Work Text:

Julie was, for lack of better words, terrified. All she could really say was that being abducted from the school’s parking lot was definitely not on her bucket list for the year.

One moment, Jared was helping her out of the car as they were chatting and laughing with their friends. The next moment, her friends had disappeared and Julie was locked in the janitor’s closet on first floor by Ms. Nadger’s classroom. What was confusing was how she ended up in the farthest part of the school building without her wheelchair when it felt like moments ago she had been in the parking lot surrounded by friends.

She couldn’t worry about that right now though. She needed to get out of this closet and make it to the dance; she wanted to be able to see if her friend Raquel would win Prom Queen.

As Julie looked around the closet to find a way out, she heard a voice from the hallway outside. It was higher pitched, leading her to believe that it was a girl in her class. However, it seemed a bit manic.

The disembodied voice was approaching her door. It was chillingly melodic, sending goosebumps down Julie’s arms. “‘ Q’… is for Quiara, quiet, drowned in the pool… And ‘U’… is for Eunice.. she’s torn from one into two… ”

A fear bloomed in Julie’s gut as the voice stopped in front of the closet door, humming a quiet melody before continuing. “ And ‘E’s… are for the easy way, in five minutes tops… ” The door handled rattled. There were keys jingling.

The door opened, creaking eerily. A blinding light was immediately shone in Julie’s face and she raised her hands in response, trying to shield the light from her eyes.

Julie’s fear had grown more as the melodic voice continued its song from behind the mask of light. “ And a one-legged girl can bring an ‘N’… for end… ” The light switched off and Julie quickly tried to see through her blindness.

“Sorry Julie.” She knew that voice. It was one that haunted her around school, constantly in her ear about everything. She had heard a lot about Sara from her boyfriend, seeing how she devolved throughout the year. Sara’s tone of voice gave Julie a sinking feeling in her gut.

When Julie could finally see again she saw Sara Berry, prominent rich girl of the school, standing in front of her in a pristine white ballgown with her hair done up in a beautiful bun. Her face had a contrasting expression: manic smile with a crazed look in her eyes. Her look spelled Julie into a deeper despair.

Sara began to speak again. It was light and happy, as if discussing good weather. “There can’t be loose ends. And you’re the last one left. Such a shame, isn’t it?”

That was the last thing Julie knew. The quick swing of a baseball bat to her head gave her no time to think.
