Chapter 1: A Tune Of Mystery

Chapter Text

Evie quickly scribble down all of the information into her almost full notebook.

She was currently at the Aquarium looking at the frog exhibit, writing down all information she learns about them. Evie loved frogs and loved learning about them! She would basically spend her whole day there after school. it's not like she was in any rush to go home anyway, listening to her parents constantly screaming at each other and her father hitting her. She lightly brushed her fingers across the white bandage that settled on her left cheek where a nasty cut was from her dad hitting her with one of his glass beer bottles. She sighed before hearing the dinging of the PA system coming on. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨! It announced before shutting off again. That was her cue to leave.

She stuffed her notebook that had cute little frog stickers on the front and a light green cover into her beige backpack with her kitty cat pen. She zips it up and slings the bag over her shoulders, her Aromantic pride pin and other cute pins on great display for everyone to see. She headed out of the frog section and started following the crowds to the front doors, the lights starting to slowly turn off in all of the exhibits. Evie finally leaves and heads down the busy main road. She walked past the fast food restaurants and her high school before turning down a corner to head down the street of a small, sort of run down neighborhood. The sky began to go down and enriched everything in a comforting orange glow. Evie couldn't' help but smile to herself while seeing the beautiful sky. Watching the sunset and sunrise were some of her favorite things to do. Since she didn't get much sleep anyway due to insomnia and her parents screaming at each other 24/7, she usually gets to see the sunrise and she loves to watch it before leaving for school.

As she nears the end of the gravel dirt road she enters through a chain link gate into a yellow and dead yard fenced off with a short chain link fence. Lawn equipment was scattered everywhere and the porch lights were emitting their yellow glow, and the lights from inside the house shined through the windows. While walking up the path towards the front house she could already hear her parents screaming which wasn't anything new but she still dreaded going in. She took in a deep breath in before quietly entering the house, making sure her parents don't hear her. She snuck past the living room where the two were currently hollering and up the stairs, closing her bedroom door shut. "Good.. finally alone." Evie said to herself as she dropped her backpack down against her wooden bed frame.

She pulls her phone and flops down onto her bed, checking through her missed notifications. It was just a bunch of reminders and notifications from different apps she had because she didn't have any friends to text anyway. All she had on her phone were some mobile games, frog informational apps, and a music app. She was on her phone for a good few hours when she heard her mother scream something. She usually just tuned them out but hearing this was loud and clear. "It's that brat's fault!! We wouldn't be in this mess if she hadn't been born!"

Evie's eyes widen and she put down her phone to gaze over at her closed bedroom door, listening close. "For once I agree!! We should just get rid of her tomorrow, put her up for adoption!" Her father agreed. Evie felt her heart shatter and panic set in through her body. She prayed with all her might that it was just the alcohol talking and they didn't actually mean that. They wouldn't actually get rid of their only daughter! But she knew that was just wishful thinking. 𝘐'𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥.. 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘮𝘦.. She thought before looking down at her phone's black screen. She took a good long look around her bedroom that began to go dark due to the sun turning to dusk as nighttime fell over her neighborhood.

"Well then.. If you're going to get rid of me, I'll just get rid of myself. Spare you the trouble.." Evie muttered to herself and got up from her bed and got to packing. She stuffed whatever she could into her backpack. She took out all of her school stuff and didn't care that it now all laid scattered on her bedroom floor. She stuffed a couple pair of clothes into it along with her portable phone charger, small bags of snack from her secret stash, flashlight, and all of the necessities. Once done with that Evie zipped it up and grabbed the rolled up cat themed sleeping bag and strapped it to her backpack. She slips on her green hoodie and worn out sneakers and then her backpack. With that, she went to her window and opened it up, crawling out. Luckily she was on the bottom floor because it was a trailer home so it was easy to get out of.

After that, she ran down the street as fast as she could, the street illuminated by the lamp posts.

She never looked back.

-

Evie stares down at the sidewalk below her as she wandered the nighttime streets, the occasional street lamp and car headlights illuminating her path. She wasn't entirely sure where to go or what to do now, but she knew she couldn't go back. She didn't want to anyway. She found herself at the old park she used to play at by herself. "This feels more like home.." She said to herself and started walking over to the giant weeping willow tree that stood proudly in the middle of the park. She pushes through the long leaves and headed for the trunk, ready to camp out here for the night. Not only was it hidden from cops or passerby, but it would give her shelter against the elements at least for a little bit. Plus, it was comforting to be in a place she recognized. She felt a lot safer at home.

But she is pulled from her thoughts once Evie tripped over something and face planted into the ground. "Ow! What the heck??" She exclaimed and turned around to find something half buried in the dirt. She digs it up and brushes off the dirt to reveal a rusty old locket of some kind. It had a silver chain and a dark rose colored gem in the middle. She hadn't seen anything like this before. Maybe someone lost it here? Evie then opened the locket and it started to play some mysterious tune akin to a music box. That sound filled the otherwise silent surroundings before a bright rainbow light is released, causing her to close her eyes from how bright it was.

Only once Evie opened her eyes she wasn't met with the park she was expecting. She was stranded in the middle of a forest filled with different and strange creatures all around her, and new sounds all around her. She looked down and could see the locket was still in her hand but the red gem was no longer the dark red it was before. Now it's a dull gray. She was really confused and freaked out when she realized it. The reports of the invasion years ago, the talks she has had with the frog exhibit curator, a land filled with mysterious creatures and talking frogs!

"I am in Amphibia?!?"
