning eyebrow, phone still raised by his ear. Crap. If he finds out they’re out of the village he’ll have to call Auntie Aimi. Sasuke absolutely hated staying with his aunt. It wasn't that she did anything specifically bad per say, but she seemed to be under the misconception that he was some kind of baby in constant need of attention. She was always pinching his cheeks and commenting on how ‘cute’ he was. It was exhausting, he complained about it to Itachi once and he only told him it was to be expected since Sasuke was the youngest in the family. That didn’t make it any less unbearable.

Shisui told him it was also probably the fact she never got to experience having a ‘normal’ child around the house since Shisui himself having had matured so quickly. Either way he needed to find an excuse and fast. He had never experienced being around his doting Aunt while sick and he didn’t intend to now.

“If your parents aren’t home, is there someone else I can call? You should be resting at home.” Sasuke’s mind flashed through different responses as he tried to think of something that would simultaneously explain why Iruka couldn’t call his parents and why he didn’t need to call someone else.

“Uh, no, I meant they’re not home right now. My mom will be home later.” He lied and Iruka didn’t change his stance.

“Ok, who can I call that can come get you right now?” Well there went that strategy. Sasuke decided to go for plan B.

“I can just walk home by myself. My mom should be back by the time I get there.” If he could get Iruka to let him go home, he could sleep this off before his family found out. Because as he previously stated, the Uchiha were gossips and all it would take is one cousin seeing him come home early before they all knew. Sasuke’s hopes were crushed when Iruka immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not. You clearly have a fever, I can’t in good conscience let you walk home like that.” Why did I have to get the good teacher? Sasuke thought bitterly, I bet Mizuki-Sensei would let me walk home. He had an older cousin who was in his class a few years ago, apparently he was much more lax about everything other than physical training.

“But I don’t have anyone to walk with me.” Sasuke argued, crossing his arms over his chest both in an act of defiance and to make himself warmer. “My house isn’t far, besides I walked myself here.” Iruka still didn’t look happy but he did set the phone back on the receiver much to his relief.

“Alright, fine.” Sasuke let loose a breath now that he knew his family wouldn’t be called but it was immediately taken back in at Iruka’s next words. “I’ll walk you home and we can wait for your mom together.” What.

“What?” Iruka smiled kindly at him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. Or at least what was supposed to be reassuring, to Sasuke it was anything but.

“I told you I’m not gonna let you walk home.” Iruka repeated and his voice took on a familiar No nonsense tone. “But I’d feel bad making you wait at the school while you’re sick until we can get a hold of your parents.” He continued in a lighter tone but it did nothing to alleviate the tightness forming in Sasuke’s stomach. “Mizuki has instructions to watch my class until I get back. Since you live so close I’m sure he’ll understand if I escort you home.” He extended his hand expectantly towards him and Sasuke had no choice but to take it and accept the consequences of his own actions.

They walked hand in hand all the way through the compound and Sasuke was sure more than a few Uchiha officers had seen him. He had no doubt his aunt would be called by lunch. What if she tries to call mom and dad? And then their business trip is ruined because I couldn’t do what I was asked?

Sasuke felt nauseous again but this time it was purely anxiety as his house came into view. Iruka seemed perfectly ignorant of his nerves as he reached up to knock on the door with no hesitation.

…Nothing.

Of course there’s no answer. Sasuke mentally berated himself as he subconsciously tightened his grip on his teacher's hand. There’s no one there.

Iruka gave his hand a comforting squeeze as he knocked again. “I’m sure she’s coming.” He assured him and Sasuke didn’t have the strength to tell him that wasn’t possible. Then, to both their surprise, the door suddenly swung open with no warning. Iruka instinctively pulled Sasuke back to stand behind him as he stepped back.

“…Sasuke-chan?”

“Shisui-nii?”

The two Uchiha blinked at each other, both equally confused by the other's presence until Iruka awkwardly cleared his throat to get their attention. “Uh, excuse me, I’m looking for Uchiha Mikoto? I’m Sasuke’s teacher, Umino Iruka.” He introduced and Shisui snapped out of his shock to properly address him.

“Oh, hi. I’m Sasuke’s older cousin. Why’re you bringing him home?” At the surprise of seeing his cousin in his house, Sasuke had almost forgotten about his panic that brought him to telling a bold-faced lie to his Sensei. He was spared from answering as a new voice called through the house.

“Did you say Sasuke was home?”

No. No way. There was no way that voice was who he thought it was. Surely the world didn’t hate him that much, right?

Apparently it did because Uchiha Itachi abruptly pulled the door open the rest of the way to stand beside his cousin, staring questionly at the pair. Iruka seemed just as unsure of what to do as he tucked Sasuke closer to himself. Why is he worried about them? Shisui already identified himself as his cousin. Sasuke then noticed his hands had started shaking again and resisted the urge to face palm. Maybe because you’re shaking like you’re terrified?

Itachi’s eyes were quick to land on Sasuke's and he immediately stepped forward in concern, bending down to see him better. Iruka moved to block his path which was honestly a very brave move on his part. There was few brave -or more accurately stupid- enough to try and keep Itachi from his little brother.

“I’m sorry but I’m looking for Uchiha Mikoto, is she here? If not we’ll be on our way.” Rather than get upset as Sasuke feared he might have, Itachi merely straightened back up to offer him a polite smile.

“I’m afraid she’s not home at the moment, but I am Sasuke’s older brother as well as emergency guardian. Is there a reason you’re walking him home early?” Iruka relaxed marginally at the information and Sasuke almost wished he would’ve kept shielding him. In his stress over upsetting his parents he had forgotten the one thing worse than a disappointed father.

A worried Itachi.

“Oh, I see! Well actually Sasuke’s running a bit of a fever. I think he caught a cold from the rain yesterday. I noticed he hadn’t been wearing a coat.” Well he didn’t need to know that part. Sasuke thought already annoyed with the obsessive mother henning he knew was coming. He hadn’t even realized anyone noticed he had forgotten his coat. “I was gonna call his mother to come and get him, but he told me she wouldn’t be home till later.” Iruka explained and Sasuke watched as his older brother's face pinched into a thoughtful expression. When Itachi didn’t immediately answer, Shisui was quick to take over.

“Well thank you very much for seeing our little Sasuke home safe.” Shisui said while he reached over to pull Sasuke more inside the house to be in between him and Itachi. Sasuke scowled and batted at the hand that ruffled his hair but it did little to stop him. “But I think we can handle it from here. Is there any work he needs to have with him or…?” He trailed off and Iruka shook his head with a pleasant smile.

“No, no. Sasuke is free to take as much time as he needs to rest. My students' health comes first.” Itachi seemed to tune back into the conversation as he gave Iruka a genuinely grateful smile.

“Thank you for taking such good care of my brother. Konoha’s youth is lucky to have you.” The young teacher went bright red in the face as he reached a hand up to nervously rub at his neck. Almost like a certain blond I know… Sasuke mused, momentarily distracted by the gesture.

“I-It’s my pleasure,” Iruka stuttered out before quickly deciding to give a small bow as he took a step off their porch. “Anyway I have to get back to the academy. Get well Sasuke-chan.” With one last wave towards the youngest, Iruka began a brisk walk out of the Uchiha district leaving Sasuke alone to his demise. As his figure disappeared from view Sasuke was ushered completely inside before the door was securely shut behind them.

“Where’s mother?” Itachi demanded the moment Shisui had locked the door. Sasuke glared up at him and willed the sneeze that fought to come out of him back down.

“Her and dad left on some business trip in the land of Rice Patties.” Sasuke huffed and roughly tried to shove Shisui’s hands off. It didn’t work. Itachi frowned at the information, pressing a hand against his forehead.

“That’s not for another week. Why would they leave early?” Sasuke gave a lazy shrug, content to soak up the cool feeling of his brother's hand. It felt nice against his still aching head. Shisui then clicked his tongue as he moved to undo his coat. Like a fiend.

“Figures they would change the plan last minute. I bet you that Lord sent another complaint about the stupid trade treaty and Lord Third moved the meeting up.” Shisui ranted as he manhandled Sasuke out of the heavy coat and moved to hang it up. Sasuke attempted to fight him off and snatch it back but his hands were grabbed by Itachi before he could.

“Enough Shisui. That doesn’t matter right now. For now we should focus on Sasuke.” Sasuke let out a whine as he tried to tug his hands free. He was much colder without his jacket. He didn’t want to deal with Itachi’s fussing right now.

Itachi had always been extremely overprotective of his baby brother, this trait only got worse when it concerned his health. He just wanted to go lay down and go to sleep, preferably buried under all the blankets he could find. Itachi seemed to mistake his sound of despair for distress and was quick to comfort him, picking him up and running a hand through his hair. “Shisui, will you go run him a bath please? I’m going to see if I can find some cold medicine.” Shisui nodded before promptly leaving to do as instructed. Sasuke just whined again before burying his face in the crook of his brother's neck.

Itachi only shushed him, propping him on his hip as he walked towards the kitchen. He listened as Itachi opened various drawers, setting something on the counter before he felt him start to put him down. Instantly Sasuke latched on tighter as Itachi was currently his best source of warmth.

“I’m just setting you on the counter, Sasuke. You need to take something to help with the fever.” Sasuke shook his head causing Itachi to sigh as he lightly pinched his wrists to get him to let go. With Sasuke seated on the edge of the counter he could now see the vile looking syrup he had laid out next to him.

“No.” Sasuke refused up front and Itachi gave him a look of warning. Sasuke wasn’t sure if it was the high fever or the general rebellion that made him bold enough not to back down.

“This is the best medicine we have. You’re taking it.” Itachi’s voice, unlike Sasuke's, was completely calm and even, which almost made it more intimidating. Sasuke continued to sit unwillingly as Itachi carefully poured out some of the foul red looking liquid. The disgusting smell hit his nose now that it was out of its bottled prison. Sasuke leaned away only for his back to hit the cupboard. Itachi let out another sigh but this one was distinctly more agitated, a state Sasuke learned was to be avoided at all costs. “This will go faster if you cooperate. You’re taking it either way, now do I have to make you or will you be so kind as to do it yourself?” Itachi stated sternly and Sasuke felt his eyes water.

He was tired and cold. And tired. All he had wanted was to prove he could take care of himself just as well as Itachi could and he couldn’t even do that. He felt a hand come up to brush at his cheek where a stray tear had slipped free. “Hey,” Itachi spoke softly, much more sympathetic than he had been a moment before and Sasuke just sniffled in response. Before it could be forced upon him Sasuke quickly leaned forward and swallowed the nasty vaguely cherry flavored medicine. He nearly gagged as the taste hit the back of his throat and Itachi’s hands gently moved to rub his back as he coughed. He full body shivered again and helplessly reached towards Itachi. If he was gonna be here anyway he may as well be useful.

Itachi obediently scooped him up, bouncing him up a bit as he did. “What’s wrong?” He asked softly as his mouth was right next to Sasuke’s ear. Sasuke attempted to avoid conversation by shoving his face into his shoulder but Itachi just bounced him again expectantly. “I know this isn’t just about the medicine. What’s wrong?” He repeated and Sasuke felt as more tears soaked into his brother's shirt fabric.

“I was supposed to take care of it.” He mumbled pathetically, his words muffled by where his face was buried.

“Take care of what?” Itachi pressed and Sasuke shook his head against him. Shisui then came back into the room lightly tapping Itachi on the shoulder that didn’t have Sasuke’s face currently pressed into it.

“Baths ready, he ok?” Shisui asked, his own concern evident in his tone. Sasuke felt Itachi give a nod as he moved to walk down the hall.

“I think he’s just tired.” Shisui nodded in acceptance and gently ran a hand through Sasuke’s hair and he didn’t have the energy to try and slap it away. He definitely didn’t find it nice. Itachi made his way to the bathroom and carefully set Sasuke on his feet by the tub. “Do you want help?” Itachi checked as Sasuke diligently started taking off his sweater. He was quick to shake his head, a light blush rising to his face. Itachi didn’t look like he wanted to leave but he nodded anyway. “Alright, but I’m gonna leave the door open ok? I’ll just be in the kitchen if you need me.” Sasuke pouted at the coddling as Itachi hovered by the doorway, Shisui leaning over his shoulder.

“M’ fine. I’m not a baby.” He huffed and Itachi’s face relaxed slightly amused.

“I know.” He didn’t sound particularly patronizing but Sasuke still felt he didn’t mean it. “Call if you need anything.” Sasuke nodded if only to get him to leave. He complied, sending him one last look as he did. Once he was alone Sasuke quickly undressed and was more than happy to get in the steaming bath. It wasn’t as hot as the one he’d taken the night before, probably because his family thought he always made the water too hot and was gonna get burned. He liked his baths as hot as possible. Shisui told him it was the pyromaniac Uchiha side of him, whatever that meant.

He washed himself quickly knowing if he took too long one of them would come back to check on him which was the last thing he wanted. He may have messed up his original plan of following his normal routine but he was still determined to try and handle this by himself as much as possible. If he was lucky he’d be better before his parents came back. Maybe he could even convince Itachi and Shisui not to say anything.

“You doing ok in there squirt?” Sasuke heard Shisui call down the hall and he sighed quietly as he finished rinsing out his hair.

“Yes. I’m getting out now.” He called back much softer but he still heard Shisui hum back at him. He pulled the plug on the drain and grabbed a towel to dry himself off. He walked out of the bathroom to his room and he could hear Itachi making something in the kitchen. He put his pajamas back on even though it was still fairly early in the morning. He didn’t see a point in getting dressed again. Now clean, he slowly made his way for the kitchen where Itachi was stirring a large pot of something that actually smelled pleasant. Though he still didn’t really feel up to eating.

Then with no warning whatsoever, Shisui came up behind him and abruptly plucked Sasuke off the ground. Sasuke yelped and lightly punched his chest in retribution but Shisui only laughed. It was then Sasuke remembered one very important detail. “Why are you two even here? I thought you had a mission.” Sasuke asked and Shisui’s smile faltered slightly at the question as Itachi paused what he was doing to look over at him calmly.

“The mission finished faster than we predicted. Shisui didn’t want to go home so he just came with me.” Shisui made a small noise of protest but Sasuke accepted the explanation. It’s not as if Shisui crashing at their house was particularly unheard of. His mother once joked he spent more time with them than his own family. “Are you hungry? I made you tomato soup.” It was a trick and Sasuke knew it. Tomatoes were his favorite and Itachi made the best soup. He was purposely making a dish he knew Sasuke wouldn’t refuse.

Despite realizing this Sasuke still nodded even if he did feel sick. Itachi smiled at his agreement and didn’t hesitate to scoop some of the soup into a small bowl before setting it on the table. Sasuke tried to slip from his cousin's hands so he could eat but Shisui just sat down with him in his lap. “I can sit by myself!” Sasuke all but hissed as he pushed against his older cousin. Shisui clicked his tongue as he wagged a finger in his face.

“Nonsense, Sasuke-chan. I haven’t seen you in nearly a week. I deserve this. Besides, this is my right as your favorite cousin.” The younger boy glared up at the smug smile on his face. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Sasuke thought annoyed but reached for his spoon nonetheless when Itachi nudged the bowl closer to him as he took his own seat.

“Don’t tease him Shisui, he’s not feeling well.” Itachi scolded and now it was Shisui who pouted over at him.

“Aw, you’re no fun Itachi-chan.” Sasuke carefully took a bite of his soup and nearly melted when the heat of it warmed his insides. He sighed content as he leaned back ever so slightly into his cousin as he pulled the bowl closer to himself.

“Be careful,” Itachi warned as Sasuke took a few more bites of steaming liquid. “It’s still hot.” I know. That’s the point. Sasuke didn’t say this out loud and instead made a point of blowing on his spoon for his brother's sake. They sat in a comfortable silence as Sasuke slowly slurped his soup with Shisui running a hand down his unoccupied arm to keep him warm. It wasn’t necessary as Sasuke was finally starting to feel comfortable.

“Sasuke,” Itachi broke through the silence once Sasuke had finished the last of his meal. Sasuke looked up at him curiously as he reached forward to take his empty bowl. “How long have you been here alone?” Sasuke scowled at the reminder of his failed mission and felt his stomach become tight once more.

“They only left two nights ago.” He huffed and the contempt he felt was clear in his voice. Shisui adjusted his hold on him so he could look him in the eyes.

“Ne, what’s wrong kiddo? You almost sound disappointed.” His tone was light and joking but there was an underlying worry. Sasuke sighed and just shook his head electing to stare at the table rather than the two teens.

“I was supposed to be able to be by myself.” He mumbled dejected and understanding came over their faces. “But I messed it up and got sick instead.” He heard Itachi make a hum and stand from his seat moving his dish to the sink.

“I see.” He mused as he came back to sit in the chair directly beside the one Shisui was currently in rather than across as he had been. “That’s what you meant by ‘take care of it’.” Sasuke didn’t confirm or deny the statement but his silence was answer enough for Itachi to know he was right. The thought that he’d messed up the first time his parents had put their faith in him was enough to make him want to start crying all over again. He didn’t get a chance to work himself up before he felt a heavy weight fall on his head. “You didn’t mess up Outoto.” Itachi informed him sincerely and Sasuke risked a glance up at his face. He didn’t seem disappointed in him. “It isn’t your fault you got sick, though you probably should’ve worn a coat, you couldn’t have known it would rain.” Sasuke felt his eyes water again as he rubbed a hand across his face to stop from crying. He heard Shisui coo gently and felt himself being passed over.

“C’mon Itachi.” Shisui whispered standing up from his seat now that he wasn’t holding the younger boy. “He should probably get some sleep.” Sasuke wanted to interrupt saying he had only woken up a few hours ago and it was not nearly time to go back to bed, but he found himself growing tired as Itachi gave a nod standing with him in his arms. Sasuke allowed it to happen as he wrapped his arms around his neck. Itachi carried him all the way to his room and gently set him on his bed. Shisui followed behind and moved to close his curtains so light wouldn’t shine into the room. As Sasuke settled under the blankets Itachi lightly tapped him on the forehead.

“You took care of the house very well for your first time.” Itachi complimented and Sasuke frowned, ready to protest but he continued before he could. “I’m very proud of you.” Sasuke felt his words die out as his face became completely red. He decided the best course of action was to shove Itachi away as he laid down to hide his face in his pillows. He heard Itachi laugh as he stepped away. “I’ll wake you in a few hours to take more medicine, for now try and rest.” Sasuke didn’t even try to argue as his eyes slipped closed. He didn’t even hear Shisui’s snort, "not a baby pfft".

Sasuke recovered three days later and Itachi didn’t take any missions until their parents came back. When they returned no one mentioned Sasuke had ever been sick and his father was satisfied with the state of the house. All in all Sasuke's first time home alone could’ve been much worse.

Though he couldn’t help but notice his brother now made a point to know exactly when his parents were called away.

Notes:

I’ve always struggled writing pretty much any Uchiha character (I’m not sure why so don’t ask) so hopefully everything turned out ok
(Also I usually never make oneshots over 5k words, is this too long and I should break it up or??)

I hope you all have a blessed day!
