You're the Pick of the (Pumpkin) Patch

Summary:

Yoongi hummed to the songs that played in the background and looked up ideas on pinterest for his pumpkin. Namjoon on the other hand, looked up ‘silly faces for pumpkin carvings’ on google and went with the first image he saw.

Work Text:

“Hyung hyung!” Namjoon ran into the kitchen where Yoongi was making food. “Look at this cute trend couples are doing!” He shoved his phone in Yoongi’s face.

Yoongi stopped what he was doing and took Namjoon’s phone to get a good look at the photo. A picture of a couple wearing hollowed out carved pumpkins on their heads was displayed on the screen.

“We should do this!” Namjoon hopped in place excitedly.

“I’m sorry, but there is no way in hell I am going to wear a pumpkin on my head. They’re stinky and messy.” Yoongi scrunched his nose.

“I thought you might say that! Swipe to the next couple of photos!”

So Yoongi did and the next pictures consisted of friend groups and couples dressed up as ghosts. Just a singular white cloth draped over them and nothing more.

Yoongi looked back up at Namjoon who was currently giving him his biggest puppy eyes he could muster up. And what was Yoongi supposed to do? Say no to his love?

——

They were currently outside in the pumpkin patch parking lot. Namjoon had thought it would be a good idea to go to the pumpkin patch and carve pumpkins on the night of halloween. It would “feel more spooky” as Yoongi had recalled him saying. But Yoongi didn’t imagine they’d be dressed as ghosts while picking pumpkins. He thought they were saving that for later.

“I thought we were picking pumpkins?” Yoongi looked down at the white sheet Namjoon had thrown over him.

“We are,” Namjoon nodded as he placed a pair of heart shaped sunglasses over Yoongi’s cloth and handed him a pumpkin basket.

“We’re gonna get kicked out,” Yoongi said flatly while crossing his arms, looking over at Namjoon. Just like Yoongi, Namjoon was also dressed as a ghost in sunglasses… and a tie… and a headband. He looked a lot sillier than Yoongi did.

“We won’t. It’s Halloween! They can’t kick us out for getting in the Halloween spirit.” Namjoon laughed and reached out for Yoongi’s hand. “Lets just go in and you get to pick what we do first, okay hyung?

Yoongi huffed and took Namjoon’s hand. “I want to go in the maze first.”

——

Namjoon, albeit taller and broader than Yoongi, hid— well tried to hide— behind him the moment they stepped in the corn maze.

“Okay hyung, but are you very sure nothing scary will pop out? Like a hundred percent sure?”

“For the last time, Joon-ah. This maze isn’t scary,” Yoongi groaned as he tried to comfort his anxious boyfriend.

“But how do you know that?!” Namjoon aggressively whispered into Yoongi’s ear.

“Because Jungkook came the other day with Tae and said it was, and I quote, ‘lame’.”

“Hyung! Those two aren’t afraid of anything! They laugh at horror movies and watch true crime documentaries to help them sleep!” Namjoon once again aggressively whispered to Yoongi.

“Namjoon, why are you whispering?!” Yoongi swatted him away and turned around to face him.

“Because…” Namjoon looked around and leaned in close. “They might hear me.”

Yoongi took off the sunglasses he was wearing and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Namjoon. Baby. I promise you it’s a normal corn maze. Lets go further in, okay? And we’ll take all the pictures you want, okay?” Yoongi reached for both of his hands and gently squeezed them.

Namjoon nodded and stood up straighter, feeling more confident. “You’re right! It’s just a silly little corn maze. Why would anything-“

Rustling came from the corn field and a small child burst out.

“BOO!”

Yoongi and Namjoon both screamed and clung onto each other. And then they both realized it was just a child who was currently dying of laughter from the two men’s reaction.

Namjoon clutched his chest and gasped for air like he had just run a marathon. “I never want kids! Ever!” He shouted as the child ran back into the field to find their next victim.

Yoongi tried to laugh it off, obviously startled as well from the sudden outburst. “That’s the scariest thing you’ll encounter in this maze, Joon-ah. Let's go take some pictures now.”

And after thirty minutes of walking in circles and constantly coming to dead ends, they finally stopped to take pictures.

“How big is this maze anyway?” Namjoon asked in the middle of a pose. The camera counted down the seconds and snapped the picture.

“It’s not supposed to be that long. We just have no sense of direction,” Yoongi said as he positioned himself in another pose while Namjoon set the timer.

The phone captured another picture and Namjoon sighed as he set it up again. They had been taking pictures for nearly twenty minutes now, trying to get the last bit of sunlight that they could.

“Joonie, the sun is about to set and we still haven’t found our pumpkins,” Yoongi pouted even though Namjoon couldn’t see it.

“Last picture, I promise love.” Namjoon cupped Yoongi’s face and kissed him through the cloth.

Yoongi giggled and pulled away from Namjoon. “Follow me!” he said before running off.

“Hey-” Namjoon stumbled to grab his phone and ran after Yoongi.

Yoongi laughed as Namjoon chased him through the maze. They zigzagged and ran around in circles and even ended up back in the same place they were taking pictures at until Yoongi hit a dead end and was cornered by Namjoon.

“Hyung,” Namjoon panted and bent over to catch his breath. “Did you suddenly get the zoomies or something?”

Yoongi began laughing and crouched down to catch his breath as well. “I thought it would be fun to run around and try to find our way out,” He said in between breaths. “But I have a better idea now.” He stood back up and started pushing through the corn stalks, cutting through the maze instead of properly finding the way out.

“Hey, that's cheating!” Namjoon shouted and followed after him.

“They’ll never find out. Besides,” Yoongi puffed his chest out when they reached the other side and pointed to a sign. “We made it.”

Namjoon shook his head, but smiled fondly at his lover and held Yoongi’s hand. “I’m so in love with you.” He giggled and they walked out of the maze.

“Hyung, do you really have to be so meticulous about pumpkin picking?” Namjoon had picked out his pumpkin ages ago. From the moment they walked out of the maze, he picked up the first one he saw that looked decent enough. They’d been walking around for another half an hour since then. Yoongi was indecisive, going back and forth between wanting a big pumpkin or a little one. Did he want a white one or an orange one? Were the ridges on the white pumpkin cute or did he want a smooth orange one? It was an endless cycle of what would look prettier and whether he wanted to paint it or carve it.

Yoongi had finally settled on two small pumpkins and held them in his hands. One white and one orange. He held up the white pumpkin first and whispered to himself. “I can paint the white one with a little design… ahh but it’s too pretty to paint! It would look cuter as decoration.” He shook his head and held up the orange one. “I can carve this little guy but it’s too cute… The paint won’t stick to it too well though. There will be orange undertones.” He tsked and placed them on the floor. “Ini mini miny moe…”

Namjoon sighed and let Yoongi talk to himself as he walked off to find another white pumpkin. He knew they would be there for quite a while if he didn’t intervene.

When he walked back, Yoongi was picking the small orange pumpkin up. “Okay, Joon-ah. I’ve finally decided. I will take this little guy.”

Namjoon stared at Yoongi, not convinced by his decision. He picked up the white one Yoongi placed on the floor and took the one Yoongi was holding and walked to the register.

“You really didn’t have to buy both plus an extra. I would have just been happy with the orange one,” Yoongi pouted, feeling bad that he was being so difficult and indecisive.

“Hey, seeing you happy makes me happy, darling.” Namjoon kissed Yoongi’s pout. “No pouting, okay? Just carving and painting. And you get to keep the extra white one for decoration.”

Yoongi smiled and pulled Namjoon in for another kiss. “Thank you, my love.”

“Anything for you, pretty boy.”

They placed covers on the floor and began carving their pumpkins. They had promised each other no peeking until they were completely finished so they faced away from each other.

Soft music played in the background while they worked. A mix of r&b, ballads and some classical. They had a special playlist for these types of things. A chill playlist so they could work together in a steady manner. They used to just let their music play on shuffle, but they would get into heated rap battles when their favorite songs would come on, distracting them from whatever task they were doing so they decided making a playlist specific for these types of activities or work would be best.

They worked in silence, back to back, not wanting to distract the other from their work. Yoongi hummed to the songs that played in the background and looked up ideas on pinterest for his pumpkin. He didn’t want to do too much hard work. Simplicity was best. Namjoon on the other hand, looked up ‘silly faces for pumpkin carvings’ on google and went with the first image he saw.

“Are you done, Joonie,” Yoongi spoke up first.

“Yup! Just finished.

“Okay, turn around in, 3,” Yoongi counted down.

“2,” Namjoon said.

“1!” Yoongi shouted and they both turned around, holding their pumpkins proudly.

Namjoon’s was the standard jack o 'lantern you see on everyone’s porch steps. But it was cute nonetheless. Everything Namjoon did was cute to Yoongi.

“That’s the best pumpkin carving I’ve ever seen, Joon-ah!” Yoongi set his pumpkin down to clap. “Let me take a picture of you with it!” He pulled his phone out and took pictures of Namjoon posing with the pumpkin.

“Now let me see yours, hyung. Show me what you were working so hard on!” Namjoon grabbed his phone as well to take pictures of Yoongi.

Yoongi’s pumpkin had a small triangle mouth and two large round eyes.

“So cute, hyung. It’s just as cute as you,” Namjoon cooed as he held down the camera button to create bursts of photos. He didn’t want to miss a single moment of Yoongi posing and proudly showing off his little pumpkin.

Namjoon propped his phone up on the coffee table against the centerpiece and pulled Yoongi to his side. “One more picture?”

Yoongi nodded and held up his pumpkin. The timer started, counting down from 10.

“You know, I think you’re the real pick of the patch, lovebug.” Yoongi turned to Namjoon and giggled.

“Then I definitely found the prettiest pumpkin in the patch, my sunflower.” Namjoon whispered to Yoongi and kissed him sweetly. And the camera captured the perfect moment of the two lovers in their own little world sharing a sweet moment.
