Warmth

Work Text:

Warm rays of morning sun tickled the gentle skin of Phoenix‘ closed eyelids, waking him up slowly. His eyes took a moment to adjust to the bright light as they began to flutter open.

Wait, this wasn't his bedroom.
Still hazy from just waking up he tried to process his surroundings, it didn‘t seem familiar to him at first, but then he remembered the events of last night.

That‘s right… . He stayed over at his partner‘s, Miles Edgeworth, who was kind enough to invite him to dine out at a restaurant, after a successful trial... well on Phoenix' behalf.

Any sane person would've called this place extravagant or any other word for fancy, even though the prosecutor said it wasn‘t anything special, but the bill hanging to the floor and the 3 Michelin stars clearly said otherwise.

He knew Miles would never admit it, even though Phoenix’ pay cheque didn‘t look too bad, since he IS an attorney, Miles still loved to spoil him occasionally, which Pheonix appreciated, don't get him wrong.

It’s not like he has never been to a fancy restaurant before, in fact, Maya has dragged him to this one place across the city because they apparently had the best burgers in town. To say the least, „best“ was an overstatement and Phoenix‘ bank account wasn‘t too happy about it either.

With a groan, he mustered up all of his body’s strength to turn to the side, expecting the other half of the bed to be empty and cold with the prosecutor already up and about like he usually is at this time of day.

Yes, it might’ve been only 7 in the morning, no normal person would want to be awake by now, but Miles was anything but normal.

To his surprise, he was still sound asleep beside him, snuggled up in his blanket. Today was Sunday, which meant the both of them could sleep in and hog the bed all day long. But he knew it was only something he could dream of.

Knowing Edgeworth he‘d most definitely find an excuse to do some paperwork anyways. Talk about workaholic. As an attorney himself, he knew his job as a high prosecutor was important, but he tended to overwork himself quite often and didn‘t even notice it.

Although his behavior annoyed him sometimes, he could never stay mad at him for long. Looking back at him, the sight of his relaxed face made his heart melt on the spot. He never gets enough rest, even if he tried, which causes him to get irritated by the littlest things. Detective Gumshoe‘s salary knows the consequences far too well.

Still, moments like these remind him that he‘s not just the unbeatable, terrifying demon prosecutor everyone always says he is, but Miles Edgeworth, a person he has learned to love over the past couple of years, he worked and grew up with.

He thought he‘d never see him again after Miles suddenly transferred schools, leaving him and Larry behind. It was only when he caught a glimpse of a certain prodigy prosecutor. It was a coincidence, really. At that time he was in the waiting room at the dentist's when he saw the news. „Perfect record of 4 years since the young age of 20.“. He couldn‘t believe it. He finally had the chance to see him again, after all these years. So the only logical thing that came to his mind was to become an attorney himself, leading him to where he was now.

He carefully lifted his hand to brush the soft, silver locks out of Miles‘ face. He admired him longer than he intended to. Words just couldn‘t describe what he felt at this very moment. Miles was so beautiful to him. From his fair, soft skin to his short brows, which were always furrowed in concentration when he sat at his office desk, furiously writing reports like a madman.

Lost in thoughts, he didn‘t notice him waking up, grey eyes observing him. „I hope you’re aware that staring is quite rude.“ A deep voice snapped him out of his thoughts. God, how much he adored his voice, still hoarse from just waking up, but so sweet and rich like honey, he wished to drown in it. He could talk to him all day and he would never get tired of it, even if he was just reciting the law from memory.

„Good morning.. .“ The corners of Phoenix‘ mouth lifted into a sweet smile while tucking strands of hair behind his partner's ear. Miles stopped his movement by capturing his hand in his, leaving small butterfly kisses on his knuckles. „Morning… .“ He mumbled against his skin. He could feel the vibration of his voice run through his skin, giving him goosebumps. His hand was so warm as well. As cheesy as it sounds, it was like two puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together, completing each other.

Phoenix felt so content at the moment, with Miles at his side he felt like the luckiest man alive. He wished for them to stay like this forever. But like all good things, they had to end. Miles slowly let go of his hand, the freezing morning air hitting his skin again, making him shiver.

Miles let out a sharp exhale as he shuffled under the covers and slowly moved to the edge of their shared bed. „Where do you think you‘re going?“ Phoenix frowned. Miles turned around and leaned his broad body over him, giving his forehead a small peck. „I still have some unfinished paperwork from yesterday. You should go back to sleep, it‘s Sunday.“

He wasn‘t having it. Not today. He sat up, clinging himself to his back like his life depended on it. His fingers grasped the soft fabric of his pink pyjamas, trying to pull him back down into the warmth of the bed to no avail. „Exactly, it‘s Sunday. You deserve a break too sometimes, y‘know… .“ He mumbled against the crook of his neck.

First, it was silent. After a while, he looked up at the prosecutor‘s face and based on his expression he could practically see the gears turning in his head. After a couple of seconds and even more silence he let out a sigh of defeat. „Fine. Just this once.“

He placed his hand on his shoulders and gently pushed him back down. It took Phoenix a moment to process things since he never gives in that easily, but he decided not to complain, in case he changed his mind.

Yes, Phoenix might‘ve been a lawyer, and a good one at that, but when it came to arguing with him on a personal matter, Miles always won.

Not this time though.

Once again Miles made himself comfortable beside him and the spiky-haired man immediately sought the warmth of his body.  He felt his lover bury his face in his hair, hugging him close.

„Why can‘t we stay like this forever?“ He whispered. It was a rhetorical question, but Miles felt the need to answer it anyways. „That would be quite impractical and illogical at that. You see, you‘ll get bed sore and very sick after an approximate time of a few days.“ Phoenix freed himself from his grip and turned to face him. „Not to mention, you‘d have absolutely no intake of nutrition; considering that you-„

Phoenix gave the prosecutor a quick peck on the lips, successfully catching him off guard. „Wh- Don‘t do that, I was explaining something to you!“ He blushed. „You just had to ruin it.“ Phoenix snorted. „R-Ruin what exactly?" A fit of giggles turned into uncontrollable laughter.

Miles Edgeworth was a feared man by many. With his intimidating record and his absolute control of every situation he was in. But as intelligent as he was, sometimes he could be a bit.. well... dense.

But it didn't matter. Not to Pheonix at least. They spent the rest of the morning in bed in each other's embraces, talking about their friends and upcoming cases.

Phoenix was so full of love. Oh, he loved him so dearly and with no doubt, he knew that Miles loved him too.
