Work Text:

“You’re leaving?”

“Sorry, kiddo. A whole world awaits me out there.” Tyki’s hand was warm upon Kanda’s head, and it made Kanda’s heart flutter in a way it had been doing more and more recently.

-

Kanda had once asked his doctor during a regular health check up what those feelings could possibly be. He thought that maybe he was dying. That maybe he had gone without listening to Tiedoll for too long and not eating enough had finally caught up with him. But doctor Edgar Chang Martin had just laughed. And the way he tried to cover the peels of laughter, he knew it was wrong, but couldn’t contain it either way.

Kanda let him have his laugh because in the end the man did explain what Kanda’s feelings truly were. Though, what he heard, he couldn’t really grasp. But like with all things he didn’t fully understand, he deemed it nonsense.

Love.

Just the word alone seemed stupid. And when doctor Chang tried to better explain it by means of, “Well, love is the way I feel about doctor Tui Chang,” the words alone meant nothing. The visuals were a lot more clear. When Tui walked into the room at those words and the two began to fawn over one another -- Kanda simply refused to believe he could ever act like that, especially toward Tyki.

-

He batted Tyki’s hand away, and when the older boy tried to ruffle his hair again Kanda threatened him by way of a mouth filled with very sharp teeth. But Tyki was used to it and he laughed.

“I’ll miss you most of all, Yuu.” Tyki was all teasing which always annoyed Kanda. Now, more than ever because he knew those words were probably not true.

Kanda folded his arms and scoffed. “I won’t miss you.” He ignored the way his cheeks felt warm despite the oncoming winter chill.

And Kanda stood there on the pavement as Tyki took his bags and hopped into a fancy car his older brother, Sheril, had bought for him on his sixteenth birthday. And now that he was eighteen, Tyki could finally move away and be independent like he’d always talked about.

Kanda wouldn’t admit it to anyone other than himself, but he wished that he could move away with Tyki too. But he was stuck at home with his overbearing father, and annoying brothers -- Marie was fine though -- for another nine years before he could get that kind of freedom. So he stood on the pavement and watched Tyki drive away into a world too big to ever guarantee they would see each other again. And Kanda ignored the clenching feeling in his chest, because whatever doctor Chang said about love, Kanda could only feel like he was dying.
