“This is going to be broadcast?” the albino woman with two looped braids asked as she crossed one leg over the other, careful not to crease her white slacks. Her top consisted of a ruffle neck sleeveless shirt in blue that was as pristinely kept as the rest of her. In fact, one could argue that nothing about her could be less then perfect; she held an air of unnatural superiority that could be felt even from behind the camera lens the camera man was operating.
“Yes,” answered a voice off camera as the camera angle adjusted to focus more on her.
“I...I don't think that's a good idea mistress,” a woman with a side ponytail timidly fretted, side eyeing the camera crew like they were some sort of vermin. “You want the whole world to know about your....uh, affliction?” another side eye here, as she carefully worded around the topic. The white haired woman had no such compuncture.
She shrugged. “It's been centuries Sayaka. Vampires are all the range now. Who wouldn't want to fuck a vampire?”
Sayaka blushed. “Mistress!” She opened her mouth to admonish the vampire but failed to do so.
In a separate room, with a white wall as background and clearly filmed at a later time, the woman spoke, “I'm doing all this because if Sayaka sees other people want to sleep with me, maybe she'll realize she wants to sleep with me too.”
“Uh....couldn't you ask her out?” the camera man asked.
She looked aghast at him. “Sayaka doesn't understand it when I ask her out normally. She takes it as a joke. Last time I hired a plane to write 'go out with me, Sayaka' in the sky and she looked at it and thought it was a cruel trick from God. So, this roundabout method is the only way.”
“Is that why you have her calling you mistress?”
The vampire huffed. “I've tried to get her to call me by my name but she refuses to do so. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.”
The camera cut back to the present. The vampire stood up from her chair and the camera followed after her as it panned to encompass the entirety of her mansion. The mansion was decorated with outlandishly garish items that looked as if they had been blindly picked out and put on display. Art pieces from various centuries hung haphazardly from the wall, vases and statues from different locations shoved into dusty corners, and rugs with dizzying patterns laid out on the floors.
Numerous gurgling fish tanks took up any available space, fish of variety swimming around in the water, blue light casting a wavering pattern onto the floors and walls.
Small knicknacks and what could almost pass as junk were laid out on any free surface- tables, desks, counters, and even seats. Even the windows were occupied either with decals plastered onto the glass, drawn curtains with tacky patterns, or boarded up entirely so no light could get through.
“My name is Kirari Momobami and welcome to a day in my life as a vampire,” Kirari said, spreading out her arms. She did a slight bow in front of the camera and the electricity flickered.
“Damn it,” she muttered to herself. “Wasn't this supposed to be fixed last week?” She turned to Sayaka. “Can we talk?” She took Sayaka gently by the elbow. “Excuse us a moment,” she told the camera crew and the two of them walked into a side room, leaving the door ajar.
The camera zoomed in to spy on them.
“What's going on?” Kirari hissed.
“We didn't pay the rent,” Sayaka told Kirari.
“Didn't pay the rent?” Kirari said. “I'm rich, how did we run out of money?”
Sayaka pulled out a black book and flipped through many pages containing numbers and red marks. “According to my records, your family was last rich in the 19th century. You've been barely scrapping by this past decade.”
Kirari's eyes widened. “How is that possible? Where did the money go?”
Sayaka cleared her throat. “There were a lot of expenditures over the years and you didn't work. And then you invested in bitcoin.”
Kirari smiled at that. “I thought it was a funny pun. Because I'm a vampire and I bite people,” she made fangs with her fingers and hissed at Sayaka who did not seem amused. “And bitcoin is called bitcoin and-”
“Yes, I get it mistress,” Sayaka said dryly.
Kirari's smile dropped. “How come you never told me about this before?”
“I tried to, but you were always 'busy'. I decided to take it upon myself to start a peach business so we could keep afloat. And we are, barely. We need to cut back on spending.”
A segment of Sayaka filmed separately appeared. She stared blankly at the camera. “I've worked with Kirari for ten years. I'm hoping she turns me into a vampire soon. I think I deserve it for putting up with her all this time. Her finances are awful. She spent a good chunk of her fortune on fish tanks and aquatic life, and then I'm stuck having to hire a team of cleaners. You might have seen them around the house. Sometimes she gets hungry and snacks on them and then I have to hire people to clean up that mess, and then hire people to clean up the people who know and then hire people to-” she cut herself off, letting out a tired sigh. “You get it.”
The next scene was one of Kirari giving the camera team a tour of the mansion. “Every morning I wake up at six pm. Sometimes in the winter time I wake up a bit earlier such as 3pm and stay up longer. All the windows are blocked to prevent sunlight from getting in. It is thanks to Sayaka, they are all protected. She also wakes me up, and helps me procure fresh blood. Don't get me wrong, I love biting on people's necks, but the easiest source of blood is from blood bags she gets. Much less messier although I do slip up sometimes and have cravings...” she trailed off as she noticed one of the maid's that was scrubbing the fish tank on the dining room table.
“Mistress,” Sayaka tugged on Kirari's sleeve to bring her back to the present.
“Right! Moving on, as you can see I have many fish tanks, several pairs in each room. The biggest one is in my bedroom. Most of the mansion is useless, since I don't need to eat or sleep, and since I can't entertain friends over. Therefore, I fill it with fish!” She let out a self depreciating laugh. “They can't run away from me.”
She quickly brushed over this, stepping into the living room where there were a few couches, all cluttered with cardboard boxes and throw blankets. “Sometimes the family comes to visit but I try to avoid having family gatherings. It becomes very messy.”
“Blood, everywhere. It is a nightmare to scrub out of the white walls,” Sayaka filled in helpfully.
“Yes, and not all of it is human,” Kirari clarified.
“Holy shit, what is that,” the camera man cried out as a ghostly face with black eyes and a smile passed by the corner of the room.
“Oh, that's Ririka,” Kirari said off hand. “She likes to walk around the house. Ignore her.”
“Ah!” cried out one of the camera crew and the camera followed to see what he was seeing. Ririka hissed and her back arched like a cat's.
“I said ignore her- don't look into her eyes,” Kirari cried out but it was too late. Ririka leapt at the man and began tearing into his neck. Blood jettisoned upwards. “Shit shit, run!” Kirari scooped Sayaka up into her arms and ran for it. The camera blurred and shook as the crew ran after her.
They didn't stop until they were inside Kirari's room. The camera crew were all breathing heavily.
“Are we safe here?” asked one woman only to yelp in horror when Ririka's hand shot through the door and grabbed her by the ponytail. The head was yanked back through the gap and her throat was bitten till blood sprayed free. It coated the camera.
“Holy shit-” the body dropped and then the door erupted as Ririka jumped the camera man. There were tearing noises and sounds of screams followed by silence. The camera laid on the floor as feet paced past it.
“Ririka, how many times have I told you, you can't come out when we have guests!” Kirari exclaimed, frustrated.
“...I was hungry,” Ririka said petulantly with some guilt.
“Exactly why I told you to stay inside.” Kirari sighed heavily. “Who is going to film me now?”
“We could ask Mary to do it.”
“No. We are not inviting your vampire hunter girlfriend here. Last time, and every time, she's tried to kill me.”
“She can't help it. It's her training,” Ririka defended.
“Why am I the only one in the family with good taste in women?” Kirari said, pointing at Sayaka.
Sayaka arched a brow. “You've never drank my blood, mistress.”
“Don't call me that, it's Kirari,” said with some exasperation. “And I wasn't talking about your blood.”
“And like that, you've lost me,” Sayaka intoned.
“Yes, your taste in women includes women who don't even see you romantically,” Ririka said.
Sayaka picked up the camera, wiping the blood off with a handkerchief she had. “I could finish the video and the submit it.”
“As usual Sayaka saves the day,” Kirari said with a proud smile.
“But not your love life,” Ririka muttered.
“I don't wanna hear that from you! Mary is your first girlfriend!”
“You don't even have one,” Ririka pointed out.
“I will soon enough,” Kirari said. “Unlike some people I like to take time to learn about the person before I fall in love with them.”
Cut to the white room, Kirari stared deadpan at the camera. “It took me ten minutes.”
“Can we focus on the film?” Sayaka interrupted. “I have work in the morning and I would like to have this done by then.”
“Yes,” Kirari nodded her head. “Now where were we...?”
“Ririka was eating the camera crew.”
Ririka looked down at one of the unmoving bodies. Her white shirt and pants were covered in blood, so was the mouth of her mask.
How she manged to bite anyone through the mask was a talent.
“Mary is not going to be happy with me. I broke the diet.”
“Stop whining. She doesn't need to know,” Sayaka said, pulling out her phone to speed dial the cleaners.
“Doesn't need to know what?” an annoying voice asked and they turned to see Mary had come into the room.
“How did you break into my mansion, again?” Kirari demanded angrily.
Mary held out the keys hanging from her fingers. “Ririka gave me the keys.”
“Ririka!” Kirari admonished. “You gave the vampire hunter free access to our place? That's like asking to get staked through the heart!”
“Actually, Ririka's really into 'staking'. We role-play that I'm going to kill her but I don't use a real stake, just a foam prop one.”
Kirari put her hands over her ears, disgusted by this information. “Really, Ririka?”
“Mary!” Ririka exclaimed, embarrassment coloring it's way through her mask. “What happens in the coffin, stays in the coffin.” Then she turned to Kirari. “As if you have a right to judge. I can hear you moaning about Sayaka!”
The camera cut to Ririka in the white room. Her mask was still stained though the blood had dried. “Because we're twins, we have a bunk bed coffin. It makes....sleeping arrangements awkward.”
“At least I don't defile the coffin every night!” Kirari shot back.
“Can we address the bodies in the room?” Mary asked, raising her converse up to find the sole soaked in blood.
“Ririka lost control!” Kirari pointed at Ririka.
“I wasn't trying to! It just happened. Kirari wouldn't let me out to feed and I wanted to get a quick snack from the fridge but the camera crew were there and...” at this Ririka's head bowed down in shame. Mary patted it.
“There, there. I'm sure you didn't mean it.”
“Oh, she gets head pats, but when I murder someone to drink their blood, you shoot me up with holy bullets!” Kirari exclaimed.
Mary glared at her. “Don't push your luck.” She opened up her hoodie to show the assortment of holy water bottles, crosses, and stakes strapped inside.
Kirari hissed and hid behind Sayaka.
“We'll be leaving,” Mary said and took Ririka away with her, no doubt to defile the coffin again.
Kirari wrinkled up her nose. “I won't be able to get the smell out for hours.”
“I'll clean it, don't worry,” Sayaka said. “Shall we continue with the video? I've been tapping the entire time.”
Kirari hopped out in front of Sayaka once more, clearing her throat. “Yes, we should continue. Should we take it from the top?”
“Not in this room,” Sayaka inclined her head to the mess on the floor. They picked their way gingerly across and went to the entrance hall of the mansion.
“Are you filming?” Kirari asked.
Sayaka put Kirari in frame and flashed a thumbs up.
“My name is Kirari Momobami and I am a 200 hundred year old vampire. Welcome to a day in my unlife,” she said cheerily.
The recording cut to a scene in the white room.
“Today is a special day which is why the video needs to come out nicely. It marks Sayaka's ten years of service,” Kirari said. “I'm going to gift her something special.”
The camera quickly turned around to Sayaka's face. She was breathing heavily into the lens, fogging them up. “She's going to make me a vampire.”
Off camera Kirari could be heard saying, “no, my girlfriend.”
The camera stayed on Sayaka's face showing her confused expression. “Since when-”
“Since you first started working for me. Why else did you think I never wanted to suck your blood.”
“Because I tasted bad?”
“No, because you're a snack and not a snack,” Kirari explained with some exasperation.
“I still don't get it,” Sayaka said deadpan.
Kirari let out an inhuman scream.
Footage of Sayaka sitting in the white room played. With a slightly scary grin on her face, she said, “yes, I've known Kirari's feelings for me for a long time. Yes, I play the idiot.” She smiled. “It's fun.”
“Do I hear screams of suffering?” a third voice asked. Sayaka turned the camera back to focus on the new person in their mansion. It was Yumeko. Kirari's estranged cousin.
“What are you doing here?” Kirari hissed.
“The door was unlocked.”
“That monster hunter forgot to lock it. I'm revoking her key privileges-”
“You work with a monster hunter?” Yumeko gasped. “How exciting. I want to meet her.”
“No, and get out of my mansion!” Kirari ordered.
Yumeko giggled. It wasn't a good sound. “Your mansion? It's mine now.”
Kirari made a surprised face and looked at Sayaka. “You sold the mansion?”
“I told you we were broke,” she defended.
“To Yumeko??? I would rather it turn into a brothel then be sold to her.”
“She was the only one who would by it, given all the....missing person cases on the premises,” Sayaka said.
“Those add character to the lot.”
Yumeko held up the deed to the mansion that she had pulled out of thin air. “I would be interested in gambling for it.”
“No,” Kirari said vehemently.
“If you don't, you'll have nowhere to live.”
“I'm already dead.”
“Where will Sayaka stay?” Yumeko said, tilting her head and smiling.
“She can sleep in the coffin with me.”
“The same one Mary and Ririka fornicate in? No thank you,” Sayaka said, disgust dripping from her voice.
“Oh?” Yumeko smiled that smile that meant bad things. “I wonder how the family will react to finding out Ririka is involved with the monster hunter on such a deep level.”
Those words struck fear into Kirari. Grandma Momobami could never find out, otherwise she would cull Ririka for such an act.
Kirari swallowed harshly. It would seem she had no choice but to gamble Yumeko. “You're the real monster here,” Kirari said, keeping her face as neutral as she could. Yumeko giggled.
“They don't call me a Jabami for no reason,” she said and pulled out a deck of cards from inside her sleeve. The sight of it made Kirari nauseous. She didn't want to gamble Yumeko; whenever she did tragedy only struck.
Kirari and Ririka had originally been triplets before their last and first gamble with Yumeko and now here Kirari was, forced to make another gamble with the demon for Ririka's safety.
“Name the game,” Yumeko said.
Sayaka zoomed in on Kirari's and Yumeko's face. Yumeko was smiling, eyes glowing red. Kirari felt paler than normal, undead heart squeezing in her chest. She tried to think of a game where she could possibly win with the least amount of room for error. Kirari opened her mouth and-
Kirari woke up with a scream, sweating and shaking. Sayaka was immediately sitting up with her. “What's wrong? Are you okay?” she asked in a groggy voice.
“I..I had a nightmare,” Kirari said, wiping a hand down her face. The adrenaline coursed through her veins and her hands shook a bit. Sayaka's comforting hand on her shoulder helped calm Kirari down.
“What happened in it?”
“I was a vampire,” Kirari winced at the horror of it, her wolf ears flattening against the top of her skull.
Sayaka snarled at that, canines jutting out. Vampires, their mortal enemies. It made her blood boil just thinking about it. When she had calmed down she spoke.
“Don't worry. You're a werewolf, nothing can change that,” Sayaka whispered in the dark of the bedroom.
Kirari continued on. “And you were human.”
Sayaka snarled again. That sounded horrible!
Kirari's voice grew more horrified. “And above all, you kept rejecting my love.”
Sayaka gasped at this. “I would never. Oh what a horrible dream.” She immediately covered Kirari's face in kisses, holding her by the chin. Kirari smiled into the tender motions.
She knew Sayaka loved her and would never let her go. It had just been a silly nightmare.
Sometimes, it was nice to be reminded that Sayaka did love Kirari unconditionally.
Kirari then leaned up to meet Sayaka's mouth halfway, sealing their lips together with a soft kiss.
