Work Text:
The sun shone through the window in all its glory, covering the entire room in its fragile, golden light. A bird was chirping outside, perching itself on the branch of a large tree full of bright green leaves that seemed even brighter with the sunlight. It was beautiful, stunning even, but in a whimsical line of thinking, Aki found that it didn’t compare to the one next to him in the bed.
Angel was lying sideways, asleep, and facing him. Vermilion hair having gone from its original updo look to its natural appearance, splaying over his shoulders and down his back. He had tried to tie it back for the sake of sleeping without it getting everywhere on his face, but each time, it always came back down.
Aki wouldn’t admit it, but he liked it when it was down.
There was some space between the both of them. Angel hadn’t originally been here; he came in the middle of the night, flopped down next to him and made sure not to touch him, and then proceeded to roll around a bit before heading to sleep peacefully. He should have been surprised, but he had gotten used to it.
Just like he had gotten used to his presence overall.
He got up from the bed, careful not to wake the one sleeping, and looked at the small alarm clock sitting on the bedside table. It read in fine red print, 8:47 AM.
It was still early then?
He had some free time on his hands.
This was a routine he had grown accustomed to just like he grew used to Angel’s presence in his life (and in this small, crappy apartment in a far too big city). He got ready for the day, using the bathroom, and coming to the kitchen, deciding to cook breakfast. He had some skill, you know? He’d ought to use it.
(Especially since Angel had once told him, in that deceivingly sweet voice of his, “I could probably eat your cooking ten times over and never get tired of it,” and then pretended as if he didn’t say such a thing, hiding his face within his wings.)
Flick, went the turning of the stove knob and small flames lit up the circular top of the stove. He opened up the fridge and pulled out a few ingredients, setting them outside on the counter. As he began to cook, he heard water from the bathroom running, some tired grumbles, and finally found a pair of arms around his waist.
“It’s safe through cloth, isn’t it?” Angel said, amusement flickering in his eyes as he watched Aki nearly fumble and drop the spoon he was using to mix up the pancake batter he was trying to put together. He rolled his eyes. “It is, but that doesn’t mean you can hug me whenever you want, especially without a warning.”
“Aw, but I thought you liked it.”
“I do, just not without a warning!”
“Suuure, sure.”
He pulled away, sticking his tongue out before walking to the table in the kitchen and smacking his head down against the wood. He made a quiet ‘ow’ noise, but didn’t say anything else. It was honestly entertaining just for these things to happen. He’d say one thing, Angel would say another, and it would be tossed around over and over again.
It was simple like that.
In a few minutes, Aki had set a large plate of pancakes down before the other. The clatter of the plate made him look and once he saw the pancakes, he instantly perked up, grabbing the fork that was also handed to him and digging in without a single care in the world.
“You’re going to choke if you eat it that fast,” came his cool reply as he got himself his own helping of food.
“That’d be a hell of a way to die, huh?”
Okay, that obviously wasn’t going to deter him.
It was..kinda cute either way.
He was lucky that he knew he had to give him the biggest serving yet to deal with his massive appetite and want to eat whatever he possibly could. He was lucky he knew him so well. That was the perk of living together with someone and living in this intimate fashion, wasn’t it? You grew to knew someone more than you even knew yourself.
He wouldn’t have settled for anything less.
“Why don’t you cook like this everyday?” asked Angel, already almost done with his entire plate. Aki had been staring into space (trick statement, he was staring at Angel the whole time) and hadn’t realized that the plate was nearly empty. He stuck a fork into his own piece of a pancake, eating it.
“Because you have to learn how to cook too.”
“But you’re better at it than I am, so you should definitely cook everyday.”
“Don’t try and weasel out of those cooking lessons.”
“Come oooon..”
“No. You know you have to learn.”
“Damn it, worth a shot,” he exhaled sharply and glanced away, mock frustration on his face. He couldn’t help but chuckle and saw how red it made Angel’s face. His blush was almost the same color as his hair! His white wings fluttered at his embarrassment. It made him laugh.
“Sure, sure,” he copied what Angel had said before.
“Don’t mock me!”
“Too late.”
“You’re lucky I’m nice,” he made a face at him, taking his plate as well as Aki’s alongside their utensils, tossing the dirty plates into the sink and turning on the water, “city boys like you have no manners whatsoever.”
“Still stuck on that city boy thing?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“What, is your type those kind of boys?”
“I thought that was obvious,” he gave a devilish smile, “considering I’m here with you after all, Aki.”
He was teasing, he was obviously teasing, but it made Aki laugh and slightly blush all the same. He had no counter to something like that. Just hearing it be said so blatantly like that made his chest fill up with warmth and he wanted to never let go of that feeling. How did he reach this point? He didn’t know and he didn’t want to know. He wasn’t as jaded as he once thought.
“We ran out of ice cream,” Angel complained as he opened the freezer up.
“You want to eat ice cream in the morning?”
“Focus less on that and focus more on the fact we ran out. We have to go buy some.”
“..now?”
“When else? Next week?”
He got him there.
“Okay, fine, we can go buy some ice cream. Let’s go get ready to leave.”
“Alright!”
Angel was quicker on his feet, closing the freezer and dashing into the next room to get ready. With a lingering smile on his face, Aki headed into another room to get ready as well, greeting the day in its entirety.
