Two Halves of a Whole Idiot

Summary:

A nightmare causes Doffy to treat you differently.

Work Text:

There was something to be said about how he could fall asleep at the drop of a feather. Yet, you knew that his slumber was never peaceful. No creature could live a life of cruelty as he did and find solace in sleep. Be it the brutality dealt to him as a child or the barbarity he utilized to climb the ladder of power, Donquioxte Doflamingo could never rest in peace.

You had always been the one thing that brought him stability. Every marine slaughtered and city conquered, you were there at his side. When he arose in the mornings and laid down at night, you were there to chase away any harm that may come. If he were a ship, you were his anchor.

Doflamingo snapped out of his nightmare in a cold sweat. His eyes immediately went to your figure. He breathes a sigh of relief at the sight of you in a deep sleep. It had only been a dream. Yet, he couldn't shake the rage that crawled over him. Would you dare to betray him or leave his side?

Sensing that he woke up, you roll over and meet his gaze. He watched you blink away the sleep that still clouded your eyes and mind. A smile stretched your lips as you reached for him, but it faltered when he swatted your hand away. The man didn't give you time to react before he slid out of bed and left you confused. That was when it started. He offered no explanation.

Despite meaning so much to Doflamingo, you were still your own person. He didn't exercise control over you in any form. That is why his sudden action of sending Baby 5 with you when you went out raised your suspicions. The freedom you had grown accustomed to was suddenly taken away by the person you treasured more than anything.

His temper was shorter. His tolerance for anything outside of what he demanded was no longer existent. Everything that made him himself was slowly etching away. As weeks passed and his wrath reached new heights, you knew you had to do something.

It would only be you and him in the palace for the week. Questioning him while everyone was away would be the best approach and least risky. The staff served you both dinner. His hulking figure at the head of the table took up so much space that it felt suffocating.

“Is everything alright, Doffy,” you asked.

He didn't respond. Instead, he finished his meal and left you alone. You gave it another try after you completed your nightly routine. He locked himself in his office and refused your offer to accompany him. Your shared chambers felt empty as you tried to think what could have brought this sudden coldness over your lover. An answer never found you. Instead, you drifted to sleep.

Grunts and groans woke you. It had been a long time since you heard Doffy this way. Cautiously, you reached out and rested your palm over his heart. He hadn't had a nightmare in a long time. Doflamingo settled down as you crawled closer and straddled his waist. You softly caressed his face and watched as he relaxed. His hand shot up and gripped your wrist. A strangled cry of pain slipped past your lips at the harshness of his hold. However, he let go of your wrist and settled his hands on your waist as he woke up.

“You're here,” he sighed.

“Always,” you said, “Are you alright?”

“M'fine."

His hands slid from your waist to your thighs as you lay your body flat against his. Ear pressed above his heart; you listened as his heartbeat slowed.

“Talk to me,” you requested.

“I cannot allow betrayal."

Bolting upright and glaring down at him, you felt insulted.

“And who has betrayed you?"

“It was just a nightmare. I know better,” he said, “Go to sleep.”

It made sense to you now.

“I betrayed you in a nightmare,” you spoke, “and you start to act like an even bigger insufferable asshole in reality?”

“I said go to sleep."

In a flash, your palm connected with his cheek.

“You've been a complete dick for three weeks! Sending Baby 5 with me everywhere! Not talking to me! Yelling at everyone,” you shouted, “You're pathetic.”

The wind was knocked from you when he flipped over. You continued to glare up at him.

“You watch that fuckin mouth of yours,” he warned.

“I've killed for you, and you let a dream send you off the deep end? I've always opened my arms to you when you were troubled,” you seethe, “I'd burn countries in your name. Slaughter anyone who stood in your way. I'd die for you, and you think I'd betray you?”

Hearing you say those things gave him the comfort he didn't know he needed. Weeks of anger and annoyance went away in an instant. You had always chased away what haunted him. Never one to admit his wrongs, he leaned in and kissed you.

“You're a fuckin pussy,” you mumble against his lips, “I love you, Donquioxte Doflamingo.”

“As you should."

“I'll kill you if you ever do this shit again."

“How romantic,” he laughed.

You were two sides of the same coin. However, Doflamingo would be lost without you.
