Subservient to our hearts

Summary:

"Dragons, men─we are all the same. Slaves to our emotion, subservient to our hearts."

A collection of 100-word drabbles relating to Estinien's life. Some explore moments of canon, some pre-canon, some headcanon, and so on. Mostly independent of each other, with topics and relevant characters for each drabble listed in the chapter names inside.

Notes:

"Dragons, men─we are all the same. Slaves to our emotion, subservient to our hearts." - Orn Khai in the DRG 80 quest, in response to Faunehm speaking of Nidhogg's rage.

This started as a writing exercise and slowly grew into something more. As of posting this I have 37 drabbles written. I plan to post in batches of 5 after the first 10. I think the most common theme is melancholy, but joy and pride and other themes come in here and there to help spice things up. Most drabbles are from Estinien's point of view, but occasionally an omniscient narrator or other characters come in to provide fresh eyes.

Chapter 1: Estinien - Ishgard, After the Escape

Summary:

Timeline: Post-HW

Chapter Text

There were many reasons he'd fled Ishgard the moment he was able; the desire to honor those whose sacrifices- willing or no- had turned him into the person he was; the fear of speaking with those who had ensured he'd survived long enough to become the man he was; the strange wanderlust that had come over him during his time as the great wyrm's vessel, a need to be beneath open skies and with none to command him. One of those surely came from the man. But as for the other two…

There was a reason he had fled Ishgard.
