Work Text:
The King of the Gerudo came to them with a smile on his face and promises of riches beyond their dreams.
Sharp and Flat, musical composers and loyal servants to the King of Hyrule, were not fooled by the saccharine grin for even a fraction of a second. There were no words and no actions the Beast King could come up with to compel the brothers to give into his demands. They were above bribery and they were above threats; the King of the Gerudo was foolish to think they would help him.
“He wishes for the powers of the Triforce, brother Sharp,” Flat said as he scurried around, gathering anything that could so much as hint to their research about the magical powers of the Royal Family.
“Ay, it is known. What do you think he’ll do with the knowledge of the research we put all the hard work into, brother Flat?”
Flat crushed the papers in front of him. “I suppose nothing good. At least nothing good for the King.”
“Then we are in agreement? That this is the correct thing to do?” Sharp asked. He stood over the large fire pit, the flames painting his face orange.
“I have no doubt this is the correct action. I’d rather lose it all then give that blight on this land the power to control time.”
Sharp gave him a quick nod and without hesitation, began dropping all written records of their work into the fire. Every bit of knowledge they had gathered on the powers of Hyrule would never leave their possession. They would never let if fall into the hands of evil. The fire dimmed for a bit, almost suffocating from to the overwhelming amount of paper dropped on it, but it eventually managed to rise again. It burned years of the brother’s work but it also burned the ambitions of the Gerudo King. They could ask for nothing more.
It was clear to them the Goddess Din approved of their actions for she never let fire die out despite how much was thrown into the pit.
“He will not be pleased, brother Flat.”
“I care not for the feelings of the Beast, brother Sharp,” Flat said as he continued to throw things into the flames. They would leave nothing to him. Absolutely nothing.
“I am glad we both feel the same way, brother,” Sharp said.
“I know what is to come next,” Flat said as he placed a hand over Sharp’s shoulder, “but before that happens, I want to take this moment of reprieve to say it was an absolute honor to work with you.”
Sharp smiled, “It was honor to compose with you. I could not have asked for a better partner or a better brother.”
“To Hyrule.”
“To Hyrule and to our souls that we may yet see to his demise.”
The King of the Gerudo returned to them with a roar and the pain of a sharp sword but he left without the secrets he so desperately desired.
