Work Text:
When Baji told him about this ‘blind date’, Mikey was hesitant. Baji had given him a look, “You’ve been whining for weeks about how you’re a third wheel when we all hang out.”
They were standing at the Shrine after a Toman meeting. Everyone in Toman seemed to be dating; Baji and Chifuyu, Hakkai and Mitsuya, and Draken was dating Emma.
Mikey knew exactly what he was talking about, but that didn’t mean he wanted to be with someone. He just didn’t like being a third- or sometimes fifth or seventh wheel. “That doesn’t mean-“
“Just try it,” Baji cut in, “What’s the worst that can happen?”
Oh, Mikey could think of quite a few ways it could go wrong.
They could be in a different gang, they could talk too fast, they could get too close or have bad breath. All of those excuses were probably to hide his biggest fear. What if when he sees Mikey, he doesn’t like what he sees?
It was a blind date. His friends wouldn’t let him go on a blind date with someone who wouldn’t like him, would they? But they couldn’t know whether or not they would like him.. What if when he learns about Mikey, he’s disappointed? What if Mikey gave himself away only to have it given back?
“If it makes you feel better,” Baji derailed his train of thought. “We were just thinking you guys come to our halloween party together-“
Mikey took the scrunchie off his wrist and tied his hair back. He was still hesitant, but he was going to that party either way. “Fine.”
It was not fine .
Mikey was definitely not fine when his eyes met bright blue ones. His heart did a little flip and he felt like throwing up. Was that him? More importantly, was he walking over? He was. Mikey was tempted to hide behind someone- something, but they’d already locked eyes, it would be suspicious and embarrassing if he did that.
“Hey,” The guy was dressed as Dracula with his shirt open in the front and fake blood dripping down it. This was not fine at all. He was gorgeous. Mikey wouldn’t mind licking the fake blood off of his chest- No, he can’t think that. He shouldn’t think that.
“Hello,” Mikey replied, before internally beating himself up over how idiotic it sounded.
“I like your costume,” Mikey was wearing the most skimpy bunny costume. He hadn’t planned this himself.
“It was a dare honestly,” Mikey told him. He felt a bit more self conscious now that he knew the guy was looking at him. The blonde gave a look of recognition as Mikey added on, “I’m glad someone likes it at least.”
“So, what- do you want to dance?” The blonde seemed to be stumbling over his words, but if anything it was cute.
“Sure,” Mikey couldn’t stop himself from smiling. It was awkward- they were awkward, but Mikey felt almost charmed by the awkwardness.
“So, I’m guessing you’re Mikey-” The blonde said as he pulled Mikey in close, “You can call me Takemichi.”
“ Takemitchy ,” Mikey knew he’d said it wrong, but the look he got in return made him want to continue calling him that. “It’s cute- You’re cute.”
Takemichi didn’t even correct him, he just let out a beautiful laugh as they danced, “Oh really?”
“Yes really,” Mikey felt kind of dumb responding with that, so he was about to change the subject when his partner dipped him.
Oh god he was so close- they were so close it wouldn’t take much effort to close the distance- “You’re pretty when you’re surprised.”
Mikey wasn’t sure how to respond to that. Takemitchy was so different. It was almost irritating.. Well the fact his friends actually paired him with someone tolerable.. That was irritating. He didn’t really like them being right, but as he looked at Takemitchy, he felt so grateful.
Takemitchy pulled him back up and close enough so that their noses touched. Mikey wasn’t weak, he wasn’t a huge fan of weak people , but when it came to Takemitchy.. and the current lack of distance between them.. He was weak. He had one weakness.
There was so much tension between them you could cut it with a butterknife. It was almost like no one was there except them and the sparks in the air.
Mikey leaned in to kiss him, closing the small distance between them as their lips touched. Mikey definitely was getting stupid fake blood on his face, but a part of him loved the idea of people knowing they’d kissed, part of him loved the idea of Takemitchy marking him, even if it was completely unintentional.
They broke apart and Mikey couldn’t stop himself from smiling as he looked into blue eyes as vast as the ocean.
“Someone had a good time,” Emma commented at the end of the night, referencing the blood on his lips.
“I-“ Mikey couldn’t put it into words. “Yeah.”
After that, weeks passed. Takemitchy outside of the Halloween party was more awkward, more klutzy and completely adorable.
“I don’t think some of the people in Toman like me very much-“ Takemitchy commented one day as they sat at the shrine. Little did he know the division heads were who brought them together and half of the gang saw Takemichi as sunshine and a smile they had to protect.
“I’m pretty sure they do,” Mikey had his feet up on Takemitchy as he looked to the sky. “I have a question.”
“What is it?” Takemitchy’s full attention was on him as he spoke. Takemitchy was exactly who he wanted in a person, but he wasn’t sure Takemitchy felt the same.
“Do you like me?” Mikey blurted. What if he gave himself to someone only to have it given back? What if they don’t like him?
“That’s a stupid question,” The words made Mikey wince. He was about to excuse himself when Takemitchy continued, “Of course I do.”
Mikey looked at him with wide eyes.
“And you call me the oblivious one,” Takemitchy commented. Takemitchy pulled at his jacket, leaning over to kiss Mikey in one of the most awkward ways because of how they’d been sitting. “I like you- well, more than just like- You had me at hello.“
He was scared . He’d always be scared to trust another person with his heart.. but who wasn’t afraid of being hurt? “I like you too.”
There was a small pause before Mikey continued, “So we’re dating now?”
“I honestly thought we already were dating for a little while.” Takemichi looked away with a blush on his face. The pink of his cheeks contrasted with the blue of his eyes- Mikey couldn’t think straight - no pun intended.
Mikey gave him a look, “If we’d been dating I would-“ kiss you so much, touch you so much- Mikey stopped himself before he blurted out something stupid like that. Rather than say something, he pulled Takemitchy on top of him and into another kiss.
There was a cough a few moments later and they jumped apart.
“You guys are making out in front of a shrine?” Baji commented.
“That seems sort of sacrilegious,” Chifuyu added, looking between them and Baji.
Before Mikey could respond with a quip about how Baji and Chifuyu had probably made out here before, Takemitchy covered his mouth. “ Sacreligious huh?”
Chifuyu gave him a look. They definitely were talking about something he didn’t know about.
“I’m never speaking to you again,” Chifuyu sulked. Baji gave him a questioning look, raising an eyebrow.
Their little standoff was interrupted by Draken and Mitsuya walking up. Takemitchy shifted closer to him as other people began to appear. It was very endearing.
A couple hours later, after the meeting, they were walking from the shrine to his bike, Mikey was hanging off of Takemitchy’s arm. He was definitely being too clingy, but Takemitchy had never really minded before.
“Chifuyu had a dream him and Baji… did things.. at the shrine,” Takemitchy admitted to him.
Mikey laughed, leaning more on Takemitchy and burying his head into Takemitchy’s shirt. There were so many things Mikey wanted to tell him about, there was so much he didn’t know about Takemitchy.. but they had time to learn. They had time to open up and share themselves. As much as it scared Mikey.. He wanted to open up.
When Takemitchy looked at him with a smile that could light up the whole world he realized.. He wanted to be with Takemitchy. He wanted Takemitchy to see him . He trusted that Takemitchy wasn’t going to reject him.
“Do you like oreos?”
“Huh?”
