Work Text:
The fresh air of the training ground was quite calming to Kris, indeed, the only place he wouldn’t get hassled by the other monsters. Hacking and slashing the dummy, practicing away, Kris was thinking of the day he is free from the Underground, oh how much he dreamed to be out of this nightmare of a place. Truly, the only reason he even wants to keep on living and is determined to do whatever it takes to be finally free.
“But before I can even try escaping this treacherous hell hole, I need to get stronger when I get out. Who knows what's behind those barriers.” Kris thought to himself.
Yes, this awful kingdom of monsters who only abused him for being half-human, it wasn’t his fault but they couldn’t care about what the truth was. Monsters, most of them, are truly the worst kind of creatures to live with.
Don’t judge but they are the first to do it.
A deep secret hatred he had for them, oh how he wanted them all to die.
At least the ones that hurt him.
With his thoughts getting worse and worse about the monsters, each hit spiked with anger in him.
“well, kid, one more hit and you’ll break the dummy. then there won’t be much to hit anymore.” said a familiar voice.
This startled Kris and he turned towards the voice, to find it was his older brother Olen. Well, could have been worse, Olen was one of the few monsters he was pretty neutral with. He didn’t hate him, but he didn’t care for him either.
“What do you want Olen, I’m a bit busy if you can see,” Kris said nonchalantly.
“Just watching is all, you seem to be bottling a lot of emotions to be destroying the dummy.”
Kris flinched when Olen pointed at the dummy basically ripped into pieces and the head barely hanging on. Could he read his mind? No, that wouldn’t be possible, but then again, he doesn’t know much about Olen and what powers he holds. It’s best to be careful next time.
“I was only improving my sword skills, can’t be getting rusty if anything happens.”
“Are you throwing a jab at me?” Olen said
“What? No that wasn’t my intention-”
“i’m kidding, yeah i know i’m a lazy bone.” Olen snickers
Kris rolled his eyes but was glad Olen didn’t take offense to what he said, he didn’t want to deal with a monster rage for now.
“but that doesn’t mean i’m weak you know.” Olen says
Olen throws a power blast from one of his potions at Kris, it gets slashed by the half-human.
“huh good reflexes, let us see what you got brother.”
Olen disappears and goes right behind Kris, he tries hitting him with one of his blasters but Kris' reflexes help him to dodge.
What is he trying to do? Is he trying to hurt me or prove something to me? All I wanted to do was practice by myself for a little bit.
Kris brought up one of his blasters, aiming at the teleporting skeleton. Olen was a quick one and Kris has always known, but he also knew he was just as powerful as he was.
—-------------------------
Olen wanted to know more about his human brother, he would stalk him from afar and had a weak spot for him. He didn’t like how he was treated by the monster, he didn’t deserve it, but he didn’t want to do anything that could make Kris feel like he was weak and needed help. He knew better than to not stick his nose where it doesn’t belong.
A secret he’ll never tell him, because how could he? He already knew how much he hated monsters, let alone a monster helping him out with his problems.
Dodging all of the blasters from Kris, he couldn’t help himself but enjoy this moment with him. Sure, he knew his brother was full of rage, but he wanted to know more about Kris, he wanted to connect with his brother.
“How come you’re not doing your guard duty? Undyne will try taking it away from you again.” Kris says while shooting at Olen or at least hoping to get a hit.
“i didn’t want to today, why do such a boring task when nothing has ever happened.” Olen lifted one of his hands which made Kris go up and around in circles.
Kris seemed like he wasn’t fazed, he was still aiming the blasters at Olen but it was clear that he was struggling.
“Why do I have a hard time believing such words?” Kris questioned him but the skeleton only shrugged.
“Believe what you want to believe, that’s your choice, Kris.”
He drops Kris on the ground since he was running out of magic holding him up, which gave Kris the chance to get closer to him.
—--------------
Kris quickly ran up to Olen and threw some punches, he was far superior in that field but Olen could hold his own and would dodge them as much as possible. Then Kris grabs his sword but Olen blocks it with his staff.
Olen, what did he want from him? What is it? They’ve been battling for a while but he didn’t go out of his way to hurt him. He could have before if he truly wanted to. So what was his goal? Kris couldn’t understand.
Yet, he didn't want this battle to end, he couldn’t believe it but he was having fun.
“You’re smiling,” Olen said, this got Kris off guard. He quickly backed up and looked at Olen.
He saw his reflection on his sword, he was right, and a smile was on his face.
Then laughter.
He was laughing and having fun.
How odd.
He fell on his back on the grass and couldn't stop laughing. His stomach was hurting and his mind was madly confused as to why he was feeling the way he was.
Olen sat next to him and joined him in the laughter.
Two brothers, two different secrets, two people laughing.
One half-human was full of hatred for monsters and wanted nothing but death from them. Yet he was laughing with his monster brother, one who held a secret of following him and wanting to help him but never did.
Soon to be what destroyed what little bond they had.
But that’s for later, for now, it was time to grasp what the universe has offered them.
