3. Cypher

Summary:

Eli had been right all along. The answer was all in the numbers.

Work Text:

Numbers swarmed up in his room, on tons and tons of paper sheets placed on his desk, bed, walls. Ever since they’d learnt of the siege of Lothal’s unfortunate ending, Eli would spend every free minute locked up in the room, adding numbers to his endless calculations.

Eli had tracked down the lane the purrgil would have most likely taken, the planets they would have crossed. It all clicked into place at once. Mathematics was in everything. Like a cypher, it contained all the secrets Eli could ever want to know. Now the only thing left was for him to draft a cypher of his own.

What art meant to Thrawn, mathematics was to Eli. If Ar’alani hadn’t grasped this already, then her latest meeting with the human certainly got the message across.

“Are you sure he’ll be able to read that?”

They’d send an encrypted message to the most likely planets of Thrawn’s residing. They would encrypt them well, so that no one else could get ahold of the contents. And most important of all, they would tell no one about this.

“I don’t think it matters if he does,” Eli answered honestly, “What matters is, he’ll know the message was from us. And he’ll know to reply. And when he does…”

“We’ll be there to get him.”

A smile flashed across Eli’s face. One way or another, he would find Thrawn.
