Chapter Text
Before the sun painted the Jeju horizon orange…
… busy feet shuffled down the hall that their excitement could be heard through their squeaking sneakers.
"Do you have drinks in the cooler?"
A quiet nod came with a ruffle of a bedhead.
"Have fun."
"We'll be back by breakfast."
"You can go for penalty if you have to."
"Hyung."
Jin noticed Yoongi's stunned face.
"I meant you can take your time."
"Anzai'll be disappointed that you're still unfamiliar with your basketball terms."
Jin leaned close and playfully tapped Yoongi's chin with his palm. "I'm quite sure he'll still love me like he loved the team."
Yoongi looked at Jin with a raised brow.
Jin smiled and said, "I love you too, yeobo."
A soft smirk came on to Yoongi's face.
What was he to do with his partner's sudden affection?
With a shy smile, Yoongi waved goodbye as he stepped in the car, greeting their guests like they were old teammates.
As Jin watched the makeshift team drive off to their game, he wondered how far the producers planned their guests.
When they conceptualised the show, Jin and Yoongi didn't really think far on who their guests would be. As far as they were concerned, they didn't want to entertain too much guests for a night. Jin had long learned how to make food for 7. On family holidays, he'd make for 20. Anything more than that was a challenge.
The number of guests that arrived were manageable and fairly interesting. There were a couple of guests who indulged Jin's love for fishing. A high school basketball team indulged Yoongi's passion for the game. There was a cat whisperer who taught Kimchi a trick or two. Many guests were more than eager to sing some BTS songs at night. And then there were a couple of intriguing guests.
From explorers that looked like Namjoon and Hoseok to an aspiring cook and musician who embodied Jimin and Taehyung in their youth, Jin was quite surprised that their production team managed to find guests that would make this experience quite uncanny. Jin found was mildly concerned on who were to come next. With a few nights left, Jin wondered if there truly was another Jeon Jungkook in this world.
Or was he naive to think he might even see a double of himself or Yoongi?
Jin shook his head.
As if there could ever be another person as handsome as him.
While he prepared a warm breakfast of pumpkin soup and dumplings, Jin worried whether Yoongi and Haru could manage their pop-up hostel on their own. Due to an important project, Jin had to leave for Seoul tomorrow. If they get a full house and more, Jin might come home to a mildly miffed Yoongi.
The least Jin could do was prepare the next meals.
As Jin opened their fridge and pondered over their menu, their phone rang. He picked it up, took note of their guest. As soon as he dropped the line, the phone rang again. And again. And then again.
"It can't be that bad," Jin uttered as he wrote down the incoming guests on their black board. As it were, they had ten guests. With six more coming in, sixteen might be manageable Haru and Yoongi.
The numbers, however, didn't end with sixteen.
By the time Yoongi and his team returned with much elation, Jin stood stunned in front of the blackboard.
"Are you all right?" Yoongi asked, patting Jin's shoulder. "Do you need help with breakfast?"
"I think you and Haru need more help tomorrow."
Yoongi furrowed his brows as Jin pointed on the board.
Thirty guests. A family of three just sent their confirmation that they were arriving a little before lunch.
A loud gulp was heard in the kitchen, drawing everyone's attention to their host, Min Yoongi.
"Even if we prepare everything beforehand, it'll be a challenge to clean up the entire house."
"Can we even accommodate thirty people?"
Jin crossed his arms. "If eleven people could fit in our old dorm room, why not?"
"Our house is not our old dorm."
"I meant that the possibilities are endless with the right configuration."
Yoongi looked out at their lawn. "We could set up the tents."
"Won't it be a bit cold?"
"If we get more airbeds out, the ground wouldn't feel cold."
"Can our tent fit six?"
"Six?"
Jin started to explain to Yoongi the groups of guests who were arriving that day. He also warned Yoongi on the possible guests that could arrive while he's gone.
Yoongi pulled Jin's sleeve. "What if we hire a part-timer?"
"Will the show allow that?"
The couple looked at one of the cameras, hoping the producers heard their plea.
"Another helper would be nice," Jin asked, with large round eyes.
Yoongi nodded in support, wearing a straight-lined smile.
Their helper, however, was far from nice.
Somewhere in between a small group of entomologists and a couple of foodies, a familiar figure skipped towards their garage. Their guest, who was to reveal that he was their helper, was smiling bright and wide.
Jin smiled back. Is this real? Is this a trick? Or is this a joke?
There was a fair amount of skepticism between the couple when their guest greeted them with wide open arms and a loud "Hyung!"
"Welcome to our home," Yoongi said, extending a hand to their guest.
Their guest looked confused as he shook Yoongi's hand.
"Let me carry your bag," Jin offered, making their guest more puzzled than ever.
"What's this? What's with this politeness?" Their guest remarked as he waved to every camera he passed. "Are you two showing off? Are you playing a game on who makes the best house husband?"
The couple turned back to their guest.
"Who's winning?" Their guest casually asked. "Is it Yoongi-hyung?"
A twitch came on to Jin's temple. Yoongi smugly smiled, amused that he left that impression.
Their guest's familiarity was something they were used to yet given their previous "familiar" visitors, Jin and Yoongi decided to take caution.
"Please have a seat," Jin offered while Yoongi headed to the kitchen.
"Would you like some coffee? Tea?" Yoongi also took out a couple of sachets from their counter. "We also have some kombucha."
"This is strange…" The guest mumbled. "Are you guys all right? Have things been too busy since the bed and breakfast opened?"
"Is it strange to offer a guest a drink?" Yoongi returned, offering a glass of water to their guest.
"I'm not exactly a guest, am I?"
The couple tilted their heads at the same time.
"HYUNG!" Their guest whined. "I'm here as your helper!"
"That's good to hear." Jin nodded as he crossed his arm. "How much is your hourly rate?"
"Rate?" Their helper leaned forward. "I'm getting paid for this!?"
"Of course." Jin took out his phone. "Just tell me your rate, your name, and your bank account and I'll send the payment right away."
"I should have asked for a rate when I cleaned the dorm," their helper quipped until he realised, "WAIT. WHY DO YOU NEED THOSE DETAILS!?"
Jin narrowed his eyes. As did their guest.
Should he cave to his instinct or continue to entertain his doubts?
"Hyuuuuung!" Their guest whined. "It's me! Jungkook!"
"Are you really?" This time, Yoongi tapped the white board, motioning Jungkook to look at the causes for caution.
"How can you doubt me!?" Jungkook pumped his fists, before he took a quick quip at the photos on the board. "Is it because I'm the last member who visited!?"
Yoongi tapped the photos again. "Look closer."
With wide eyes, Jungkook inched closer to the photographs. "Whoa. When did Jiminie look so young?"
"Because THAT Jiminie IS young." Jin quipped from behind. "Namjoonie too."
"Wow," Jungkook hummed as he looked at Namjoon's photo. "His thighs still look thicc."
"Probably from chasing all the dinosaurs." Jin said.
"It's not di—"
"I know." Jin interjected before Yoongi's correction. "Anyway, we've met the doubles of our members. As far as we're concerned, we're entertaining the possibility that you're also a double."
Jungkook's lips turned down to a large pout. "Do you honestly think I'm a clone?"
"Maybe an android?" Jin patted Jungkook's shoulder.
"Anything's possible," Yoongi added. "After seeing the other version of our members, nothing felt impossible."
"Have you met your doubles?" Jungkook's question made the couple exchange worried glances. "Anything's possible, right?"
"Have I been sleeping with a stranger?" Yoongi wondered with a teasing brow.
"Yah, Min Yoongi!"
"Anything's possible!"
"That's right!" Jungkook slipped in between the couple. "So it's perfectly logical that I'm the one and only Jungkook!"
"The others weren't fake." Yoongi corrected.
"Then I'll prove that I'm the Jungkook you two raised!" Jungkook tugged up his shirt's sleeve and showed his arm sleeve. "Do you think it's possible for my clone to have all these tattoos?"
"There are armys who have duplicates of those tattoos," Jin leaned forward. "And I'm quite certain it's easy to duplicate your piercings too."
"Maybe if I share something only members know," Jungkook beamed with a fist pump. "Like Jimin's youth tattoo at the back of his neck."
Yoongi sighed. "Quite sure army's mindful of those tattoos too."
At that moment, Jungkook's eyes grew rounder. "I'm quite sure army doesn't know about that one time, in Yoongi's studio, Jin-hyung was spread on the couch shirtl—"
With a strong tug, Jin pulled Jungkook so that he could whisper to his ears. The man who claimed to be Bangtan's youngest couldn't help but snicker as he uttered his story to Jin whose face was twitching with every word. One could tell that things were getting spicy when Jin's ears started turning red. A couple of punches were thrown in between.
Yes. This man was clearly Jeon Jungkook.
"Hey! What's he saying?" Yoongi protested as Jungkook continued his story just as Jin shut his mouth with the palm of his hand.
"How the heck did you know that!?" Jin exclaimed with a wide mouth and red ears.
"Because I know every nasty thing about you two!" Jungkook proclaimed, as if this information was something he could be proud of.
Yoongi looked at Jin with utmost concern. Jin returned his gaze with embarrassed dread.
"Do you want me to spill more things?" Jungkook playfully teased Yoongi with a shake of his shoulders.
With a knowing 'no', Yoongi looked greatly relieved to have Jungkook as their help.
Jin, meanwhile, decided on a couple of punishing tasks for Jungkook to do for knowing a little more than he should.
Thankfully, Jungkook had the lungs of a lead vocal to blow up a couple of air beds.
Jungkook's cheeks were round like blown gum as he did the heavy work Jin threw at him. He pitched the tents. He was now blowing the airbeds. After this, he should help Haru turn all the other beds in the house before the other guests arrive.
Meanwhile, Jin and Yoongi were now seated in their living room, welcoming a family of three.
"You set up tents?" The husband remarked as he watched Jungkook take another deep breath. This family of three seemed young and sprightly yet there was a bit of tiredness in the parents eyes, as if they had just gone through a tough day.
"That's for our younger guests," Yoongi answered. "Since you're a family, we've set up a room upstairs for the three of you."
"I actually don't mind camping," the wife, Song-hwa, answered. "We did bring our gear."
"Gear?" Jin asked as he came with a tray of drinks for the family.
The husband, Ik-jun, leaned forward as he picked up a drink, handing one cup to his son before passing the next drink to his wife. "We're here actually here to try camping by the beach for U-ju's birthday holiday."
"I want to see Canopus," The young boy beamed.
"Cannabis?" Jin tilted his head while Yoongi shook his head.
"It's Canopus, hyung." Yoongi corrected. Jin still looked confused. "It's those fire show parties kids love doing in the beach."
Jin scrunched his brows.
U-ju smiled and shouted, "IT'S A STAR!"
Yoongi realised his well of random knowledge was not that deep.
"It's the second brightest star at night and you can see it in the constellation of Carina. From February to mid-March, Canopus can be seen brightly in Jeju's sky."
The kid's eye smile was sparkling like stars.
"We were hoping to camp by the beach at night to catch the stars." The wife explained.
"I'm going to make a wish on Canopus!" The young boy excitedly pumped his fists. His father smiled and patted his head.
"I think the first thing you should wish for is good weather," Yoongi bluntly said. "I don't think it'll rain but it's been cloudy since yesterday. I'm not sure if it'll clear up tonight."
"Are you saying that we won't see stars tonight?" U-ju's smile turned upside down.
His parents were quick to notice their son's changing mood.
"We can still check out other fun things, sweetie. Do you want to go to Hallasan? We can also visit Seongsan Ilchubong? What if we eat everything in Dongmun market? I heard they have really good sundae gukbap! The sundae's soooooooo loooong you can use it as your scarf," said his father.
U-ju looked up to his father and giggled. His smile eased his parents' worry.
"There's a lot of things that you could do in the island. It's still early for water sports but you can definitely enjoy a couple of nature trails." Yoongi suggested.
Jin leaned forward and patted U-ju's knee. "If you want to see a farm and farm animals, I can introduce you to our neighbour. He's got some chickens, a couple of pigs, and rows and rows of hallabong and tangerine trees."
U-ju smiled but his focus shifted towards Jin's hand. "Ahjussi, are you married?"
All heads turned towards Jin's hand.
"Oh this," Jin smiled as he raised his left hand, showing a platinum ring with an embossing of a moon. "I guess you can say it's proof that I'm attached to a really cute yet pouty guy."
Yoongi pouted.
"Did you two have a wedding?" U-ju asked. Jin looked back and saw Yoongi's pout disappear into a smile.
"We had something like it," Jin spoke fondly. "We held it out in the lawn where we had a looooong table for our family and friends. There were flowers everywhere. We had all kinds of food. Yoongi was wearing a nice white suit and looked more adorable than he does now—"
"Did you have a ring bearer?" U-ju interjected. Yoongi snickered.
"The smallest of my closest friends carried our rings," Yoongi said, knowing all too well that Jimin wouldn't protest against what he just said.
"Far too many people meddled in that wedding," Jin scoffed. "But it turned out perfect in the end."
"Perfect?" Yoongi smiled in amusement. Jin answered him with a wink.
"Did you dance in your wedding?"
Jin nodded, recalling the oddity of slow dancing to Epiphany with Yoongi.
"How about sing? Were there singers in your wedding?"
"Do you know BTS? They sang 'Yet to Come' in our wedding!" Jin bragged, making Yoongi choke by his side.
"My parents never got a wedding."
"U-ju—" Ik-jun reached for his son in worry. "Don't you recall that day when we went to the city hall?"
U-ju's smile turned into a frown. "You just signed papers."
Ik-jun and Song-hwa were taken aback.
U-ju turned towards Jin and leaned to his ears. "I'm going to wish to Canopus that my parents get a proper wedding."
The boy's whisper was so loud that Song-hwa's cheeks turned pink.
"What would you like to see in your parents' wedding?" Jin whispered back, loudly.
"I want pretty flowers."
Jin took note with a nod.
"A tall carrot cake."
"Just a carrot cake?"
U-ju tilted his head. "Okay. I want a chocolate cake too."
Jin gave a thumbs up. "Anything else?"
"I want my mom to hold a large bouquet of flowers and a puffy white dress."
Jin eyed Song-hwa who replied with an embarrassed bow.
"And then I want a nice photo with her and my dad."
Jin smiled. "Do you also want to wear a puffy dress?"
"I want to wear a nice white shirt."
"And your dad will be in shorts?"
Ik-jun glared at Jin who answered him with a wink.
"I only see my mom and dad wear black suits. I want all of us in white."
"Any other requests?"
"Can I also wish that you sing for the reception?"
Jin smirked. "You need to wish on Canopus for three nights in a row to pay for my talent fee."
The boy didn't seem fazed by Jin's remark and continued to outline the dream wedding he wished his parents had. As Jin entertained the boy's whims and wishes, Yoongi led the parents to their room.
"I'm sorry about U-ju," Ikjun mumbled as he followed Yoongi up the stairs.
"You don't have to apologize," Yoongi remarked. "It was quite cute to listen to his dream."
"I didn't think it'd be that important for him," Song-hwa spoke.
"It's not like we didn't get to celebrate," Ik-jun added. "It was just unfortunate that we had emergency surgeries on that day."
"Surgeries?" Yoongi looked back as he led the couple down a hall, towards the reading nook of their library.
"We're surgeons," Ik-jun explained. "Song-hwa is a neurosurgeon while I'm in general surgery."
"That's amazing," Yoongi remarked. "You're the first doctors among our guests. And probably the one most skilled with a knife."
"Seokjin's knife skills has grown over the years, hasn't it?" Ik-jun remarked. "I saw him in that show with Paik Jong Won and the sashimi he cut on board a boat was commendable."
"If he wanted, Jin could also make a flower out of a watermelon," Yoongi quipped as he opened the door to a guest room. "But I'm quite sure his knife handling skill is not as delicate as yours."
"A scalpel and a knife are two different things—" Song-hwa noted until she uttered an impressed gasp. "This is our room?"
"It's a library…" Ik-jun approached the long wall of bookshelves. "You've got interesting comics here."
"It's got the entire set of One Piece and Detective Conan," Yoongi pointed at one of the lower shelves. "I figured the comics might distract U-ju if the weather's uncooperative."
A soft smile came on to his parents' face.
A part of the library became a reading bedroom when Taehyung clearly spent more time lounging in their library to read comics than vacation around the island. What started as a simple reading room eventually had a murphy guest bed that folded down from a closet should Taehyung prefer to lie on his back while rereading the Wano arc. By the window was a seating bench that Yoongi sometimes slept on when the afternoons got quiet. With the soft bristling of the camellia and tangerine against the blow of the island breeze, it was hard not to relax in this bedroom.
Ik-jun certainly felt his pulse slow down as he sat at the edge of the bed, looking at the rows of tangerine trees and smelling the citrus breeze from the window. Song-hwa was already lost in the shelves. More than thinking about what U-ju enjoyed, she felt her youth pass her gaze from one row of books to the next.
"You can get your towels and extra blankets inside this storage box," Yoongi said, calling the attention of the couple. "You can also brew tea and coffee using the kettle on the shelf." He then pointed at a little shelf near the window that had cups, a kettle, and other coffee and tea paraphernalia.
"This is quite a cozy room," Song-hwa commented, clutching a comic in her hand.
"It's great place to unwind." Yoongi suggested.
"It's been a while since we've had that." Ik-jun said as his gaze followed the subtle sway of the tangerine trees.
Meanwhile, Jungkook was teaching U-ju the fundamentals of survival.
Yoongi came down the steps, lured by the muffled sound from the lawn. He peeked from the kitchen where Jungkook held an air bed while U-ju threw a couple of punches.
"1! 2! Punch!" Jungkook shouted in repetition. U-ju followed his rhythm as sweat trickled down his neck, even with the cool spring breeze.
"At this rate, do you think he'd finish setting up the tents?"
Yoongi turned to find Haru setting down an armful of beddings on the dining table.
"Jungkook gets the job done," Yoongi said. "At the end of the day."
"JUNGKOOK-AH! STOP PLAYING AROUND! OUR GUESTS NEED TO DROP THEIR LUGGAGE!"
"Hyungie, must you shout?"
"Didn't you said you love my powerful vocals?"
"Yah."
Jin snickered as he led their newly arrived guests towards their outdoor accommodations.
"Kim Seokjin always wins, right?" Haru quipped.
"That makes me his best prize, right?"
As if Yoongi would let Haru's comment slip.
The young rapper snickered as she set the guests' empty glasses on the counter. "The two of you are insufferable."
Yoongi nodded. "We wouldn't survive each other if we weren't."
"A bit of humor helps."
"Seokjin's face immensely helps," Yoongi said last as he poured a glass of water to the thirsty U-ju and Jungkook who just stepped in the house. "Did you have a good workout?"
U-ju looked at Yoongi with dread. Jungkook laughed at the little kid.
"You shouldn't be pushing him too hard."
"He's young, hyung. He can manage." Jungkook ruffled U-ju's hair. "I played a lot when I was younger."
"You're still a riot now that you're older," spoke Jin, Jungkook's usual playmate. "You could learn a lesson or two from U-ju."
The young boy smiled, refreshed by his drink. "Where are my parents?"
"They're unpacking upstairs," Yoongi answered. "You can take a break in the reading room."
"Do you think we will see Canopus tonight?" U-ju earnestly asked.
Yoongi looked out to the lawn, taking note of the overcast skies that coloured the Jeju sea gray. "Honest, answer?"
The young boy nodded.
"It'll be tough to catch any star tonight," Yoongi answered, immediately noting the boy's changing disposition. "Is your wish that important to you?"
With hopeful eyes, U-ju nodded again.
"I want to have many memories as a family."
How could Yoongi say 'no' to that?
Once all the guests settled and left the house to enjoy every corner of Jeju Island…
Jin bit his lips as he stood in front of Yoongi.
"No."
"Hyungie."
Jungkook passed by, mimicking Yoongi's 'hyungie' as he carried the pillows and other beddings to the tents.
While Jin and Yoongi often said that they mostly agreed on anything, the reality was that they were still two different people with two different views on life. From time to time, these differences arise and the couple would recall their tense relationship when they first met. Unlike back then, these little fights were easily fixed with honest conversations, earnest apologies, and forgiving kisses.
Right now, it seemed that Jin and Yoongi were having an honest conversation.
"Yoongi, I know you mean well but this show is not about granting everyone's wishes."
"I know." Yoongi heard Jin click his tongue. "But when else would U-ju have a unique memory such as this?"
While Jin appreciated Yoongi's romantic ideas, sometimes, he found it a bit excessive.
"He's in Jeju, Yoongi. The island and my handsome face will already give him tons of memories."
"It wouldn't hurt to have more."
"Aish," Jin could no longer hide his exasperation. "Do you have any idea how many guests we have?"
"We have a lot."
"We struggled just to get things set up for all of our guests."
Yoongi looked at the pitched tents on the lawn. "But we made it work, didn't we?"
Jin knocked his head back. It was hard to argue against their efficient work ethic.
"You do know that I'm leaving tomorrow, right?"
Yoongi nodded.
"That's lesser hands to do any extra preparations."
"It doesn't have to be grand, Jinnie. We can host a simple lunch and take them around the island for photos."
"Min Yoongi…"
"Push comes to shove, we can ask Hyori-noona for help."
Jin breathed a heavy sigh.
"By tomorrow, more than half of the guests will be gone. If we do it on the day U-ju's family leaves, we could pull something off. By then, you would be back to help out too."
"You really want this to happen, don't you?"
"While we're able to, why not? Should we hesitate to do a good thing for a family?"
As a man who rarely hesitated, Yoongi's idea was starting to appeal to Jin.
"I love your generosity," Jin reached for Yoongi's hand. "But have you even asked the other members of his family if they're okay with our meddling?"
"Meddling?" Yoongi raised his brow.
"Holding an impromptu wedding for a child is nice but a wedding is just as important for the couple." Jin laced his fingers with Yoongi. "Don't you think it's just right to ask Ik-jun and Song-hwa if they want to hold a simple wedding ceremony?"
In moments like this, Yoongi found it difficult to move his gaze from Jin's earnest eyes.
People often tease them for being unable to look at each other. The truth was, Yoongi couldn't handle the intensity of Jin's gaze.
Regardless of whether Jin was playful or exhausted, his gaze was like gravity that always pulled Yoongi close. At first, this gaze scared Yoongi. These days, it was, at times, an unnerving gaze that carried the weight of Jin's words.
"You're right," Yoongi said. "This isn't exactly our call to make."
'"If the entire family's in, I'm in," Jin squeezed Yoongi's hand.
Now starts the hard part of finding time to get the couple on board.
Meanwhile, Jungkook couldn't find Haru.
Jungkook was quite certain that she was just beside him after fixing the beddings. He wanted to invite her to iced coffee but suddenly Haru disappeared.
"Yoongi-hyung, did you see Haru?" Jungkook asked a pensive Yoongi.
Yoongi looked around their living room and answered, "Isn't she with Jin?"
"Is she?"
"Have you seen Jin?"
"Weren't you two just fighting?"
Yoongi furrowed his brows. "How did—"
Jungkook booped Yoongi's nose. "I know you two long enough to know when you two are having a domestic tiff."
"I don't even think you could call it a fight," Yoongi sighed. "It was closer to a discussion."
"That's what my parents say when they're having a fight," Jungkook quipped as he took a seat by their kitchen counter. "It's quite rare for Jin-hyung to show that face."
"That's just his allergies to serious talk."
"So it IS something serious."
"Just a bit," Yoongi said. "But not something for anyone to worry over."
Jungkook breathed a heavy sigh. "I guess your 'discussion' has nothing to do with my sleeping arrangement tonight."
Yoongi straightened up with a mild worried look at Jungkook.
"I can take the secret room," Jungkook leaned.
"It's already taken," Yoongi answered as he stood up and took a pitcher of iced coffee from their fridge.
Jungkook pounded his fist on the counter. "How could you offer your hidden mancave to a guest!?"
"Rules are rules." Yoongi poured coffee in a tall glass.
"Someone found the room!?"
"Haru's quite a detective." Yoongi handed the glass of coffee to Jungkook.
The golden maknae was flabbergasted.
"Drink up," Yoongi spoke. "You had a long day today."
"How did she—"
"With great patience and curiosity."
"I've been looking for it since forever!"
"I guess you haven't looked hard enough," Yoongi teased their youngest with a raised brow. "Since the entire house is packed, we could just book you a room at a nearby hotel."
"Am I really a stranger to you!?" Jungkook grabbed the coffee from the counter. "Have you forgotten how we used to share a dorm together!? That we shared the same bed together!?"
"I'm sure I haven't forgotten," Yoongi patted Jungkook's shoulder. "And I'm VERY CERTAIN Jin hasn't either."
Jin sneezed as he felt an itch under his nose.
"Are you okay, oppa?" Haru asked as their vehicle inched forward.
The rained drizzled on their vehicle, washing the wisp of sand, soil, and grime.
"I usually get the sniffles when Yoongi thinks of me," Jin spoke as Haru snickered in her seat.
"Isn't it the other way around?" Haru raised her phone to show Jin some "evidence"
A strong flush coloured Jin's ears and his cheeks red. "Love moves in many directions."
"This is a very sweet direction," Haru said, showing Jin another "evidence."
"Yah!" Jin shoved her phone down before making the turn at the intersection. Seeing his face was one thing. Seeing his face smitten with love was another.
Unlike the many cheesy couples that irritated Haru, she realised that Kim Seokjin was one of few people she knew who genuinely loved his partner. He was not a man 'in love'. 'Romance' could hardly describe the efforts Jin made in this afternoon. Or the many days Haru had seen Jin quietly attend to Yoongi within and outside of their home. Or the few minutes Haru noticed Jin playfully demand for Yoongi's affection.
If Jin saw love moving in many directions, Haru felt that Jin's love lead to interesting twists and turns.
Where would this love lead? Only Jin knew.
Given the "evidences" Haru took, she thought this was heading towards something sweet.
Things didn't look sweet for the young U-ju.
While he managed to tumble down a hill in a giant ball, eat a humungous sundae, and laughed to a lot of his father's jokes, U-ju wasn't pleased to see the rain that night.
"U-ju, would you like to eat something warm for dinner?" His father asked as they made the turn towards the market.
"They have tasty dwaeji-gukbap in the market," Song-hwa suggested as she peeked at the backseat, noticing her step-son's unwavering gaze at the rain.
The young boy didn't reply nor even give a small response during their dinner. The most his parents saw in him was the growing dismay on his face as the rain continued. By the time they returned to No. 7, U-ju's smile was completely gone.
"It's all right, buddy," Ik-jun held on to his sun who was now wailing at the sight of a cloudy evening sign. "Clear skies usually come after a bit of rain."
"Bwut whut whiff vv it shill raaaains," U-ju cried as Ik-jun excused himself from Yoongi who asked if he needed something. Asking for clear weather was certainly out of the question. Instead, he motioned to go upstairs as he eased his son's tears with soft comforting hushes.
As U-ju's cries grew fainter, Song-hwa approached the kitchen counter. "May I have some hot water?"
"Of course," Yoongi motioned towards the kettle. "Would you like some tea?"
"Do you have some instant hot chocolate?"
"I think Jinnie still has a couple of packets in the drawer."
"Jinnie?" Song-hwa asked as she opened the drawer. "Is that your nephew?"
"It's Seokjin." Yoongi said with a mild flush on his cheeks.
Song-hwa chuckled lightly. "Sorry. I thought you meant someone else."
"Don't worry. I often wonder when Jin would ever act his age."
"Is there a large age difference between you two?"
"Three months does feel like we're ages apart sometimes," Yoongi remarked. "But I've grown to appreciate his childishness."
"It makes you feel young, doesn't it?" Song-hwa commented with a smile.
"It certainly made me look at life a lot differently," Yoongi answered warmly.
"Ik-jun has his childish moments as well. Sometimes it's because he has to relate with U-ju. I hadn't realized that he also just wanted to be cute."
Yoongi smirked, thinking of Jin's own cuteness.
"But what truly impresses me is the maturity of their childishness," Song-hwa said as she poured a packet of chocolate powder in a cup. "To easily smile even when things hurt. Or to easily give way when I become selfish."
She tossed the empty packet in the garbage can.
"Do you know that I was the one who requested not to have a wedding?"
Of course, Yoongi didn't.
"I used my schedule as an excuse but the truth was, I felt too old to be a bride."
"You don't look old at all," Yoongi said as the kettle whistled. "You couldn't be older than me."
"I am much older than you, young man," Song-hwa wagged her finger before picking up the warm kettle. "At my age, I felt it was unnecessary to fuss over what I should wear, my make up, the guest list and all those things. Ik-jun and I were perfectly fine with signing our papers and submitting it to the registry. It was just enough to sort out the legal aspects. At that time, the pageantry felt menial."
"For some, the pageantry is all they have."
Yoongi's comment made Song-hwa turn his way. "I didn't mean to be rude."
"You weren't," Yoongi assured her. "It's just that there are some people who hold on to that pageantry because it's meaningful for them. In a way, I empathise with U-ju who finds value in capturing important milestones in your family, such as a wedding."
"Is that why you and Seokjin held a wedding?" Song-hwa wondered.
It was hard not to hide the growing smile on Yoongi's face. "Since there weren't any legal processes for us to marry, it was meaningful for me to—"
"For you?" Song-hwa interrupted.
"I kind of ambushed Jin into a commitment ceremony," Yoongi confessed.
A small chuckle escaped from Song-hwa's lips.
"Technically, our family and friends were also a part of it. I was hesitant at first but it was great to see all of our loved ones jump in on the idea."
Song-hwa's gaze was affixed on Yoongi with great expectations.
"Seokjin was about to move here so we made it appear as a house warming party. On my end, I wanted to commemorate that moment and mark a new chapter in our relationship."
"I didn't imagine you'd be a sentimental person," spoke Song-hwa.
"I've been scolded for being too romantic," Yoongi said with a light chuckle.
"My husband's quite a romantic."
"Maybe U-ju took after him."
"He sure does." Song-hwa smiled as she poured water into a cup. "Still, planning a wedding takes time. There are hotel reservations, fittings, invitations—"
"Maybe you could start with something simple," Yoongi uttered, hearing a bit of Seokjin's earlier protests at the back of his head. "If you're open to it, I have a simple suggestion."
"I'm all ears."
Yoongi turned to find Ik-jun, his fellow romantic, wearing a bright wide smile.
"Especially if it will put a large smile on my son and wife's faces."
As it was, Song-hwa's smile was brimming wide.
Yoongi smiled too when he noticed Jin step in their home, hearing the couple's affirmation.
It wasn't long before the couple gathered around Yoongi as he shared his simple wedding plan. Some floral arrangements would be made. Dresses and suits could be borrowed somewhere.
Jin listened in at one point and offered his own suggestions for their little celebration. A wonderful lunch with their family favourites. And then a wedding cake, the kind that everyone could enjoy.
After sorting a couple of flavour combinations for their cake, Yoongi suggested memorialising the day with a couple of picturesque family photos around the island. Sunrise by Seongsan Ilchubong. Sunset at Gwaki Gwamul Beach.
More suggestions came as Jin served dinner for those around the table. It wasn't long before drinks were poured and stories were told. Warmth filled the table as Yoongi and Jin shared their story about their commitment ceremony. Laughter soon echoed in the living room when Jungkook just couldn't contain the idiotic tales of Bangtan's eldest couple.
As the night passed, it was clear to Song-hwa why pageantry, at times, is important. In listening to Yoongi and Jin's fond memories of their wedding, Song-hwa realised how some moments in life are worth commemorating. Losing such a valuable memory to the drone of everyday would be tragic. Song-hwa had already missed far many opportunities in her life. She finally understood how she couldn't overlook this precious memory for their family.
"Let's do this," Song-hwa whispered to her husband as things settled down around the table.
"It also doesn't have to be now," Ik-jun remarked. "We can plan for it when we get back."
"Do you think we'll have time when we get back?" Song-hwa wondered, clutching on to her husband's arm. "While we still have time, let's make good memories."
The smile on Ik-jun's face was unforgettable.
Yoongi couldn't stop talking about their smiles even when they got back to his studio.
"That really turned out well, didn't it?" Yoongi pressed on to Jin who answered by ruffling his partner's hair. "Who knew we'd have another wedding in this home?"
"Isn't that good luck," Jungkook remarked as he flopped on the futon that Jin just laid in the studio.
Jin felt his eyebrow twitch. "Why do I feel like we're going to have bad luck?"
"Hyung," Yoongi clutched Jin's hand. "We've already received their consent."
Jin pointed at Jungkook who was now rolling all over their futon. "I didn't give my consent for this."
"JAGIYA! I AM ALL YOURS!" Jungkook shouted, his arms wide open to Jin.
As if on cue, Jin kicked Jungkook. Jungkook happily returned Jin's "affection" by catching his foot.
Yoongi could tell that at any moment, these two would throw punches at each other like they did in their youth. Before Jungkook met Jin's fist, Yoongi held on Jin's shoulder. "I told you he won't forget, Jungkook-ah."
"It's not like I have a place to sleep," Jungkook said, patting the empty space by the futon. "Let's sleep together like we used to, JA-GI-YA!"
"YAH!" Another set of playful kicks were thrown before Yoongi pulled them apart.
"Have you forgotten that you have a shoot tomorrow?" Yoongi gave Jin a pointed look. Jin pumped his fist to his side before giving Jungkook a hard playful glare.
"We also have a busy day tomorrow," Yoongi handed Jungkook a pillow and gently pushed him off the futon. "It'd be great if we could all get some rest."
Jungkook's mouth dropped at the gesture. He looked painfully at Yoongi. And then at Jin.
"Be a good kid and sleep on the sofa," Jin said as he pulled Jungkook up.
Like he was still fifteen, Jungkook hissed and beelined for the sofa. "I'll let you two pass tonight but it will come with a great cost."
"We're being nice by letting you sleep at the most comfortable sofa in this home," Jin quipped before he felt the gentle tug of Yoongi's hand.
"If it were so comfortable, why aren't you two sleeping on it?"
"It's clearly for one person, JK." Yoongi remarked as he nudged to his side, giving some space to Jin.
"That never stopped you two before," Jungkook snipped before hearing protests from his hyungs and their good nights.
"What time is your flight tomorrow," Yoongi asked as he settled in Jin's embrace.
"Seven AM," Jin answered.
"I could drive you to the airport."
"Don't be silly. We've got thirty guests to feed and I've already made arrangements for tomorrow."
"Have you packed?"
"I've got everything I need in Seoul." Jin tightened his embrace. "Except you."
"Yah." And Jin said Yoongi was the romantic between them.
"I love you," Jin whispered as Yoongi snuggled in his arms.
"I LOVE YOU TOO," Jungkook replied.
Yoongi slept well that night.
The next morning, Yoongi woke up without his love by his side.
At five in the morning, Yoongi sauntered downstairs and was surprised to feel warmth in the kitchen. A cloud of steam hovered over the stove as Jin shuffled in between pots, his long hair damp against his neck.
"You should have slept in," Yoongi said, picking up a hair tie from a drawer. "Jungkook and I could prepare the breakfast later."
"It's fine," Jin answered as he pulled his bangs off his sweaty forehead. "I have all the time to sleep in the set later."
"Will it be a laid back photoshoot?" Yoongi stepped close as he motioned Jin to turn around. He couldn't help but notice how his partner had already busied himself with breakfast. On the stove was a bubbling pot of stock that smelled of warm mushroom and hint of the sea. Beside the pot was a cast iron griddle where Jin poured an egg mixture until it sizzled.
Sweat trickled on the sides of Jin's neck that Yoongi couldn't help but worry over his partner. He pulled the hairtie between his fingers and tied the end of Jin's mullet.
"Rolled eggs?" Yoongi asked with a smile, pleased with his little gesture.
Jin easily flipped a side as he shaped the egg roll. Flecks of carrots and spring onion coloured the bright yellow roll, showing Jin's extra effort for everyone's breakfast.
"I can do that later," Yoongi said, his hand sliding down Jin's wide back. "You should get ready for your trip."
"I'll just finish this mix," Jin looked back at Yoongi with a smile.
"Have you eaten breakfast?"
"I've had bits of the badly rolled eggs."
"I should make you a proper breakfast." Yoongi reluctantly stepped away from Jin.
"It's fine," Jin turned back and noticed Yoongi examining their fridge. "I need to fast anyway for the shoot."
"Are they taking a shirtless photo?"
"If it is, would you be against it?"
Yoongi stood straight, shrugging his unease. "N-no!"
"So cute," Jin mumbled as he poured another layer of batter for the egg roll.
"Can't you at least have some fruit?" Yoongi took out some apples. Jin thought Yoongi looked adorable when he's worried.
"If you cut them into bunnies, I would," Jin said sweetly.
"Coffee?"
"I'll take one of the bottled drinks."
"I'll make an iced mocha for you."
"Are you spoiling me, Min Yoongi?"
"Is it wrong to treat you nicely, Kim Seokjin?"
The two men exchanged a glance that could not hide their affections.
"Let's have breakfast together," Yoongi said. "It's been a while."
"I'll join you once I finish these eggs."
"Don't make me wait too long." Yoongi took more things out of the fridge.
A short chuckle escaped their lips, taking note of their restraint.
It had been a while.
As Jin sat across Yoongi, it honestly felt like it had been forever since they were by themselves. Two weeks felt so long yet the idea of being apart from Jin for just a night made Yoongi yearn for Jin's undivided attention. More so, his touch. A brush of their finger tips was hardly enough. Nor was the swipe of a thumb to his lips. Their wants were hidden between light-hearted smirks, warm gazes, lingering touches and a long list of reminders.
Trying to keep track of their tasks at hand was quite overwhelming. Yoongi's confidence whittled as Jin tried to remember the things they needed to do and what they had to prepare for the wedding. Yoongi scribbled on his yellow pad like he was scrambling for lyrics. It wasn't long before he filled a page of reminders. The last reminder he wrote involved sending love to Jin before going to sleep. Yoongi looked up and saw Seokjin blow a flying kiss. He caught it quickly with his palm.
"I'll keep it for later."
"I can easily give another one later."
"The more the better."
"What kind of love will you send me later?" Jin leaned forward. "A selca?"
Yoongi smirked. "That's some cheap love."
"Even if it's the kind that only I should see?"
Kim Seokjin just threw restraint out the window.
Yoongi was on the verge of throwing his too until he heard Jin's phone ring.
"My cab is here." Jin stood up.
"Why are you in a rush to go?" Yoongi followed after Jin who slipped on his sneakers. "It's not like your plane's about to leave."
"I also can't afford to miss my flight." Seokjin slung his jacket over his shoulder as he beelined for the door. Yoongi was not far behind.
"Is there someone who will pick you up at the airport?" Yoongi slipped on a pair of sneakers as Jin walked up their driveway.
"There should be," Jin stopped and looked back. "Although I don't know if they've changed my manager or not. I got a newbie during my last photoshoot."
"Hobum-hyung probably thinks you get along better the younger ones." Yoongi caught up with Jin who was laughing at his comment. "By 'get along' I meant torturing them."
"Do you think it's hard managing a worldwide handsome star like me!?" Jin walked forward until he reached their gate.
"It's easy if they get on your good side," Yoongi quipped.
"Are you implying that you can easily manage me because you're on my good side?"
"Bark."
Jin let out a pitched impish bark.
"Beg."
Jin leaned down and showed the roundest pitiful eyes at Yoongi.
"Hug."
Without protest, Jin threw his arms around Yoongi who immediately sank his face on the crook of Jin's neck.
"I don't think that's the kind of managing the new hires should do, Yoongichi."
"I'm not exactly your manager, am I?" Yoongi brushed his nose on Jin's neck.
Jin was to lift Yoongi's chin for a kiss until he noticed the camera that faced the driveway. Restraint was certainly in order.
"Of course you're not," Jin said as he squeezed Yoongi tight. "Call me if you need anything else from Seoul or if something comes up."
"I'll call you when I feel like it."
"Like when you miss me every second?"
Restraint turned into remorse as Yoongi pushed Jin away.
"Yah!"
"Your taxi is here."
Jin pursed his lips to a pout. "You'll regret this, Yoongichi."
He already did.
Yoongi already missed his warmth as he watched his love walk away and wave goodbye.
Jungkook woke up to see his loving hyungs gone.
He panicked for a bit.
Did he wake up too late?
If he did, Jin would be on to his case.
But since there was no Jin throwing a punch to his face, Jungkook realised he was off the hook.
As his worry eased, Jungkook leisurely ambled out of Yoongi's studio. He checked his phone's clock and noticed that he was, at best, a half-hour late from their breakfast prep. Knowing Yoongi, Jungkook only needed to say his sorries and get to work.
What surprised him was how everything was almost finished when he got down.
"What the—"
"Have you had breakfast?" Yoongi quickly set a plate to the counter. "I've still got some sliced fruit but I can make some janchi guksu for you."
Jungkook noticed the simmering pot and the savoury scent of mushroom stock that filled the kitchen. Vegetables and noodles were already neatly lined on various trays, ready for the whims of the morning chef. Even the rolled eggs sat comfortably on the table, eager to welcome the waiting mouths of their diners.
"You should have woken me up earlier, Yoongi-hyung." Jungkook bemoaned as he got a slice of apple, shaped like a rabbit.
"Jin should have woken us up earlier."
"He did all of this?!"
"He said he did the easiest part," Yoongi explained as he started setting the bowls on the table. "Once the guests start waking up, we'll do the hard part of assembling the dish and cleaning up."
"Still…"
Yoongi patted Jungkook's shoulder, reminding him of the many silent ways Jin did his hard work. "Just send him your thanks."
Jungkook popped a piece of apple in his mouth, grateful that Jin still looked after the younger members.
As the sun peeked through the slats of the living area's doors, guests started to appear in the kitchen. The bubbling of the stock was increasingly muted by the chatter and the laughter from the dining area along with the clatter of Yoongi, Jungkook, and Haru cooking and cleaning in the kitchen. Despite his physical absence, Jin's presence was still felt in the warmth of the breakfast he planned and the laughter that still lingered in his home even as their guests said their goodbyes for the day or for a long while.
One guest, however, was quite keen on speaking with Jin.
"Do you think Jin's arrived in Seoul?" Ikjun asked Yoongi as he managed to sneak away from his wife and child who were busy placing their camping gear in their car. "I told my sister about the wedding and our closest friends caught wind of it. They insisted on helping."
"Are they flying to Jeju?"
"I'm not sure whether they could come here or not," Ikjun confessed. "At best, would it be all right if my sister pass my suit to Jin?"
Yoongi tipped his head, "Seokjin has a tight schedule and I'm not exactly sure where he'd be at a particular moment. If she sends it to our office for Seokjin, he could definitely pick it up."
"That sounds great," Ikjun sighed in relief.
"Don't worry about it," Yoongi said, lightly tapping Ikjun's shoulder. "You should be having fun with your family rather than worry over these details."
"My sister scolded me for bossing around idols."
Yoongi laughed.
"And U-ju's still upset that he hadn't seen his star."
"Well, you might have a good chance when you camp out Hamo Beach. There's hardly any light noise there at night."
"Here's hoping the clouds are clear tonight," Ikjun took a deep breath.
Yoongi passed a thermos of hot chocolate to Ikjun. "I hope U-ju makes his wish."
"If he doesn't," Ikjun took the thermos. "Should we cancel the wedding?"
"Would your son's wish stop you from doing something special with your family?"
"Of course it wouldn't," Ikjun patted Yoongi's shoulder. "Thanks for making this happen."
"You're welcome," Yoongi said with a wide smile.
Ikjun headed out the main door with a demureness that tried to contain his excitement. His steps shuffled like he was about to run. His lips upturned to one side, shyly smiling for a sweeter tomorrow ahead.
Jungkook, meanwhile, wondered where time went.
Breakfast service sped past him. So did the checkout of many people which halved the occupancy of No.7.
While there were many things he hadn't noticed, Jungkook couldn't help but take note of how Yoongi seemed troubled over his phone.
"Are you all right? Do you need help in something?" Jungkook asked his quiet hyung.
It took a moment for Jungkook's question to register in Yoongi's head. He had a long morning that was now breaching towards the early minutes of the afternoon. "We don't have leftovers from breakfast, right?"
Jungkook nodded. "Hyung, do you want me to cook?"
"Sure," Yoongi took out his phone from his pocket. This was the nth time Jungkook had seen Yoongi take out his phone in the last five minutes. "I think Jin thawed some hamburger patties in the fridge."
"Since he's not here, shall we make a curry hamburger steak with mashed potatoes?"
Yoongi stood still. His fingers clutched his phone tight.
"Hyung?"
Something about Jungkook's question struck a chord with Yoongi. Something about Jin not being here mildly unnerved him.
Jin's absence shouldn't be a big thing.
Yet today, as he looked at his unread message to Jin, Yoongi felt uneasy.
As a couple, Yoongi and Jin were familiar with being apart. There were location shoots to be done at some city or music that had to be recorded in another country. Through all those times, they found ways to get through the absence of the other. Yet those moments apart felt like a distant memory since they had never been separated since Jin moved to Jeju.
As such, the still message screen increasingly bothered Yoongi.
He missed Jin. A lot more than he'd like to admit.
"So, no curry?" Jungkook snapped his fingers in between Yoongi and his phone. One of many moments Yoongi's grateful for Jungkook's parents.
"If Haru's fine with curry, then we can have curry."
"But are YOU fine with curry?"
Jungkook's question puzzled Yoongi. He just realised that it had been a while since he had curry.
Meanwhile, Jin didn't even know there was a curry crisis in his home.
The only crisis he had was to keep himself awake in his busy schedule.
"I want coffee…" Jin mumbled as he looked out the car window, sighing over the delicious coffee he shared with Yoongi hours ago.
"Do you want to stop for coffee?" His manager asked.
Jin shook his head. "I can get one at Hybe."
The photoshoot just ended and Jin was resolved to at least have a heavy late lunch at Hybe's cafeteria. It had been a while since he had checked on his investment. Beyond the many talents on this building, Jin liked to think his money was used to feed them well.
"By the way," his manager turned to hand his phone over. "You got a couple of texts today."
Jin clicked his tongue. Yoongi's probably worried that he hadn't texted since he landed.
He said his thanks to his manager and immediately saw the series of texts Yoongi made.
Your mom called and wondered why you weren't answering her call.
Ik-jun's sister dropping by some things at Hybe. Let our manager know so that the lobby can receive it in your stead.
Head's up, I also gave her your number. You might mistake her as your mom so answer with care.
And while you're at Hybe, can you check my studio and get one of my hard drives?
Past the many reminders Jin needed to do in Seoul, his eyes lingered over a couple of messages that read far too loud.
Were you able to take a nap?
Are you quiet because the camera's having trouble capturing your handsome face?
Do they have good catering?
Jungkook cooked hamburger curry for lunch. I think you might like this kind of curry.
A smile eased Jin's hungry lips.
"Saw something good?" His manager asked.
Jin nodded softly. "I just read something really cute."
Cute hardly described U-ju's adorable eyes.
The evening was deep and U-ju's eyes were round and wide that it swallowed any light that glittered in the sky. More than using the telescope that Song-hwa gifted him for his birthday, U-ju scanned the sky with great wonder, pointing to stars he easily recognised.
From a distance, Ik-jun and Song-hwa sat by the fire, enjoying the gentle evening wind and drinking their third can of beer. Had it not been for their fire, the entire beach was dark. The thin crescent moon shone only on the crests of soft waves. Any sign of evening life on the island hardly interfered with the stars in the sky. This made Ik-jun happy for U-ju.
"Are you hungry?" Ik-jun asked his preoccupied son who was still studying the star-studded sky. "Not even for sausage?"
U-ju shook his head.
"How about a hot chocolate?" Song-hwa asked.
Her son looked back and gave her a nod. Dutifully, Song-hwa placed a kettle to boil.
"He really is out there to find that star, huh." Ik-jun remarked as he leaned back in his chair, looking at his wife's profile. The fire lit her face aglow, showing the mild flush on her skin for having a bit of beer. "I think I found mine."
"I think you've lost your mind," Song-hwa raised her brow.
"I think I may have!" Ik-jun scratched his head. "I know the perfect person who could help me with this."
"I'm not sure if I can help with the lice on your hair."
"Yeobo!" Ik-jun playfully whined. "The school nurse has cleared U-ju!"
"That's reassuring," Song-hwa ripped a packet of hot chocolate. "I was wondering why my head was feeling itchy."
"That's because off the top of your head, you thought I was charming." Ik-jun smugly replied as Song-hwa chuckled in reply.
On their own, these meaningless conversations could last for hours. In their younger days, Ik-jun remembered conversations with Song-hwa that lasted until sunrise. Her laughter fuelled him to hold a conversation that knew no end. From workplace madness to flirty little puns. When people warned him how marriage could change everything between them, Ik-jun was grateful that their conversations remained the same.
Tonight, Ik-jun felt young again. He hoped to talk with Seong-hwa for many sunrises.
"I can see it!" U-ju beamed just as Song-hwa handed his chocolate.
She angled her head, trying to catch his line of sight. "Is it the bright star over there?"
U-ju furrowed his brows. His eyes squinted at the horizon before returning to his astronomical map. "It's the star down from that bright star."
Truth be told, it was hard to distinguish which one was not a bright star. At their age, Song-hwa and Ik-jun felt their eyes saw everything sparkled bright in the sky. To distinguish one over the other was as difficult as learning which vein led to which artery. Thankfully, their son was patient enough to direct their attention to the bright star with a bluish hue.
"That's a beauty," Ik-jun sighed. "I mean all of them are beautiful."
"How come we don't see this in Seoul?" Song-hwa asked. "The last time we went stargazing, I remember seeing Orion's belt but not Canopus."
"Well…" U-ju smugly intervened as he started talking about the positioning of the earth which made Jeju an idea place to view these stars. Hearing their young son eloquently explain the foreign world of astronomy made Ik-jun and Song-hwa feel small. In a good way.
It was a wonderful reminder that there were still so many things they could learn and enjoy in life.
As U-ju discovered the world, Ik-jun and Song-hwa saw the world anew.
"Weren't you supposed to make a wish?" Song-hwa nudged, knowing that Ik-jun and U-ju would definitely change their tomorrow and the many days that would come after.
As U-ju said his wish, Jungkook wished that Yoongi wouldn't take this badly.
"Are you sure you should be talking to me?" Jungkook whispered.
"Who else should I talk to?"
"I dunno," Jungkook looked around. "You know how he gets jealous when it comes to you."
"It's his fault that his battery's dead or something."
"Yeah," Jungkook rolled his eyes. "He's been texting and waiting for your call ALL DAY."
"Things got busy with the photoshoot, meetings, wedding prep and now my mother finding out that I'm in town."
"Excuses, Jin-hyung," Jungkook spoke in loud exasperation.
As if hearing a blip in his Jin radar, the door studio opened to a weary Min Yoongi who just finished cleaning the dishes.
"Is that Jin?"
"Your Seokjinnie-senses are strong, Min Yoongi." Too strong, quite frankly.
Yoongi held his palm out and Jungkook surrendered his phone without protest. He watched Yoongi beeline for the recording booth, clutching on his phone tight. He shut the door and silence soon filled the studio. At that moment, Jungkook prayed that Jin puts up a good excuse.
"Hyung."
"Yoongi."
"Turn your camera on."
"I can't. My hands are full."
Yoongi sighed deeply
"Where are you?"
"Walking around." Jin clicked his tongue before saying his apologies to someone else. "More like––pushed around."
"Are you okay? You shouldn't be walking around Seoul alone."
Yoongi heard a sudden silence from Seokjin's end of the phone. A soft greeting came after before he heard a muted melody and another familiar voice.
"I guess you're not alone, hyung."
"Some chatty son-in-law leaked information to his clingy mother-in-law."
"Chatty?"
"Last I heard, this son-in-law talked his husband's ear off a few nights ago."
Yoongi smirked.
And then he heard, "Is that Yoongi?"
"It's the cute hostel host that talked a little too much to his mother-in-law."
Yoongi heard a hard slap and a pained whine.
"That's because you haven't even called him and you were too busy to make time! If I didn't speak to him, Yoongi might be feeling lonely in Jeju!"
"Are you lonely, Min Yoongi?"
"A bit." Yoongi licked the corner of his lips. "That's why you should show me your face."
"Wouldn't it be better if I just come home sooner?"
"Can you?" There's a tinge of need in Yoongi's voice.
Seokjin smirked. "You'll have to talk that out with my mother."
Yoongi laughed and heard Jin's mother beg for just an evening with her son.
"Please say 'no'." Jin begged.
"I don't want to make Mama sad."
"You're making me sad, Min Yoongi."
"Show me your sad face and I'll make you happy."
"Yoongi-yah."
"Seokjinnie."
"I'm being a dutiful son, here. She's got shopping bags slung on my arm."
"So you can't be a dutiful husband?" Yoongi teased. "Hyungie, it's a simple request."
"I've been a dutiful husband all day, Yoongi. I worked hard to find money to feed the kids. I picked up the stuff in your studio. Did more work at the office. Met Ik-jun's sister who also happens to be the girlfriend of my dad's heart surgeon."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah! She came just when my mom was snooping around at Hybe! Mom met her, heard what we were up to, and now Mom's excited to have another wedding in the house."
"Even if it's not her son's?"
Jin laughed. "If she had her way, she'd plan commitment ceremonies every year."
Yoongi smiled. His tiredness from washing all those dishes eased.
"Yoongi-yah. I'd be happy to show my face but it's really hard to take things out of my pocket right now."
"Sorry I forgot to charge my phone."
"We should be grateful that Jungkookie was around."
Yoongi smirked.
"He's been great that he earned his place in the futon tonight."
Jin laughed. "He'll need some cuddles."
"I'll give him some."
"But not too much."
"Got it."
Even without seeing Jin's face, Yoongi could imagine the wrinkles by the edges of his cheeks as he smiled wholeheartedly.
"What else are you doing tonight, Jinnie?"
"I don't know. I'm quite sure mom will drag me for dinner at home. I actually forgot something in the office so I'll have to get back there too."
"Do you think you could call me after?"
"You should sleep, sweetie."
"I can wait," Yoongi groaned.
"Then please wait until I get home tomorrow." Jin said sweetly. "I know you've had a long day. Rest up, alright?"
"So should you," Yoongi replied softly.
The silence that came after felt like a warm embrace.
The morning came with much anticipation.
Haru was surprised to see Yoongi scrambling in the kitchen first thing in the morning. She had been so accustomed to see Jin awake first but without the eldest, Yoongi took charge and it was quite amazing.
An assembly of dishes were already on the table. Spam. Fried Eggs. Some banchan. Piping hot rice sprinkled with roasted flavoured seaweed that Haru recalled buying from one of Jin's regular ahjummas at the market. Warm brewed coffee was in the carafe leaving bitter notes in the air. Succulent slices of tangerine sank in a jug of squeezed orange juice. There was also slices of bread and a tray of butter and jam. The breakfast spread was unlike the healthy offerings Jin made. Nonetheless, the guests all loved it.
By the time Jungkook woke up to help for breakfast, Yoongi was already feeling smug with all the compliments he received from the guests. Beyond making spam egg and rice concoctions, some had fun making their breakfast into a gimbap. Others mixed spam and jam in their breads. Jungkook hopped in and made a couple a golden gimbap with sheets of egg, spam and jam.
While people played with their breakfast, Yoongi slipped back to the kitchen and turned to Haru. "You think you and Jungkook could manage things for a while? I'm heading out to pick up Jin."
"I can do that," Haru unknowingly suggested until she noticed Yoongi's persistence as he shook his head. "But I guess you should do it."
"We won't take long," Yoongi explained.
"If you two took a detour, I wouldn't surprised."
Yoongi looked at Haru with furrowed brows.
"You two deserve a break?"
"Oh."
"What were you thinking!?"
"Naughty things," Jungkook quipped from behind with a plate of golden gimbap for Haru. "Just go." He pushed Yoongi towards the door. "On your way back, get us that nice yuzuade from that pretty cafe down by the beach."
"The flowers should arrive by the time I get back."
"It should be!" Jungkook groused. "You're picking up the most beautiful flower of the lot."
Yoongi smugly grinned as he picked up his car keys. "Don't forget to take out the slabs of pork, beef, and set up the grill."
Jungkook showed a finger heart to Yoongi. Haru told him to take care.
As soon as the main door shut, Haru leaned on the counter and asked, "Is he always like this?"
"Like what? Pining?"
Haru smirked. "I was about to say cute but yes, his heart is definitely elsewhere."
"They've always been like that since they became roomates." Jungkook popped a golden gimbap in his mouth. "It escalated to cheesier levels when they got together."
"I honestly felt like was intervening when I suggested that I'd pick up Jin."
Jungkook laughed. "Yoongi has learned from his regrets. He does what he wants these days."
Putting things together, Haru realised what Yoongi wanted the most.
Whether that was Seokjin or not, Yoongi was suddenly sure.
Yoongi received a message that perturbed him as the intersection lights turned green. He tried to drive but started second guessing if he had read the right message. While Jin sent his flight details the night before, Yoongi wondered why a new number just texted him, telling that he was Kim Seokjin and that he would be checking in at the hostel soon with four other people.
Could it be?
Was it possible?
Yoongi blinked and scrunched his eyes. He tried not to entertain the idea until he drove by the airport arrival and saw a man who looked quite like his husband. This man looked cool with his hair swept up and his wayfarers just tipping at the bridge of his nose. His shoulders were wide against the cinched waist of his black suit. It didn't help that he looked sexy slinging that covered wardrobe over his shoulder. Or that the collar around his neck teased a charming adam's apple. How the lines from his neck drew towards his beautiful jaw, his pretty lips, his cute ears, and his adorable cheeks.
What Yoongi thought, as he parked and stepped out of his car, was that this man is very handsome and was none other than his husband.
"Seokjin-ah!" He called.
"Ah! Min Yoongi-nim!" the man responded. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I did say I'd pick you up."
"You did?" the man scrunched his brows. "I just texted to say we were about to check in the hostel. I guess we're lucky to be picked up!"
He turned towards his group who nodded happily.
"I'm Kim Seokjin, by the way," the man spoke with a bow. "These are my friends. Seok-hyung, Jun-wan, Ik-sun, and Andrea."
Yoongi took notice of the people behind Kim Seokjin and was more confused that he introduced himself and referred to one of the men as Andrea. The crew also seemed to have carried a couple of guitars, maybe a piano and an amplifier.
"So should we just put our luggage at the back?" Andrea asked.
Yoongi nodded, his eyes refusing to move away from Kim Seokjin.
The rest of the group settled in the car while Kim Seokjin took shotgun after winning a game of rock-paper-scissors. Yoongi felt more confused as this Seokjin sat and looked uneasy in his seat.
"You can adjust the seat if you like," Yoongi said.
"I'm fine, Mr. Min," Seokjin replied. Yoongi raised a brow. "Andrea's got long legs."
"I see." Yoongi took note of how Seokjin was almost crouched in his seat. Everyone else started seemed comfy at the back as soon as they finished placing their luggage at the back of his car. Too comfy even when they were all dressed in their suits. They continued to chat with Seokjin about things that they would do in Jeju. Jun-hwan was quick to ask about the best places to eat. Seokjin turned to Yoongi and ask, "Do you know of good places to eat eel?"
"Excuse me?" As far Yoongi was concerned, it was Jin who knew where to best eat eel in Jeju. He looked at Jin with utmost confusion but it was difficult to unpack that innocent handsome face.
"Mr. Min?"
"Uhm…" Yoongi took his phone out and started sliding to his messages.
"Are you okay?"
"Uhm…" He felt his heart race as this Seokjin leaned closer. "I was actually waiting for someone else."
"Oh!" Seokjin pulled back. "Sorry if I misread your greeting earlier."
"It's fine," Yoongi cleared his throat. "You're our guest so it's my pleasure to accommodate you. It was just that I was also supposed to pick up my partner."
"Did you arrange to pick him up?"
Yoongi turned to Seokjin. His cheeks mildly heating up. "No. I wanted to surprise him."
Seokjin hummed pleasantly.
"So, what brings you to Jeju?" Yoongi asked as he started the car.
Andrea leaned to the middle. "We're here for a wedding."
That explained the suits.
"We're in a band so we're performing for a wedding," spoke Seok-hyung.
That explained the instruments.
"What instruments do you play?" Yoongi asked as he turned for the highway.
"Keyboards," said Seok-hyung.
"Lead guitar," said Jun-hwan.
"We also have a bassist and a rhythm guitarist," answered Andrea. "I play drums."
"That's awesome," Yoongi said. "Would you like to borrow my drum kit?"
"I was quite ready to play drums on my ipad but yes, I'd appreciate it if I could borrow the drum kit." Andrea snickered.
"And what about you?" Yoongi turned to the person beside him. "Are you also in the band?"
"I sing vocals," Seokjin said. "But not for their band."
Yoongi furrowed his brows.
"My bandmates are elsewhere."
"Is that so?"
Seokjin nodded, turning his gaze to Yoongi. "Have you heard of Coldplay?"
That remark earned a hard click of a tongue. "Seokjin-ah."
"YAH!" Seokjin whined with a chuckle.
"Don't you dare do that to me again," Yoongi hissed. "I honestly thought you were a different guy."
Seokjin laughed. "Did you fall in love with me all over again?"
Yes. Yoongi thought. But he wouldn't admit that to this bastard who played with his heart.
"I take it you used their phone to contact me?"
"That I did," Seokjin answered.
"But did you seriously bring another band to Ik-jun's wedding?"
"Well, their band's missing members," Jin said.
"We need to pick up our bassist and lead vocalist at the wedding," Jun-hwan said.
"Those two should arrive around lunch," Jin added leading to the story of how this band got together and the long romance between Ik-jun and Song-hwa.
All this talk left Song-hwa sneezing.
"Here," Ik-jun quickly took out the nasal spray for Song-hwa's first-aid kit.
She took a couple of pumps while Ik-jun carried his son in his arms.
"Are you sure you want to take the wheel?" Ik-jun said as he sat the sleepy U-ju in the backseat of the car. Her son was fast asleep and Ik-jun could barely keep his eyes open.
In a surprising turn of events, Ik-jun didn't talk to Song-hwa til morning. Instead, he found a companion with his sun who was thrilled to see more stars and almost trace a galaxy across the Jeju sky. Ik-jun was pleased to learn from his son and share nuggets of stories in between. He talked about how he missed the stars when he was a medical student. How he felt the stars were sometimes not in his favour. And how they all lined up at a perfect time. As the sun rose to cover the stars in light, Ikjun and U-ju basked in the warmth of all the stars. While Song-hwa didn't mind missing out on this family conversation, she too wondered how the stars played in her life. How it always kept Ik-jun close to her, like a planet that faithfully followed its orbit.
With all their camping gear packed in and on the vehicle, Song-hwa strapped her seatbelt while Ik-jun collapsed beside her. He leaned on her shoulder as she started the car. She turned to put the seatbelt on him, leaving him to rest on her shoulder as the scenery around her window shifted from the lush greens of this camp to the emerald waves of the coast. She rolled her window down and let the cool spring air blow comfort to her loved ones. As they took rest, she hummed a song out of note, excited what else the day would offer as their commemorate their lives as a family together.
Song-hwa didn't imagine that it would come with an immense floral trail leading them towards the lawn of their hosts.
She swore she heard some drums and strumming.
She was quite certain that something delicious was being cooked.
She patted Ik-jun who immediately wiped the drool off his face.
"Is it my call time yet?" He asked.
"Maybe," Seong-hwa unlatched her seatbelt. "Didn't we say we'll just have a simple lunch and photos?"
Ik-jun profusely blinked, processing all the flowers he was seeing. U-ju roused in the backseat and turned to find tons of flowers outside the window.
"Is it spring?" U-ju asked while Ik-jun stepped out to hear the strumming of their favourite song.
There was laughter from afar. A few chords strung to play a melody that made Song-hwa sing a lyric. Out of tune.
"Is it supposed to sound that way," U-ju said as he slipped into his father's arms as he carried him out of the car.
"Is it that bad?" Song-hwa teased U-ju.
"Mommy just needs some tuning," Ik-jun sang the first few notes on tune, encouraging Song-hwa to hit the right note. As they walked towards the entrance of the hostel, Song-hwa kept her gaze at Ik-jun, mimicking his lips as he repeated the correct note. When Yoongi opened the door for them, U-ju now joined to help Song-hwa get the right note. Their eyes locked with each other, unaware of the smile on people's faces as they walked down the hall and towards the living room. They didn't notice Jungkook and Haru dressing a mannequin with Song-hwa's wedding dress nor did they even notice how cute Jin looked wearing a frilly apron as he cooked.
But what they did notice was the moment when Seong-hwa finally hit the right note. U-ju's eyes sparkled while Ik-jun's smile widened. They heard the strum of the guitars continue and they sang the next lines together. In tune.
At least until, Jung-hwa shouted "HEY! IF WE'RE DOING THIS RIGHT, WE NEED THE VOCALS AND THE BASSIST!"
Only then did Ik-jun, Song-hwa, and U-ju noticed what surrounded them. They stood on a trail of dahlias and forget-me-nots which led them to the lawn where flowers that signified true love decorated a tent where their friends stood with their instruments.
"YOU ALSO NEED TO DRESS THE PART," Andrea shouted.
Yoongi directed their attention to the living room where there was a mannequin with a wedding dress and two suits were hung on a rack. The dress was simple yet it had a puffy skirt that lit U-ju's eyes.
"ARE WE GETTING MARRIED!?" U-ju beamed excitedly to his parents who answered him with a warm, if not a bit embarrassed, "Yes."
Dresses and suits were worn. Vows were also resaid.
Songs were sung throughout their delicious lunch and countless memories were captured with a click of a button. As golden hour hit, the Lee family were by a field canola flowers on the verge of blooming. They looked towards the coast along Seopkoji. Their faces were bright and warm against the afternoon sun. From time to time, the wind would blow their hair or their clothes. Sometimes, their friends would jump in between shots. At all times, they laughed and smiled. At one moment, when her veil got blown towards the sea, Song-hwa laughed in tears.
Click after click, one location after another, Yoongi and Jungkook captured their happy moments. Jungkook took the role of director and videographer while Yoongi snapped every second of their special day.
Seokjin and Haru were the designated drivers and hype men. They mostly stood behind but would occasionally approach the couple to help retouch their makeup or, Jin in particular, give U-ju tips on how to pose handsomely in front of the camera.
In between the joy and the madness, Seokjin paid attention to how Yoongi held his camera. It had been a while since Yoongi took out his DSLR. The last time he'd seen Yoongi snap photos with that camera was during their private holiday in Spain. Otherwise called as honeymoon by Kim Taehyung.
Seokjin fondly recalled how Yoongi snapped photos of different architecture and art. His back, mildly hunched, to keep his hands steady to focus. His breath controlled to avoid any shake that would blur the details. The love and attention Yoongi had on that trip continued as he took one photo to the next.
"Did you find a fitting photo for our gift," Seokjin peeked over Yoongi's shoulder. Yoongi locked back, noticing the styling on Jin's hair disappear with a blow of the wind. He popped a battery in his camera before turning to his partner to fix what was left of his once long hair.
"Is this why you refused to show me your face yesterday?" Yoongi said, before catching Jin's playful wink.
"Did you fall in love with me again?" Jin teased.
Yoongi raised his camera and took a photo of Jin.
"Yes. Is it wrong to love you more?"
It definitely wasn't.
There wasn't anything wrong for love to grow. By the minute. Or exponentially. Like stars exploding to create a galaxy.
When so much love was caught on camera…
…it was difficult for Ik-jun and his family to leave the next day. They were the last guests of No. 7 until the next group possibly arrives in the afternoon. Their steps were hesitant to move forward. U-ju, in particular, clung on to Jin's neck.
"U-ju, we need to go home to see your friends tomorrow." Ik-jun pleaded as he tried to pull U-ju off Seokjin.
"But I won't be seeing Seokjinnie for a while," U-ju reasoned as his embraced when his dad managed to pry him off Seokjin.
"I'll see you when we're in Seoul." Seokjin said. "We still need to give you your edited photos and videos."
"Is that a promise?" U-ju stretched his pinky finger to Seokjin.
"Of course." With a small smile, Jin wrapped his pinky with U-ju.
Goodbyes were difficult when so much love wants to be expressed.
As Yoongi and Jin watched the couple and their friends say goodbye, Jin rested his chin on Yoongi's shoulder.
"This is getting harder by the day."
"And we only have a few days left." Yoongi patted Jin's fluffy morning hair.
"I'm really starting to enjoy this, Yoongi-yah."
"That's because you genuinely love making people happy."
"So do you." Jin tipped his head against Yoongi's. "Do you have any news who's next?"
"Definitely not your doppleganger."
Jin sighed. "Would have loved to see your doppleganger."
"And then what?"
"Live the dream." Jin teased with a snicker.
"Aren't you living the dream?"
"How can this be a dream when this is as real as it gets." Jin slipped his arms around Yoongi's waist. Yoongi leaned back. Comfortably.
"I only received a text last night that we have four guests coming in a little before lunch."
"Should we get lunch ready?"
"We can ask Jungkook to start cooking the rice." Yoongi tugged Jin's arm. Jin refused to let go as he called Jungkook.
He called once. Twice. He looked back giving Yoongi a chance to escape from his embrace.
"Maybe he went back asleep."
"I swear I just saw him by the lawn."
"So where did Jungkook go?"
Yoongi and Jin looked at each other, wondering if Jungkook that was just with them was real.
