Work Text:
Obi-Wan hummed. He quite loved his job. Being a bodyguard was enjoyable. He didn't have to socialize too much, he wasn't expected to play nice, and he often got to relax.
Especially with his current employers. He quite liked Rex and Cody. They were good actors, and decent people. They were a little more arrogant and than the average person, and a bit out of touch of what 'normal' living was like, but they were genuinely good people who tried not to let their fame get to their head.
In fact, though Obi-Wan rarely liked to admit it, he was quite in love with the both of them. But he would never even hint towards that. It wasn't professional.
And they didn't even like him anyways. They hadn't picked him out, someone else did.
And Obi-Wan didn't fit the image of a bodyguard they had in their mind. He looked more like a nerd, even when he dressed in gym gear, than a bodyguard. They thought that he would fail at his job, but the agent who hired him insisted he had a fantastic resume.
Obi-Wan did in fact have a fantastic resume. He studied many of the martial arts, and when he wasn't traveling with Cody and Rex, he was teaching classes, mostly to kids. He did fencing and real sword fighting for fun.
He was in fantastic shape, but he never showed it off because he was always professional around Rex and Cody. They had no clue.
It didn't matter. They tolerated his presence, and Obi-Wan performed his job to the best of his abilities.
Not that he had any real reason to use his skills. He mostly did the ward off crowds and act as security thing, which just about anyone could do reasonably, though it was harder for him because he wasn't intimidating.
While Rex and Cody got the make up done and started practicing their lines, Obi-Wan joined the other bodyguards on duty and settled in with a book.
Just another day in his life.
.
Rex glanced out at their bodyguard. Legal name Ben, preferred to be called 'Obi-Wan' for some reason. Where ever that came from. He turned back to Cody.
"He's reading again. Are we sure he's actually a trained bodyguard?"
Cody sighed. "That's what he claims. We just have to wait. He signed a two year contract, and we're only a year into it, remember?"
Rex groaned. "We're never letting someone else hire our bodyguard for us ever again."
"Definitely not." Cody agreed.
Both turned to other their job before they could get into more discussion.
They were in the middle of filming a rather tricky scene. Trying to get it right over and over again.
They broke for dinner and came back for it. It was still just not working right.
All the while, Obi-Wan was on duty, waiting for something to come up.
And neither Cody nor Rex wanted to admit that even though he was a terrible choice for bodyguard, they thought he was pretty great as a person, both of them harboring a crush for him.
.
Obi-Wan yawned. He had been battling insomnia, and these long hours were starting to get to him on top of that. But he could handle his job, no matter how sleep deprived he was. He could do what was necessary even on days of no sleep. It had been necessary at one point. He had spent five years in the military before deciding it was definitely not for him. Being able to function on no sleep was necessary.
On this job, it certainly became necessary. He put away his book. It was time for a vigorous walk that would double as checking around the area to be sure there weren't anyone around.
He found a drunken man trying to enter the building. Obi-Wan crossed his arms unimpressed.
"Leave before I call the police."
"I can take you!"
"Don't try me."
"I just want to see them!"
"Who?"
"My son!"
"Ah, you must be Jango Fett." Obi-Wan looked him up and down. He could see the resemblance, but where Cody was put together and proud of his appearance, Jango had let himself go.
"Let me in!"
"No. Now leave." Obi-Wan stared him down coldly. "Or I will use force and call the police."
Jango lunged.
Obi-Wan stepped to the side. Jango fell to the floor and tried to swing at Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan just stopped him and flipped him onto his back.
Jango groaned.
Obi-Wan smirked and picked him up, dropping him over his shoulder. He called the police as he moved Jango further away. Then, after he dropped him onto the bench, he called Rex and Cody to inform them.
"Guy looking for his son just tried to break in and he attacked me." Obi-Wan explained matter of factly. "I called the police. They should hopefully be here within thirty minutes."
"Are you hurt?" Cody asked.
Obi-Wan rolled his eyes. "He didn't land a single punch. He was too drunk for that."
"Oh, I see." Cody was silent a moment. "Will we be needed?"
"Depends on what the police say. I'll keep you updated."
"Alright, thank you."
"Good bye."
.
"Bye." Cody stared at his phone in confusion. "Hey, Rex, we can get access to the security footage, right?"
"Yeah? What happened?"
"Obi-Wan says he just stopped a drunk guy from breaking in and the drunk guy didn't land a single hit."
"Oh, well that's... strange." Rex frowned. "I don't like the sound of that."
"Me either. Want to look?"
Both of them were happy they had such prominent roles in this project, that they were so heavily involved in the production, not just acting. They hurried to find the security footage and gaped at what they found.
"That's so smooth," Rex whispered in awe. "Couldn't have done it better if it was scripted."
"...I think we've been underestimating him." Cody stared at it some more. "I guess he is worth the money after all."
.
Obi-Wan supposed he must have proved something about his skills because Cody and Rex had warmed up and treated him nicer. They still weren't friendly, but that was okay. It was a job and they were all professionals. No need to muddy the waters.
No matter how much Obi-Wan thought he'd like to get to know them properly and spend time with them and... Well. He was in love, after all.
Then came the day it all came crashing down.
They were at a fancy dinner for some promotion or another. Obi-Wan didn't bother keeping track anymore. It was more hassle than it was worth.
He just showed up, did his job, and went home at the end of the night.
This time... this time things went differently.
There were sudden gunshots.
Obi-Wan exploded into action and grabbed Cody and Rex to drag them to a more defendable position.
They didn't fight his grip, too stunned by the turn of events.
Obi-Wan stood in front of them, ready to fight.
"What are you doing?" Rex hissed. "Are you insane?"
Obi-Wan gave him a determined look. "I am doing my job. Protecting you two. The best option you have is me standing here, not hiding with you. I know what I'm doing."
"You could die!"
"That's part of the job description," Obi-Wan replied lightly. "Better me than you."
He missed the stunned looks on their faces. The thought had not occurred to them.
Obi-Wan narrowed his eyes on the gunman when he appeared. He purposefully drew his attention and then exploded into action.
His military training was apparent, as was his extensive experience with martial arts.
The gunman panicked, and it was only his panic that had a shot land.
Obi-Wan hissed at the pain that exploded in his left shoulder. But this wasn't his first gunshot wound. Instead, he pushed forward and knocked the gun out of his hand before knocking the gunman out with a well timed kick that knocked him into the wall.
Obi-Wan sat down, breathing deliberately through the pain as he pressed one hand to the wound in his shoulder. It wasn't terrible, at least.
He was startled by both Cody and Rex appearing and checking on him, talking over each other with worry about him dying.
"I'm not dying. It's barely even lodged in there, almost missed me completely." Obi-Wan stared at them when they completely ignored him and continued babbling.
"Seriously. I've been in active combat before. This is nothing."
They continued to ignore him and hover over him.
"Why do you even care you don't even like me!"
...well that got their attention.
"What? Of course we like you."
"You've made it clear from day one you don't like me."
Cody realized first. "Oh... we didn't approve of you as our bodyguard, but we're very fond of you in general. You're a great guy. My type.Wait. What?" Cody ducked his head in embarrassment and looked around to see if anyone else heard.
Rex half laughed.
Obi-Wan stared at him with his mouth agape.
Cody was saved from further embarrassment by the authorities arriving.
.
Obi-Wan ended up resigning as their bodyguard when they finally confessed feelings, just so that they could date without it being weird. He took up teaching martial arts full time, with some paid classes, and some free classes.
